Did anyone else find Urotsukidoji do be pretty underwhelming when you first watched it? Everyone seems to describe it as the most extreme hentai ever but I found it to be a very tame "80's hentai", its practically sesame street next to Dark Love and Bible Black.
On a related note does anyone find that Hentai has warped your idea of normalcy to the point where you get annoyed at how WTF?! the reaction most regular people have to hentai? And of course you can't defend hentai without coming across as a weirdo pervert so you gotta go "yeah, those Japanese are screwed up, tentacles etc. gotta be a real sicko to like that stuff."

When it was first released, it made an impact but it's been around for quite some time. The problem may lie in that a lot of the viewership may be a little bit desensitized in regards to the content. But make no mistake, it is still one of the more hard core hentai series available. Angel of Darkness was a trip as well.
But each of us has our own threshold and what may shock and awe you may not have the same effect on my psyche.
I've rarely seen people defend hentai but I know that it is very popular, maybe even more so among the non-anime fans. They represent a group of people who think that's exactly what anime is and it would be futile to explain that like domestic media, anime consists of different genres that appeal to certain demographics.
I would never degrade the Japanese and label them as "sickos" as I know that there are a lot of Americans who have their own warped and twisted fantasies and ideas regarding the subject. The guilty pleasures that people have will remain their own.

I somewhat agree with KabukiSaMuRaI's statement here. I do agree that most of the viewership is probably desensitized. However, I don't think it's "still one of the more hard core hentai series available". I'll admit it, I bought The Legend of The Overfiend, because most people say that it so graphic, but I disagree. I thought it was quite tame. (Unless those people, and KabukiSaMuRaI's statement, about it being "one of the more hard core" titles, is referring to The Perfect Collection (which is uncensored, compared to the normal DVD release)) However, I still loved the film and would recommend to anyone wanting to get into Hentai.
(Note: I have only seen the first movie, The Legend of The Overfiend)

AFAIK the movie cut is edited for time, not content.

I rented the title because it was mixed in with the standard Sci-Fi VHS titles down at my local video store.
I watched it like one would watch a train wreck, I guess. I had that gawker's metality to how much worse it could actually get. To my dismay, it continued to get worse.
I can say that I wasn't particularly shocked by the content, so much as I was shocked at the revelation that enough people found the content entertaining enough for the title to make it all the way through production and distribution.
It was a bad title, very badly acted, and outside of a semi-interesting premise, I felt it had pretty much no artistic value whatsoever. Beyond the historical footnote and the social commentary on a very narrow subset of the anime fanbase, I'd say it was a pretty dull title to watch.

Its a classic.
One of my all time favourites, i love it. Its a shame it went a little down hill and never had a real ending and the prequal wasnt so good.
I first saw it when i was 14 and i loved it, it was one of the first animes i ever saw(as far as knowing what i was watching ws "anime" and Japanese).
I think it is one of the best titles and series ever. Good animation, good voice acting, good story, action(not just sex), it was just cool, awesome story line.
Ledgendary, a trend setter. You cant say anything bad about it, it started the whole tentacle trend. Classic.
Oh, and yeah i've experianced various reaction about teh hentai thing, mostly its funny and humerous but you do get the weirdo and pervert an sicko reputation but mostly in humour and a funny way rather than shock or offence but i aint gettin any younger.
I have a joke about it with co workers and a bit of a rep an my mates give me s__t about it but poretty much in good fun.
Some people think its sick or lame but other like it without overly likeing it or admiting it.
Its amazing and funny homw many people laugh at it or say bad things about yet ask me to burn and lend them some LOL.

Actualy I have the Perfect collection and the 2nd movie is missing scenes!
The scene where a young munihausen get slapped by the principal at school and the scene where munihausen call upon kohoki and kohoki rapes his female teacher is not in the perfect collectionb But it is in my VHS version.

Lots of group sex and tentacles, for one. (All consensual, due to the protagonist's "super touch".) See the Anime on DVD/Mania.com (http://www.mania.com/dark-love_article_77848.html) and Hentai Neko reviews.

That's kind of an odd comparison, saying that Urotsukidoji isn't exterme in comparison to two shows it predates by 10-15 years. For it's time it was a pretty extreme show, and even stands up well to some of the out there shows of today. And as far as tentacles goes, I am not a big fan, but westerners have just as many odd fetish videos as Japan does. Is tentacles really any more crazy then say... lunch meat tossing, balloon popping, farting, or snuff videos? Tentacles need lovin to

Google says: "Apparently so." (Search terms: ["balloon popping" fetish].)

I'm a little confused—which release is missing scenes? The Legend of the Demon Womb movie, the Urotsukidoji Perfect Collection, or both?

I remember the perfect collection having heaps of extra scenes that i hadnt seen, i dont recal it missing anything and ive seen differant versions of ledgend of the overfeind and demon womb many times, but having said that i do drink so prehaps i forget?
Ive seen differant versions of return of the overfeind also and seen a version that had extra scenes but i think that was just editing that had been done on teh AUS release.
Oh yeah, when i was 14 i had a cruch on Mugumi(or is it Nugumi, i forget?) LOL.

Ooh—that might be it. Australia, like Britain, has a film censorship board (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_of_Film_and_Literature_Classifica tion_(Australia)). According the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urotsukidoji#DVD_Releases_2) and the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108462/) ("Certification: Australia:R (cut) | Australia:Refused Classification"), the Australian release of Legend of the Demon Womb was edited. The American release was 88 minutes long (http://animemania01.tripod.com/animeu_z.htm) (see "Urotsukidoji 2 [Shin Choujin Densetsu Urotsuki Doji = New Legend of the Overfiend: Wandering Child]")—what is the running time of the Aussie version?

"Megumi" (a common Japanese female personal name; e.g. here (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=391)).

The edits is in Legend of the Demon Womb.
The scenes are included in my Pal VHS tape, but the reg 1 Legend of the Demon Womb from the Complete Collection has the scnenes edited out.

I loved Urotsukidoji. @Somewhatkrazy - I first saw it when I was roughly the same age, 15 or so ... and at that age, I don't think there was anything hornier. My favourite part was when Nikki gets given the demonic penis, he goes from being the little bullied kid to the big man. Love it when he's banging those girls in front of the cameras, really taking his aggression out on them! haha. I liked Megumi too!

That explains it—those are extra, added scenes, not ones that were edited out of the original. And kakugo is the person I thought about asking about this apparent contradiction, since he knows far more tha I about Urosukidoji (as should be clear to anyone who reads the linked-to post).
