Well who would have guess that Danzo would order Sasuke's death. Naruto finally understands Sasuke's pain and Inari and his gramps show up to help rebuild Konoha.

Yeah, like he never ordered it before. He obviously had something to do with the nine tails wanting to rid himself of the uchihas so bad.

So was Pain's sole purpose in the plot really to allow Naruto to relate to Sasuke?

That's just one part of it. In Kishimoto's view, having the character deal with a personal tragedy can lead to growth, which seems to be true for his style of storytelling. Coming to better understand Sasuke seems to just be one of the perks that happened to come along as well.

Well, Konoha will still be in a big hole. Hope it doesn't start to rain.
