View Full Version : The Tale of (my) Achilles

So this past January I was with some friends playing a game of flag football, (we'd play tackle, but they're all a bunch of whiners). But instead of wearing my worn out canvas vans slippers I wore my brand spanking new Adidas football cleats. Bad idea. About two hours into the game, I was on the line ready to bumrush the opposing QB. Once the ball was hiked I sprinted forward, however, as I and the whole of my body moved forward, my right foot remained firmly flat on the ground. I heard a loud *POP* and fell instantly to the ground. It felt like somebody had come from behind and kicked me in the leg. It was the second most painful thing I've ever experienced.
After two weeks of walking funny and in pain, I broke down and went to the doctor. I had a partially torn achilles tendon. The achilles tendon is that muscle that lets you push off the ground when walking, or stand on your tip-toes. I've had a cast on my right leg since January 17 and today, at 2:10pm, have an appointment to have it removed and see what progress my achilles has made. I may need another cast, depending on the results. Since I work in construction, I haven't worked in all this time. I use crutches to move around when I go out. My friends have called me everything from Hop-A-long to cripple. Needless to say I am hoping that I won't need another cast and that I can come out of the doctors office walking.
Walking would be nice for a change.

One question that comes to mind is what the first most painful thing was.
Did your cleat get stuck or what?

First answer: First most painful thing was when I sliced my right hand open with some broken glass and could see the insides of my palm. Quite disgusting. My grandmother poured hot water on the open wound. To this day I still don't understand her logic. I was 8 so it made quite an impression.
Second answer: Yep, if your not used to cleats you can hurt yourself. E.g. me. I had used cleats before but they were soccer cleats so the spikes are more like nubbies rather than spikes. Football cleats spikes are quite big.
Update: Came back from the doc, all's good. Just gotta use a raise in my shoe for the next month and avoid running at all cost. :)

That's pretty horrible. I've had some pretty bad flesh wounds (gashes, etc) but I would take those over tearing a tendon. *shivers*

I'll attempt a cultural translation.
flag football
Like Tag Rugby, I think. "Non-contact American Football".
football cleats
Football boots. Cleat = Shoe with studs.
bumrush
To charge/Tackle
opposing QB
???
the ball was hiked
Probably means thrown out of a scrum/huddle situation and into play.

Opposing QB= Quarterback on the opposite team. A quarterback is the person who throws the ball.
@Trefellin: That's a good idea.

Ouch, that sounds painful. Couldn't imagine what kind of pain you must have been in.

Oh, everything ends in tears, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to charge into this and do something rash. It'll be fun for awhile until we get divorced and I get half of...whatever it is that I get half of. :smokin:

Visual Aid.
If the QB hasn't let go of the ball yet that is considered a sack. Meaning they took negative yards.

A tendon is not a muscle. A tendon is tissue that attaches your muscles to your bones.
Probably means thrown out of a scrum/huddle situation and into play.

It's the first play shown in this video.
