Now they try to reach out to the youth using comics (and if you ask me, it pretty much look like manga style to me)

The points and arguments they bring up in the comics is interesting and makes sense, if everything in the Bible is TRUE!

I dont deny that it might exist a god (one form or another, dont need to be the big white guy with big white beard) but Im not sure when it comes to the different religion and bibles there is out there. If one religion is the true one, how come there is others with different views on topics, such as way of living?

Some things is just confusing for me.

Well, Timmy, the reason that some people believe things other than the One True Religion is simple: Those people are Wrong.

Of course, if you ask them, they don't think they're wrong at all. Does that mean they're right? Heck, no! It just means they're both wrong and dumb. If they were smart, they'd know just how wrong they were, but then if they were smart enough to realize that, then they'd believe the One True Religion, wouldn't they?

Of course they would.

So it all comes down to there being two types of people in the world: Smart, Right People and Wrong, Dumb People.

I hope that cleared up any confusion you may have had.

I only needed to read one page to see that it's the usual bigotry and hate-filled prejudice masquerading as religion that appeals to the worst elements of the Christian fundamentalist movement.

I have nothing against your typical Christian, but the fundamentalists are pretty much just filled with seething, bubbling hatred for everyone who doesn't believe what they believe. That's not the message of the book, from what I've read. If a person believes what the people who wrote these comics believe, I don't see how they can call themself Christian.

It's almost funny how severely twisted the message has become over the course of two thousand years. It's gone from being about the important things, like God, love, peace and brotherhood to being about completely unrelated socio-political issues.

Ooh, a religion thread eh?

If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.

The LORD then gave these further instructions to Moses: 'Tell the people of Israel to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you forever. It helps you to remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Yes, keep the Sabbath day, for it is holy. Anyone who desecrates it must die; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community. Work six days only, but the seventh day must be a day of total rest. I repeat: Because the LORD considers it a holy day, anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death.'

Christianity FTW

The old testament is the best one though!

"I have wiped out many nations, devastating their fortress walls and towers. Their cities are now deserted; their streets are in silent ruin. There are no survivors to even tell what happened. I thought, 'Surely they will have reverence for me now! Surely they will listen to my warnings, so I won't need to strike again.' But no; however much I punish them, they continue their evil practices from dawn till dusk and dusk till dawn." So now the LORD says: "Be patient; the time is coming soon when I will stand up and accuse these evil nations. For it is my decision to gather together the kingdoms of the earth and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them. All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy. "On that day I will purify the lips of all people, so that everyone will be able to worship the LORD together. My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings.

God is a badass.

superplough, just so you know, Christians don't really F's with Old Testament.
Given that the whole "Young Earth" movement (upon which the Evolution comic was based) is based on Old Testament dating, the Christians who made that comic clearly draw some inspiration from the Old Testament.

In my experience, a lot of the fundamentalist Christian groups tend to hold the Old Testament as an infallible reference when it suits their current point, but tend to be just as quick to distance themselves from the parts that don't.

A lot of the same fundamentalist Christians, I've noticed, are just as quick to hold up examples of scientists who supports their argument, while simultaneously ignoring the remainder of the scientific community, the scientific method and mankind's ability to use reason.

Naturally, there are just as many people on the other side of the argument doing the same sorts of things. Ignorant people can misquote scientific papers and findings just as easily as the Old Testament.

In short, if people are hell-bent on believing something, then all the evidence and arguments to the contrary aren't going to change their minds.

One question for me is, how can 3 different religions all conjure around a supreme being, and they all have holidays around the same time of the year.
"Our version of God is right, and you're wrong."

I thought I already answered that part.

As for why they have holidays at the same time of year... well... have you bothered to look up the historical origins of the holidays in question? I could (and have) written whole papers on the origins of single holidays, so the answers you're seeking are rather complicated, for each holiday. There's no single boilerplate answer.

It's not that I'm waiting for god to exist in front of me, it's just I have no reason to follow it. My life is good enough for me to do my thing without having to think about a god to please or disturb.

On Sunday it's against the law to buy alcohol in my state becuase of blue laws, I don't even understand why we have this law except it's a religious thing.

At first, I was pretty amused by the comics. But then, I was reminded people actually take this seriously.

I don't care whether there is a god or not, though that doesn't seem to matter to believers. Sure, I'll pick up The Watchtower for a good chuckle, but I'm not about to be sermoned as to how to lead my life.

You know, I wouldn't mind having Eldritch Horrors as our Gods. At least then, we'd know who they are, and we could do away with the silly fundie comics. Though I would expect to see a rise in satire at the same time ("hey man, god's own image. I always did say you kinda looked like an octopus-head", etc.).

The Million Dollar Prons

The reason these comics don't work is because they take a staunch good\bad view on pornography, which isn't even present in the bible itself, it's really just some agenda pushing. It also says that everyone who looks at pornography is a sleazy rapist who doesn't know how to act around women.

Now what would have been more effective is if it took a "Great power great responsibility" style story. Don't look at too much or else you're going to be paying a group of thai women 5 dollars to step on your cubes. I'm guilty.

The one about school violence is really bizarre too. Because it opens with a highly abberated individual shooting several students to death and no one cries weeps or anything, but rather it turns into a "SMUGGLING BIBLES INTO THE SCHOOOL" story.

It's also incredibly hypocritcal that the main character in that strip goes on and on about bibles not bullets, yet his message of hope apparently didn't reach the kid who killed three people with a damn hunting rifle.

Did I mention Scientology is the only religion that's not against looking at pornography? Yeahhhhhhh

Oh well it's better than "Amazon's Attack."

How about 10 pages of double spaced research and the time management to appropriate peace what you've taken notes on into a thesis and concluding with a phrase from Chinese scriptures?

I don't know why not, but that's the reason you don't have an asian philosophy degree. Now if only you'd have realized the Power of Prons (PoP) earlier.

I'm getting an associates in Digital Arts, not Philosophy, I took that as an elective becuase it sounded intriguing to me, but it turned out to be more work than I expected.

And yes I admit I'm wrong, but simply saying that wont get me out of this little conversation.

Well, considering you did create it as well as perpetuate it... The ball, as they say, is in your court.

Or you could just STOP POSTING (I don't have the boxing gif for that.)

Also chick tracts are better than this thread's subject.

I'll be rocking with Cliff Burton and Freddie Mercury. and every other rock star that dies before me :smokin:

With your karma you might be able to buy a secondhand poster of an impersonator (that curiously looks as close to the real deal as beef jerky looks to filet mignon).

Hey leave Elvis out of this

...You realize that impersonators can impersonate others besides just Elvis, right? And by some really strange, but not surprisingly, coincidence, Elvis was as far from the subject matter as you could ever hope to shoot for, right?

Of cource, but usually when people talk about musician impersonators, Elvis seems to be the first name that comes to mind.

though an impersonation of Cliff Burton would be more badass than Elvis any day.
