The best thing for you to do is since you're friend might have actually bought it legally (we'll never know) is to purchase an external (or if you don't mind poking around your computer a bit, an internal one) and set that drive to R2. NOTE: There are only so many times you can change the region code on your drive. I suggest you get one per region you want.

Region free DVD players are also cheap and easily found (if you know where to look).

They're legal?
Yes, they are at least in the US.

ripping the disc to an iso file and playing it using a virtual dvd rom program might work, but you would probably need to change your dvd-rom region setting to do that, which in and of itself can be problematic

I'm pretty sure we're not allowed to post links to vendors that sell region-free DVD players because they're considered AnimeNation competitors, is that right?

Yup, otherwise I would have already done so. OTOH, Mania.com's Anime/Manga Retail and DVD & Home Theater Hardware forums would be a good place to ask.

Why not? Bootleggers do it all the time for Hollywood films.

I had this problem as well as 1/3 or so of my hentai dvds would not play on my computer, my computer didnt even recognized the CD as a dvd movie. I didnt buy a multi region dvd or comp but download this free thing called "reimage repair" which is supposed to unlock the region thing temporarily, all I know is when you activate it my computer all of a sudden can read and play my dvds that otherwise were not recognized. Also all the "reimage repair" is if you can get it spyware free is a scan of computer stability and offer you some sort of service to fix instability if you want to buy it. anyway thats how i solved region problem though i cant say if it only works a finite number of times.

"free image repair" sounds kind of odd...
I'm kind of disappointed the PS3 doesn't seem to be region free with DVD/Blu-Ray movies and such, but it is with PS3 games. Kind of annoying if you ask me.
