I haven't followed the show since it got picked up for US license some years ago and I'm waiting for when Cartoon Network stops with the filler arcs to resume watching but I hear about Naruto from other sources on the internet and a friend who follows the series religiously and it seems from what I've heard that the series is setting itself up for finishing. Just wondering if others here would agree.

The mangaka has been saying that since 2 years ago. The manga is winding down, but it has not wrapped up yet. I would guess that it'll conclude in another 2-3 years. Three years at the max, unless some long and winding story arc pops up, in which case, it would hardly be close to being considered finished.

Shounen goes on forever until it stops being popular...

Well, probably by the end ot 2010 for the manga. The manga is roughly 100 chapters ahead of the anime, and the manga has roughly 100 chapters to finish off the remaining plot lines. I'd gauage the anime has about 125-150 episodes left in it, probably 2-3 years.

Nowhere near.

Perhaps.
I felt this way too recently.
But at the same time, you have to remember:
Compared to how long DragonBall Z was, this could turn to be maybe even a 3-series long epic
Perhaps I'd agree with a 2 year plan. It definitely has the hype to last even longer, however.

It can last longer, but Kishimoto has said himself that it's drawing to a close. He has other projects that he would like to work on.

You forgot, Sasuke admits his mad love for Naruto and admits that he's been Orachmou(sp)'s b*tch
and Tsunade dies because this is Naruto and all adults are screwed or evil.

This.
Every time that it feels like Naruto is starting to come to a close, they find some way to expand the story out even further. Once Sasuke beat Itachi, his whole reason for leaving the village was supposed to be gone and because he hasn't really done any criminal act, he could kinda come home... but then they came up with something to expand it even further.
The Akatsuki came to the Konoha looking for Naruto. Had they captured him, you would have eventually had Sasuke in the presence of Naruto again and the potential for the end of the series arc... but not it looks like Naruto will beat Pain or Shikamaru's team will find and kill the real Pain and the two (Naruto and Sasuke) will have to face off at some other time.
But even with all of this, they sent Sasuke off to capture the 8 tails, which he hasn't done yet so who knows when he's gonna even come back to possibly be sent on a mission where he'll come across Naruto.
If the writer wanted to end Naruto, he could have in a logical way, months and years ago, but he hasn't. As long as it's popular, I don't think it's gonna end.

I don't detect any sarcasm so... I will clarify for you. Those events are just his opinion about what should happen before it ends.

I don't think that Naruto would be finished for a couple of more years.
The manga hasn't been wrapped up yet.
And besides with the number of Naruto fanatics, i don't think that they will be ending it soon.
We are talking about the Manga and how there is only a few villains left...

And they're tying them in to each others' past even. Yeah, the ability to end the series after a major arc or two certainly exists.

Well seriously...what's left. Danzou's coup (10), the lightning fodder ninja (5), Killerbee (10), the Kage Summiit (15) (if it really happens), Sasuke and Team Emo (20), and Madara (20). You could wrap this up in 80 chapters if you wanted to which is the end of 2010.
