The Pirate Bay Trial: The Official Verdict - Guilty (http://torrentfreak.com/the-pirate-bay-trial-the-verdict-090417/)
Just minutes ago the verdict in the case of The Pirate Bay Four was announced. All four defendants were accused of ‘assisting in making copyright content available’. Peter Sunde: Guilty. Fredrik Neij: Guilty. Gottfrid Svartholm: Guilty. Carl Lundström: Guilty. The four receive 1 year in jail each and fines totaling $3,620,000.

The court said that the four defendants worked as a team, were aware that copyrighted material was being shared using The Pirate Bay and that they made it easy and assisted the infringements. It categorized the infringements as ’severe’. The judge said that the users of The Pirate Bay committed the first offense by sharing files and the four assisted this.

While the court did not agree with the plaintiff’s exaggerated estimates of losses, it still set the damages at 30 million SEK ($3,620,000). This a hugely significant amount and the court has ordered that the four should pay this amount between them.

The judge also stated that the usage of BitTorrent at The Pirate Bay is illegal. Rest assured, other torrent sites hosted in Sweden will be keeping a close eye on developments.

My thoughts; A big waste of time, Personally. I doubt other torrent search engine sites around the world are gonna look at this and decide to stop for the fear of the law busting down their door.

And I'm not saying it shouldn't have been done, just on matters like this, I usually think there are bigger fish to fry.

Even if they do... others will appear. There was Suprnova once, the biggest site at the time. Got taken down, was replaced by several other -nova sites, the most successful of which is Mininova. Demonoid went down, came back. Torrentspy went down to be replaced by others...

Onward goes the unstopable march of piracy.

Well no kidding, of course its a hopeless effort on the judicial system's part. People keep trying to put gun manufacturers in jail due to gun violence, and why do they keep failing? People like guns. People also like to get things for free. You can't hope change the way millions of people think. For every one person at the RIAA trying to put these people in jail, there are 30 other people to that 1 man willing to spend thier entire week to crack a videogame, and release it to the public.

They can't hope to win against people who already do this for free. The people who host torrent sites or provide cracks for videogames are already doing this work for free with only the thanks of the general population in return, you can't hope to levrege someone like that.

Sounds liek an invented law just for these kinda cases >.>

But yeah this won't stop anything, Piratebay was just a well known name ergo an easy target.

Piracy has been around for as long as i've been alive, when people used to photocopy Amiga games manuals for the code wheels and passing around floppy disks, and i get the feeling it'll still be here when i die.

I kind of feel bad for the four guys that have to now go to jail for a year, I'm sure the 3 mil isn't a big deal, but the jail for a year sucks.

I know they knew what they were doing is illegal, but really, no matter what the law says, it is completely and totally unstoppable there is literally nothing that can be done to stop it.

its like saying Hurricanes are illegal...whats the point, its going to happen either way so why punish people for it, they might as well tax them or something instead.

I'm actually a little surprised, because I thought the trial was going well, because on day two half the charges were dropped, at record speed in Swedish law I may ad.

Another thing I notice is they keep mentiong "witnesses", how the hell do you witness software piracy?

"I was... I-I just came over hoping to watch the Dark Knight on Blu-Ray, but when I got there I found out he had no bluray player, and I was all, "How are we going to watch this?" and he said "OH I HAVE MY WAYS" and the next thing I know I'm watching in horror as he opens "piratebay.exe" and I see the words "MOVIES DOWNLOADING!!!" in big red letters with a pirate flag floating across the screen. All I could do was close my eyes."

I believe under Sweedish law they're spared Jailtime until /after/ their appeals, which will ofc fail \o/

I know that piracy is wrong and all. But I hope that Bit torrent doesn't become illegal someday, because it can be used for legal purposes like putting in Linux distros, or video game speed run videos, or anything that is legal.

And about Pirate Bay, I knew they weren't going to get away and someday get in big trouble, even about 5 years ago when I heard about them.

Guess they aren't laughing much now that they are in jail

Dunno. As much as they say it's "serious" they also say what's being done to them is silly, and they aren't willing to pay for the fines too.

