AnimeNation '08 Award Ballot

Creating a separate thread (just as last year) since it'll be a lot easier to keep count of the votes.

Rules & Notes:



Just as last year, the poll will close after one week (January 23).
Feel free to edit as often as you like; I won't be counting the votes until the poll closes.
If you don't know who to vote for, just leave it blank.
Only vote for one member per award. Meaning that if I see something that looks like this: "Oh, I dunno. It's a tie between THIS guy and THAT guy," I'm only going to count the vote for THIS guy because he came first in the sentence.
If you want to join in on keeping count, feel free to do so. PM me and we'll compare each other's results so as to better verify the list. (Or you can just wait until I post my list and scream at me for getting something wrong. Whichever you prefer.)

EDIT: Minoru = biggest troll. (ThatProudAsainGuy and ZSYgayday or whatever his name was are perfect contenders.)
Just to clarify on the Minoru Award - it's not for the biggest troll. The Minoru award is given to the member who is just... so bloody far off the beaten mental track that their mere existence on a public discussion forum is flamebait. Everything they post is guaranteed to turn into a conflagration, and they often end up getting themselves banned.

Past Award Winners/Nominees of the Minoru Award include:
Minoru (for whom the award is named), for an extended discussion on how he intended to be genetically resequenced (in his lifetime) as an immortal asian superbeing. I am not making that up, I swear. Banned in an extended match of whack-a-mole.

VSh (nominated, beaten out by Minoru), for the "Japan is the lost tribe of Israel" thread, among others. A very intelligent individual, with some remarkably unusual views on many things.

Zugzwang, et al., for the "Demiurge Consciousness" discussions. Another very intelligent individual, who at that time held some remarkably unusual views.

SKaze, for taking the 2D complex thing to a whole other level. Do a search for the thread, you'll laugh your *** off. Not stupid by any means, but probably the least intelligent of the Minoru contenders.

Tiiba (nominated), for his views on Artificial Intelligence, as practically demonstrated by the Craftsman 16oz claw hammer. Once again, a very intelligent individual, and not just in the sense evidently reserved for certain hand tools.


So that's the general spirit of the award. In layman's terms, you nominate the one wacko who's caused the most lulz in 2008.

Possible contenders for 2008 include, but are certainly not limited to:

mugener - for an extended discussion in the Ask John forum where he supported his arguments with statistics that don't yet exist, then criticized other members for not providing data to challenge his position. :unsure:

Eva_Yojimbo - I can't simply write him off as a troll, since he ultimately seemed to believe what he was saying. Made the Evangelion forum interesting for a bit at the end of 2007, carrying over into 2008.

There are four other members who deserve honorable mentions. I won't actually mention them, but they're kooky enough to qualify.
Happiest Member: Until the "20 years in jail for reading manga" thread came up, I'd have said goddessofanime.
Angriest Member: Tama83, who evidently lacks enough things in the real world to get mad about.

Switching to an utterly agreeable persona to mess with Eva_Yojimbo's head was sheer brilliance, and Jimmy didn't pick up on it for at least a dozen pages. I howled. :lol:

I concur. I must admit one of my moments of enlightenment happened when I first read an ubiquitous new thread by a certain "Zugzwang". Several instances of transcendental awareness seemed to fuse in one glorious moment as my consciousness inwardly contracted, then inverted without, never slowing even as I reached a symbiotic paroxysm. I emerged a new being, that day, and have since been wondering how much lesser I would be if I'd never read those three posts. Less aware of what this world contains or can produce, that's for sure. I have Zuggy to thank for that. ^_^

Whether it was LT's fault or not, I do believe that conspiracies dealing with internet relationships is a ****** reason to get banned, even if the girl was in favor of most of the mods on this forum.

This is why I don't trust internet relationships, this is why I act anti sexual when it comes to girls I like on here.

That's not really such a problem. An example of something I would do but would result in a ban: Posting my picture that everyone wants to see so badly (Wink at Jia) would none the less get me banned for the following reason: Spamming, thread hijacking.

And there is no way around it either I could make a Thread about my picture but that in itself would result in a deleted thread since picture threads were banned a long time ago.

