View Full Version : Best UC Gundam shows to watch?

Note: I chose UC because I like starting with the originals.
When I'm done watching Macross, I was thinking about watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie triliogy, since a lot of people say the movies are better than the actual show. After that, what other UC Gundams should I watch within the same continuity? I hear Zeta is good, as is Char's Counterattack. Anyway, are those two shows licensed? I hope so because I'm no good with torrents and such.

Mobile Suit Gundam movie triliogy > Zeta Gundam > ZZ Gundam > Chars Counter Attack. Then some Turn A when you are done. Victory Gundam is up to you.
Some people will tell you to skip ZZ, but some people would argue against it.

ZZ ruins the coolest villain in all of gundam. It also has

Go for Zeta.
It's been licensed for a while by Bandai. Retail is about $35 for each 2 disc, 10 episode set (five in all). You can find it for less; I got vol. 5 for $15 at Best Buy.
Go for the subtitles, don't listen to the dub. I'm not someone who particularly hates dubs, but this one isn't very good.
Char's Counterattack is a movie, not a show. It's been licensed, great movie, but I suggest you watch Zeta first.

I don't care when you watch it, but if you watch UC, watch Victory Gundam.
Seriously awesome stuff. It's pure Tomino -- nonsensically epic and insane with a death toll so massive it makes those guys from the male enhancement commercials look like they're compensating. Which they are, but I mean a lot more. :P

Two collections are out for series. It's a lot more convent to go for those instead.

Alright, then should I go for the Zeta TV series or the movie trilogy?

^ I'd really recommend that you watch Zeta's TV series. For obivious reasons Zeta Gundam had very little filler and the entire 50 episode TV series was cut into 3 90 minute movies. So a lot of important things get cut from the movie trilogy.
BTW the licenenced UC series of the same contiunity that you're looking for are these
Mobile Suit Gundam(dub only)
Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy VHS Dub and Sub
Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy DVD (Sub Only-Special Edition)<----Avoid this one
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack
The only one that's missing is Double Zeta which is still important IMO.

If you are talking about the Zeta Movies, just skip them. TV series is way more important.
If you are talking about MSG movies, then go for that first.

Well I would say Gundam 0080 and the 8th team are the best out of the UC lot though theres no reason not start with the original Gundam 0079 which is still great even after all this time which surprised me. I personally didn't like Zeta all that much compared to the other shows and double zeta is around the same for me.

0080 and 8th MS are really good series that I recommend.
In terms of the original series I recommend the movie versions over the TV series. The movies cut out a lot of the crap (Mobile Armour of the Week) and are rather good.
The Moon Moon people
Noes!

I honestly still prefer the 0079 TV series for the most part. You get to know the characters way more than if you just watched the movies IMO. But I do love Mobile Suit Gundam III's final battle over the TV series version.

MSG movie triology, then Zeta, then CCA, then Victory.

But I thought you told me to avoid the 0079 movies. I don't have any VHS players, so here's my lineup so far:
Zeta TV
Char's Counterattack
Now Prons says I should get the original MSG movie trilogy, and Nigokio says not to get that. So what's better, sub-only movies or dub-only TV series? I just hope the dub doesn't butcher it or something... I love the looks of the Sazabi, and I heard CCA is the final part of the UC timeline.

Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy VHS Dub and Sub
Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy DVD (Sub Only-Special Edition)<----Avoid this one
I'd really like to know why you want to avoid the subbed movie trilogy when you wouldn't advise someone to avoid the VHS dub, what with it's Super British Bright and Gundamn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zXQYsYwmxo&feature=related) ;)
0080 and 8th MS are really good series that I recommend.
I also recommend 0080. It's the best six episode OVA you'll ever see about two kids playing soldier. ;)
The movies cut out a lot of the crap (Mobile Armour of the Week) and are rather good.

...was Zakrello in the movies?

The TV series Dub is reasonable, but takes a few liberties with the script... nothing too bad. I quite liked the TV dubs Char... I didn't like Amuro though. And no matter how good Michael Kopsa is he's no Shuichi Ikeda. (There's a good pair of scenes on Youtube that can be used for comparison but they're from CCA and so will spoil things) And since they had a whole new dub cast for Zeta Gundam you might not want to get attached to the first dub cast.
I love the looks of the Sazabi, and I heard CCA is the final part of the UC timeline.
Not exactly. CCA was the final part of Amuro and Char's story. G-Saviour is technically the latest instalment of the UC timeline... but it doesn't exist so there's no use worrying about it. :P Victory Gundam is the last anime in the timeline.
0079 - Zeta - ZZ - CCA
Are a direct series of direct sequels. Everything else in the UC timeline is a side story. You can skip ZZ Gundam if you want... you don't really need it to watch CCA.
Personally I recommend 0079 movies, Zeta tv series, Char's Counterattack first.

Frankly I thought the Zeta dub was pretty bad, so I'd recommend sticking to the subs for that anyway.