One thing's for sure: those corporate ninjas have only done their job well for now.

I'm split on how I feel about this. I mean, it's like fans are asking entertainment companies to make all their goods for free. It's all they're going to accept in a few years which means the entire entertainment industry will be reduced to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg

If fans are unwilling to buy a product than that's the natural evolution of entertainment, produced for free and distributed for free. Yet the Genie cannot be put back into it's bottle and it may be the only end result that can now be achieved and any attempt to fight against piracy will be doomed so fighting against it is stupid.

Sorry I realize that's a big run-on sentence but I think my point got across.

Swedish ones are also fairly nice, the convicted can get education inside the prison which increase the chance that they can get honest jobs when they get out. They get cable (I think), videogames etc.

The bad boys dont get all the stuff though.

SO US prisoins are like that also. If fact the ones were prisoners are allowed to have more personal items in their cells tend to have less violence. THought toi be because you have something to take away from them instead of nothing.

and of course the bad apples get a small isolated cell that they can rage out in.

America needs Prison reform badly. This is why Norway is looking better and better to me.

Even though I am an Atheist and don't believe in fiction, I think that Norway is truly God's country. Not like most redneck American's think of their place.

Why can't we as Americans improve our country and stop it with our ego trip. I mean Norway is more civil, Japan has better technology, other countries better economy, better school educational system, etc. Can't America stop thinking its better even though its not. If we truly want to be better, then we better start improving our country now, or we are going to be left out in the stone age like the 3rd world countries.

I think it is Americas diversity that is killing it. And no I don't mean we should all be white. I mean we need to unify our nation instead of diversifying it. Though there is no turning around what America has become, especially in regards to crime, poverty, and prison system, without a massive... reset to put it nicely

I don't know why, but when I remove the context from that sentence, I find it funny as hell. It's so nonsequitur, like that quote from the Lewis Black routine that starts out, "If it wasn't for my horse..."

As for the thread topic: Eh, people who broke the law went to jail. The system worked. Yay.

I don't know but from the way people talk, I'd assume the the elementary and secondary parts of the Norwegian education system would be better than America's though nobody in the world could match the top universities of U.S.

1: Pirating is never going to go away, if music industries weren't so greedy, they would realize this and adapt to it now, instead of falling behind the first company that does adapt.

2: The people from pirate bay that are being thrown away, are getting a break in that the judge was a supporter of copyright laws.... that seems a little biased.

While I have no doubts that the folks involved will appeal their sentence, I can't imagine they'd have much legal ground to have the verdict overturned. I expect the appeal will be summarily denied without comment.

http://www.ulinks.com/topuniversities.htm'Education system' in most persons' minds probably means K-12 education, not post-secondary schools. University is a choice, elementary/secondary education is mandatory.

So, when determining who has the 'better education system,' peeps will probably place more emphasis on the fact that young Swedes outperform us on Reading, Math and Science Achievement and/or Aptitude tests rather than focusing on that big, purty Ivy League University. Shoot, the majority of American teens don't possess the skills/scores to even be considered for acceptance there.

Hmm, that prison puts me in the mind of a college dorm, only MUCH better than most!

On-Topic, kinda pointless, but at the same, don't blame the Film/Music Industry, 'cause you're a swindler and a niggard. When I download stuff that aught not've been downloadable , I don't start pointing fingers.

EDIT: I stopped reading after Ken-Ohki's post, so I didn't know Trefellin pretty much posted the same thing. Although, I'm confused now, are y'all talking about Sweden or Norway? Doesn't really matter, though, they're both ahead of us. I think Norway is a bit behind Sweden, though.

If we started having better population control responses for a lot of our crimes then it might prevent people from committing them.

You know, I think that's the first time I've heard someone defend Eugenics since... oh, I think the 40's. Seems a bunch of central Europeans were big on that, or somesuch.

It's generally frowned upon by civilized folks, nowadays. Just a little, y'know, FYI, there.

OT: the history of modern eugenics in the early to mid 20th century actually makes interesting reading, most western countries had their own programs running, public opinion kinda went against it after the revelations of Nazi extremism on the subject post the war.