Oh, I know. But you've decided to use more tact than when you first joined, and it's let people get to know you and see your sense of humor. This is why, way back when, I repeatedly protested your ban. You're one of the members that makes AN a fun and interesting place. Absolutely nobody knows more about lingerie in Evangelion, and that's a fact. Not Evamonkey, not Reichu - none of 'em.
The underlined parts are relevant. When I first encountered Tom, I didn't really see the person behind the views, and... well, it was easy to see just an outspoken person writing long rants I couldn't really understand about various rather unusual topics. If I'm honest, I wasn't entirely kind in my responses.

Once I got to know the person a little better... Tom Servo turned out to be an interesting and fun person, and definitely one of the people whose I'd hate to see get banned or leave the forum for any other reason.

Best Grammar: Leader Desslock. Can this award really go to anyone other than Dess? I may be verbose, but Desslock is the forum's finest wordifyer.

Most Verbose: Leader Desslock. Although maybe I should vote for myself, if that were not inappropriate. I tend to go on a bit. I ramble more, though. He actually makes his words count.

Most Sarcastic: GreatNekoKoneko. The man has made an art form out of not taking anything on this forum entirely seriously, and his replies should always be passed through the sarcasm detector for best results.

Most Unique: Fujyoshi. There is another self-identified 'rotten girl' on the forum, but Rebekah occupies a niche which is hers and hers alone.

Most Philosophical: Holy Knight. Much as in the case of the grammar award, there can be no serious discussion regarding this. I salute ol' Frenchy for always looking at life's questions with an eye for the original and unusual answer.

Most Abstract: Tom Servo. I am... not even entirely sure what this should mean, but I feel like probably my nomination is appropriate, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Best Use of Smilies: tenshi_a. I know, it's probably favouritism, but I do think she uses smilies effectively to make her posts come to life.

Thread Slayer: Fujyoshi. Sometimes once The Fooj has spoken, her post is a tough act to follow. ;)

The Minoru Award: ProudAsian. They hold broadly similar views, in fact. Perhaps Minoru's views go a little further than those of ProudAsian, but they fit into the same general group. That group being those who believe in Asians as the finest beings on the planet.
-Happiest Member: Superplough. He's always ready with a smile, and a lighthearted post. Would that we could all be so apparently untroubled.
-Angriest Member: Kenpachi. In previous years this might easily have gone to Jae, Bern or Sendo. For the past year they all seem to be taking it easy, so it must be this man. Sorry, gotta call it like I see it, Ken.

Best AN Couple: Kagura x Black Knight. I don't know if I can or should vote for myself... and these guys are married, making it work and all. They deserve the accolade. Of course I do like the couple I'm in, but modesty forbids...

Most likely to receive the banhammer: Whoever didn't vote for Haruhi in at least one category.

If you could unban a member, it would be: Lord Timaeus. I always got on with the guy better than was typical. Honestly I always liked him, and while I can't say that he was blameless in all those events we have heard so much about... that doesn't mean I don't miss his presence. Although I know a second vote won't count, I'd also like to at least mention Van/Westlo. His ban was... kind of a shame, considering he was only responding to an appalling troll.

Most Likely to Get Beat Up For Saying The Wrong Thing: Yukimura-Sanada. Much as in the case of Lord Kuromorphaeus, I don't actually dislike Yuki, but... this award fits him. Sorry Yuki. I wouldn't be the one to administer the beating... -_-;

Best Prons: Prons. There was some tough competition this year though. Good game, Prons. :thumbsup:

Best Title: tenshi_a. She's had a succession of good titles in 2008, and is responsible for my own ava/title combo, which at one point was a matching set with her own.

Best Signature: Leader Desslock. I love that quote so damn much.

Best Artist: Shiroiyuki. I really like Tom Servo's style, but Tom only draws the one subject, so... I gotta give it to Shiro.

Best AN Banner Designer: Shiroiyuki. You have to give the credit where it is due. Requires no explanation really.

