I'm still only in the second disc of the first series. Do I need to finish the first before moving on to Brotherhood, or is it more or less a complete remake from the beginning?

Um.... couldn't you just read any of the threads already about this new series to find out?

I did. None of them really answered my question.

Well there's the "Voices Announced for FMA Remake" thread for starters.
And i'm not sure how this thread on the first episode which just came out last week dosen't already answer your question.

Yes, but is it a back-to-the-very-first-episode remake, or does it more or less pick up where the manga and the anime diverge?
And the thread about the first episode seemed to be just more about, well, what people thought about the first episode.

Well thats what im telling you, if you read the thread you'd have found out that the first episode starts the series completely over lol.

@Arnold:
I understand that this new series is basically a remake that skews closer to the manga. So, no, you're not really missing anything.

Rather than be a jerk and a jackass, i'll just answer his question: no.
From the first two episodes, the new series is starting all the way over again. I'm kinda upset cuz I feel like i'm basically going to be watching like 20+ episodes of reruns until I see something that wasn't in the first series.

FMA remake...sucks.
Do not watch it.
It looks worse than the first one(which was decent).

i'm enjoying it. why the hate? you can have an opinion but telling people not to watch it won't work. i like a lot of anime other people hate. viewers should form their own opinions without being told not to watch something given a few people's opinions

Just look at how they re-draw the characters...

^ That's opinion.
Personally I think the remake will spark more of an interest than the original, just because so many people hated that it didn't stick to the manga on the first go-round.
Anyhoo, Arnold if you wanna get through the series RIGHT NOW, watch the first series.. If you don't mind waiting for the next year for all the episodes to release, hang in there and just watch Brotherhood. xD;

Oh for God's sake...
I like it. I don't see why the hate.
And it's even gotten me interested in the first series and manga now

I thought they would give us a little recap and then get into the new stuff. Still if its different enough from the original series then I can let the whole retelling slide.

Shut up, man.
As far as I can see, you're saying the new series sucks after only two episodes have been released. Also, it seems you're basing it on the art style... which is only slightly changed (I do prefer the original art style at the moment). That's gay. Stop being a *****.

There are multiple other reasons.
Being a remake, it starts with some random bad guy almost destroying a city...

OK. Better. I agree with that. I didn't like the first episode either. We got the Philosopher's Stone. Check... Kimbley got an early intro, and so did the main cast. It was... a strange episode.
But what is wrong with episode two? It's a good recap, and told the backstory of FMA in one episode. Also, they basically confirmed its going to follow the manga for this round.
I don't think there's enough material present to dismiss the remake as ****, whatever your take on the first two episodes are.

Well they can't retell the same story that would be boring, i liek how they're speeding some things up and changing how it's portrayed ie the Alchemist exam, i guess they're assuming people have watched the first series.

They are.
Even if you haven't seen the first series, it doesn't seem like its necessary for you to watch it if you haven't. This works well as a stand alone. I guess that means it's a good remake as far as quickly "summarizing" the backstory.

watch the first one, brotherhood basically says "hell, everyone knows the characters anyway...lets just throw the elric brothers into the middle of the series and not introduce the secondary characters."
Brotherhood was made for people who watched the first anime and read the manga to compare the two

The new series if definitely "new audience friendly", so long as you know the premise and main characters of the first season. It feels like flashback in a lot of ways for those of us well versed in the show.
If it really sticks to the manga, which it's been hinting, it'll diverge at some point. It might make for a boring 20ish episodes but they'll be plenty more after that will be unique material.
I'm actually in the camp that thought the anime divergence was actually superior to the manga. If you thought the first series was "out there" the manga's fallen off the wagon. But it's still entertaining, so it'll be a decent ride.

How is that a problem, Bela Lugosi Z grade movie villains suck in a serious Anime.

Oh lord, please, no. Don't get him started. What? I want to know what he means? If it is stuff that is "out there" there isn't anything that is extremely ridiculous in comparison to the anime in the manga. Like pulling freaking Jesus Christ of all things out of their ***** out of nowhere.

Hmm, well, given the open nature of the second half of the original series, they kept things in touch with some of the final events shared by the manga a certain death , and in doing so created a product that more closely resembled a drama piece centered around all these action elements. Whereas the manga absorbs itself further in the alchemic nature of things, and kind of thrives in all sorts of immunities and superpowers and concepts and seems to carry with it a lighter tone. I still like it, but it's a bit more, I guess, cartoony or comicish.
I look forward to seeing comparisons regardless as things progress.

One thing that I dislike about the new series is that so far, they haven't been able to really capture whatever it was that made the other show feel as sad/tragic. The whole Nina thing, the first series really made me feel sad for that but it this one it was kinda like, ehh, whatever.
I think that the first series might have spent two episodes on that story and maybe they gave you more stuff with Nina so you could like her more as a character and get attached. The same thing with the brothers first fight against Scar. Ed's whole scene just felt way more intense in the first series to me and I had an emotional reaction when Ed made his deal with Scar.
I hope that the whole series doesn't have this feel to it. Some, really only one, would call that emo, but I don't see whats so bad about a show creating characters that the viewer gets emotionally attached to or feels some connection with. I don't know how people twist that into being a negative somehow.

I think Brotherhood is alright. I do think it doesn' t have the same sad effect and feelings the first serie brought, but it' s only the few first episodes. I' m not gonna judge too much. I' m really looking forward to watchign more.Especially since it follows the manga. :)
