Umm... so I saw the first episode of this and i'm just like wtf. I feel like I'm watching the final episodes of a show. Is this show like Cashern Sins where you don't need to have followed the older series to watch it, or is this like a direct continuation of however the 70s show ended (which seems like it stopped dead in the middle of a cliffhanger)?

Everything that's happening feels like the ultimate outcome of a plot line that's been developing for a long time. Even if I went back to the old shows, I feel like i've spoiled some major major major events for myself.

Is this just how the show starts off, or did I really jump into a series dead in the middle of it?

The second episode is the real first episode. I have no clue why they made the first episode so confusing. It's like Victory Gundam.

The series is pretty much a remake so far. Having watched a couple of dozen episodes of Mazinger Z with really terrible subtitles, I can tell you that the events so far, while different are basically a retelling of the start of the Mazinger Z saga. The first episode is just a narrative device, it's a bit odd. Kinda like built-in spoilers, but then I suppose they are going on the basis that what happens in a super robot anime is rarely a surprise, and that everyone kinda already knows the basic story.

I've been enjoying it so far. The first episode stuck me as more of a "Look! Awesome is going to happen later!" kind of thing.