Best Mod: Haruhi. Honestly... even though she's not the most active, when she does make a post wearing the 'Mod Hat' you can count on it to be worthy of a round of applause. Plus... I'll say without shame or equivocation that she's just the most awesome and deserves to win at least one award. I like some of the other mods too, but Haru has been moddin' it old school since way back when. Countless name changes later, she's still awesome.

Best Name Change: The triumphant return of Jae Hoon. I forget what his name was changed to for a while there, but really his original (as far as I know) choice from KoF suits him much better than that (I think...) Samurai Seven inspired name.

Alpha Male: Reidar. I refuse to write one word of explanation for this choice. It requires none.

Alpha Female: Goddess of Anime. With the unquestionably Alpha moderator VidelCoolGirl absent from the forums due to personal matters, I find that our Goddess is definitely the Alpha of the pack.

Funniest: Tom Servo. What a sense of humour. I've laughed out loud at more of Tom's posts than I care to remember.

Smartest: Nakey. I learn things from this man. Useful things.

Next Member to Become a Moderator: Holy Knight. I can't think of a better choice. He's calm, intelligent, and eloquent.

Member whom you would most like to see a picture of: Haruhi. Why lie. I might also mention Goddess of Anime if I could name two people.

Most Missed Former Member: Tenou. Ehh... I choose to believe that Videl isn't a former member, she's just... resting. She'll be back. I hope Levon will be too. On the other hand, Tenou's presence had been steadily decreasing for some time, and she needed to POST MOAR even before the trickle of posts dried up completely. If you're reading this, the forum simply isn't the same without you.

Most Respected Member: Leader Desslock. There are a lot of members I respect, but an award of this nature is about recognising a certain authority. Not authority granted by position, but authority which is conferred by the respect of a community. The kind of authority which means nothing more than that people will listen to what you say.

I appreciate all the nominations I got, guys. I can't see The Powers That Be making me a mod though. I always bug them about it whenever anyone I like gets banned, so... probably that's enough to get me permanently struck off the shortlist.

I would think that, but I might also think that if she is spending ALL her money on manga, there might not be any left over for a PC. It isn't as though manga is something that's easy to cut back on for a fan, because sometimes volumes go out of print disturbingly quickly.

And no, I'm not going to sift through each of your votes and ask myself, "Hmmm, would Prons be qualified for this award?" If you're not going to respect the awards by giving it some thought, then why should I treat your votes any different?

Furthermore, had a few members done the exact same except with, say, Desslock's name, I'd exclude their votes too. And just so happens... no one else is doing it. You and your banned comrades are the only ones. Imagine that.

But there's a difference between saying you're going to ban someone and actually doing it. I think he'd continue to talk the traditional Pronsian trash, but when it came down to actually wielding mod powers, he'd use them quite fairly.

One thing I do see him doing: Instead of deleting user posts that cross the line, I can absolutely see him editing the contents of offending posts to make the user look like an idiot. And I have to think it'd be an effective technique...

I can also see him playfully editing the posts of members who know better than to take him seriously, just for the hell of it. I'd post some well-thought out, carefully crafted Wall Of Text to support my position, and I'd come back an hour later to find that it had been edited down to "amirite?" :lol:

I try to be careful of that. As much as an avatar is associated with us regarding these forums, our user-names are what differentiates us here. We all get caught unawares by certain things at various times and I've not yet come across that type of situation.

Prons inspired me, so when I learned there was an Afro Prinny in Disgaea 3, I made an avatar that said "DYNOMITE!" on it, with a picture of the afro prinny a while back. I only use it on livejournal tho.

Thanks for voting me either the winner or the runner up in several awards, including the votes for me as half of the best AN couple. I assure you, it is tenshi_a who contributes the larger share of awesomeness, and I'm delighted to see that she came in second for several of the awards too.

The awards for the most part reflect what I believe is the best of the AN community, and I'm more pleased by that than I could be by any personal popularity. The community here is sadly diminished, but it is still made up of some good people.

Don't hold your breath waiting for me to become a mod, though. I'm pretty sure that I would have got the old 'shoulder tap' sometime during the last round of appointments if it was ever going to happen. :lol:
