While not just OST music, the I've Sound Collection is well worth the money to but it (about ¥21,000) . . .

In that case I will suggest either FFVIII or FFX's soundtrack, since they were both lush and beautiful.

I'm quite fond of the 3rd FLCL OST, with music performed by the pillows. I've had the CD in my car for over a month now.

The Big O soundtrack is quite good, I think. Once you get past the theme song, the score is huge. There's even a final vocal piece for the series ED.

Haibane Renmei is a soundtrack I've listened to any number of times as well. It's very good background music to play while I'm writing or doing stuff around the house.

Both FLCL and any of the Cowboy Bebop scores speak for themselves, I think.

A bit cliched maybe, but my favorites are probably the soundtracks to Akira and Serial Experiments Lain

Some of the best anime music I've ever heard can be found on the .hack//SIGN soundtracks, or anything else by Kajiura Yuki. Right now if I had to pick some of the best, I'd go with her work.

I'd add FFXII to the list of lush orchestrals, but I personally don't like it because so much of it sounds the same- not like the stuff Uematsu composed. Sakimoto's score sounds like he's trying to channel James Horner and John Williams simultaneously, and rarely uses less than the full orchestra at all times...

I wouldn't quite call Akira a cliche recommendation, since it's more than a little unusual and takes time to grow on you. I actually didn't watch the movie for quite a few years after my first watching because I couldn't stand the BGM. (Well, that AND the character design)

Though I have to say that it wouldn't be a bad thing to have the signature refrain from "Tetsuo" (DAAAAAAN. DAAAAAAAN. DAAAN-DAAAN!) come out of thin air when you walk into a room.

Yeah, it took a while to grow on me too, but now I love it dearly. The atmosphere it conjures up is spot on *_*

I really like the Hellsing OST and the Bleach OST. I really like rock so that's why I like the Bleach one, and the Hellsing one is kind of jazzy.

You sound like you need a Joe Hisaishi fix... :D

Google his work, and listen to some of it, especially ADS, or Asian Dream Song. You like orchestral and symphony? My two favorite types! Definetely check out Joe's work. Either that, or the 5 Centimeters Per Second OST... Actually, Joe's music is what got me hooked into the music of Anime. Now I have several OSTs which I listen to frequently...

Might I add the Tsubasa Chronicles OST collection is worth it as well...

N.H.K ni Youkoso! Sound Collection - Sunny Side ni Youkoso! & N.H.K ni Youkoso! O.S.T. - Dark Side ni Youkoso!

Both excellent.

Also, if you can, try to get the OST for Death Note...all three of them.
