So in the event of a nuclear detonation would you be screwed or not? Well now you can have your answer.
Nuclear weapons are often measured in kilotons, but that doesn't really tell the story of a weapon's destructive power.
Now, a new Google Maps mashup called Ground Zero lets you see the radius of thermal damage caused by a nuclear weapons blast (http://www.fas.org/nuke/intro/nuke/thermal.htm) (< Clicky) centered at the address of your choice.
The visualization tool comes courtesy of Carlos Labs, an Australian coding firm. It appears that they used the same (or similar) data as the Federation of American Scientists. The FAS writes that most buildings within the inner circle will be "completely destroyed." The next circle will be fire-filled, and the outer regions would experience major damage from the blast shockwave.
If you want to understand what these colored circles mean, head over to the Department of Energy's Historical Test Films page (http://www.nv.doe.gov/library/films/testfilms.aspx) (< Clicky) and take a look at some of the footage of the American military's nuclear weapons tests.
I would choose the most likely target for a nuclear strike near you. Now.....
http://www.carloslabs.com/projects/200712B/GroundZero.html
Oh yeah, choose meteor impact first, it'll be halarious, trust me.
The most likely target near me would be Los Angeles,CA. I'm more than safe from all forms of nuclear devices, except for the freakin' Soviet Tsar Bomba (biggest bad boy of them all), that would F with all mah shizzles.

I sit about a hundred Miles between Boston and new York City, either way I'm screwed

They were all a bit underwhelming, except for the asteroid and tsar.
That said, the asteroid one was kinda scary... One thing puzzles me, however. Wouldn't the radius differ depending on the asteroid's size?
Hara!

I love picking Tsar Bomba. It so neatly destroys New York City.
EDIT:

Hey, fun fact.
The area shown is the damage radius. How bright do you think the blast would actually be? How would the pictures from space look?

You would see the flash from the Tsar bomb hitting NYC in broad daylight from 1500 miles away.
goes back to nuking Pittsburgh.

It's comforting to know that if "The Terrorists" get their hands on a thermonuclear weapon, I'll be safe from pretty much anything less than the Tsar...

More like, thanks to google 'The Terrorists' can pinpoint where to drop thier bombs for massive damage.
Hara!

Like hell. The idea of a terrorist actually obtaining a nuclear weapon, much less creating one that works, smuggling it into the country, and somehow detonating it in the air is... well...

I'd be safe from most of the smaller nuclear weapons, although the Mk28 would come dangerously close to wiping Soluzar from the face of the planet. I don't live that close to a major city.

I live in Phoenix, so I'm good. Seriously, out of all of the cities in the US that could be bombed, Phoenix is definitely NOT on the top of the list.

Like I said I doubt Hartford Connecticut makes a bit of a difference, but when you have two major cities within a days driving distance between them, uh... where do i run first? Canada?

Holy crap, that Czar Bomba is massive. When I pointed that thing at New Kent county in Virginia, (I prefer the kill zone to be in a more rural area, away from the non-inbred population center of Richmond), the center blast radius engulfed four to five of its surrounding counties!
I'm loving it. :smokin:

Tsar Bomba (Russian: Царь-бомба),is the nickname for the RDS-220 hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Иван" (Ivan) by its developers) — the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Developed by the Soviet Union.
Approximately 97% of the total energy resulted from fusion alone (as such, it was one of the "cleanest" nuclear bombs ever created, generating a very low amount of fallout relative to its yield)
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb158/ComradeMP-2/Tsar01.jpg
Dropped from over 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) and detonated at 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) above the earth, the Tsar Bomba's massive fireball, measuring 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) in diameter touched the ground, and nearly reached the altitude of the deploying Tu-95 bomber
It loves you too

Other than the asteroid, the only one that comes close to killing me is the Tsar (it kills the next town over, but I'm safe :)), and that's if the foolish terrorists choose to kill Boston instead of New York.

But does the radius also has the effects of radiation counted in? I mean if a Nuclear Bomb like Tsar blows up NY, and I live in the far left half of Long Island, will the radiation effect me and screw my body up to the point that I look like that Toxic Waste guy from Robocop 1?
Anyway we better be scared if the Terrorist somehow get their hands on a Asteroid to use on us. :P

You know, if they bombed me here in the middle of the Mohave Desert in the middle of the summer, the worst it could do is cool the place off a bit.
I say Bring It. Biking 'round the lake in the shade of the mushroom cloud might make the for a nice outing.

This is an interesting thread. I've always been curious about this since I'm somewhat close to L.A. which seems like it would be a nice target...for people that have never been there. Fortunately I'm ok where I am, assuming that site is accurate.

That article was awesome from the very first sentence:
Dildo has a long history, going as far back as 2000 BCE when Maritime Archaic Native Americans resided at Anderson's Cove.
The "See also" section at the bottom of the page is nothing short of incredible. I have some reading to do. :P

I would likely only get 2nd degree burns from an astroid impact in New York. We got an IRS processing center here, and a company that used to make parts for missles (don't know if they still do), so we may get nuked

Being afraid of nuclear strikes is so 1960s.
Let's all move on and start discussing the threat of cultural invasion(For us Americans), as well as how today's events in the middle east relate to the book of Revelations.
Nah I'm just kidding, those topics are far too controversial. Discussing the destruction of our world by nuclear weapons is far more socially acceptable.
I live in Orange County, California, so unless a country with nuclear arms suddenly decides Jamba Juice loving tanned up individuals who have taken the show "The O.C" as a license to shout out their problems among friends so that everyone within a mile radius can hear them is a threat to their religion or way of life, I think I'll be okay.
Which leads me to this question: Which came first, The hit TV teen drama "The O.C" or people in Orange County being extra dramatic?

I'm guessing they both happened at the same time, I mean that's not like which came first the can or the can opener. It's more of a social back ground and a TV show that probably associates with it.

Michael Bay....is a complete and utter ****ing idiot if he does not do a second one. The movie might as well say SEQUEL in size 60,000 letters that jump from the screen in the credits. I WANT MORE!!!

He is making a second one, it comes out in June IIRC
The transformers could do more damage than any of the bombs in this game (except the asteroid)
