View Full Version : Thoughts on Brotherhood after 8 Episodes.

So, when I origionally heard that this was going to be a remake instead of a sequal to the origional series, I had already planned to watch regardless, when I was meaning to re-watch the first FMA series anyway. However, even when the first couple of episodes aired I was still uncertain as to how much this would deviate from the first series.
I can safely say, as someone who never read the manga but already saw the first series, that I am througly enjoying Brotherhood. Watching this new series, makes me realise just how much crap was inserted into the origional. Alot of useless emotional 'angsty' drama which really bogged down the story IMO has been removed, and I think the pace is much better and more evened out in Brotherhood. It's what the origional should have been, and I can see why they opted to go with a remake.
The characters are all around more interesting, and the story is darker and more intense than the origional, which I always thought was trying to tell a serious story but at the same time be kid-friendly which made for a sometimes really un-balanced plot.
In short, I would reccomend it to anyone who has only read the manga, or only seen the first series. Or neither. If you've watched the first FMA, and read the manga, then this might not be as interesting for you.

it's progressing fast, and i like it. i hope the keep the pace when it moves onto the manga storyline. because what, it took the first anime about 20 episodes to reach the point of 8 in brotherhood, eh.

It's better than the first go at the series but not better than the manga. It's a shame they had to cut some things.

It's definitely going at a faster pace then the original.
I see next week's episode is
the one where Hughes dies. Jesus that made me cry more than 'Nina is a chimera'

I think it's a solid follow up. It's moving way faster than the old series, but it's also chopping out alot of stuff. The scene at Lab 5 would have been alot more dramatic and better imo had Barry the Chopper been a case that Ed and Al solved rather than just some random guy attached to armor.
I don't think this one is darker though. I have to really disagree with the OP on that one. Take the whole Lab 5 thing for example. The old series made that part way more dark. One of the guys bonded to armor was going to kill himself and Ed had to stop him. Ed actually goes into the lab and sees all of the experiments going on and is tempted himself to sacrifice the prisoners to get a philosopher's stone. Al is outside fighting the soul of someone who came close to killing his brother. To me that was way darker than them going there, getting into a fight with random people and then passing out while envy and lust blow up the place.
Plus, the manga has yet to have anything anywhere near as dark and Ed and Al fighting against and killing their own mother. You can say alot about the first series, but I think you could ever label it as light hearted or kid friendly.

What! So it's just a remake.... the hell was wrong with the first adaptation? :(

Well, you fail for being oblivious to blatant differences.

The whole latter part of the story was created new for the anime instead of following the manga. Maybe the manga was still in progress at the time, I just don't know.

The manga is still ongoing, so you got it right.

Can't say I like it as much as the first. It seems more fast pace then the original (original had a bit of filler so understandable)...but it feels rushed. The emotional parts in the first just dont happen like they do in brotherhood. Feels like the characters are just there and you can't sympathize with them or whatever you know. They even cut out some parts I thought were important (like ed about to actually transmute people). Or when Maes died...didn't seem as sad like the original.

Part of that is because they're trying to get through the stuff that was already done in the first series as quickly as possible. I bet they will slow down once they reach newer content.
And I'm actually starting to prefer the manga. I'm through vol 12. or so, and there's some crazy, crazy sh-t going down in the manga...

I'm going through the manga again and the characters from Xing they introduced in episode 15 dont appear for a while yet in the manga (volume 8), the material from episode 14 comes from volume 5, also the guy with the cane and top hat doesn't appear in the manga until much later, albeit it's not that important when he appears.
I dont think there's much consequence to this, material can be introduced early and not affect the storyline, it just caught me off guard to find the character introductions happening right now.

They've reached the new stuff now (as of episode 15) and still the pace hasn't slowed down that much.

So FMA Brotherhood is a re-make and not a continuation of the 1st Series?
That's kind of a bummer.

It's a remake of better source material.
Besides the first series ended pretty conclusively with the movie. Don't really see the need for a continuation.

I just stared watching Brotherhood this weekend. I am on Episode 11 and I actually forgot just how great this series is. I am still a little upset that it is a "retelling" of the story.

Only the first 15 episodes are a retelling, after that it's on to the manga material the first anime wasn't able to animate; the real FMA story.

I didn't see the need for a movie! :P
Honestly thought the original anime was superior until the movie.
Oh well, show has diverged and is pretty enjoyable now. Hard not to have a good time so very recommended.

It made me the saddest out of everything that happened!
The second, for some reason was when Roy compared all his subordinates to chess peices.
