Normally I wouldn't post anything military related, but this is one of those stories that needs to be told from time to time.
Outnumbered, but not outgunned
Marines overcome 8-to-1 odds during an 8-hour battle

The platoon was in a remote area of southwestern Afghanistan when it happened — the kind of massive ambush and firefight that is the stuff of Marine legend.
Patrolling the town of Shewan in Farah province, the troops from 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, were attacked by a small group of insurgents that eventually swelled to more than 250 fighters. They had enough rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun ammunition to wage an eight-hour battle against a well-trained, well-equipped Marine force.
And in the end, the results were devastating — for the insurgents.
More than 50 enemy fighters were killed in the battle, and several more wounded, Marine officials said. A single Marine corporal, serving as the unit’s designated marksman, killed 20 insurgents by himself, using only 20 shots to do it.
The estimated 30 Marines involved, on the other hand, rolled away relatively unscathed. No Marines were killed and only one was wounded in the battle, the platoon commander said.

And this is why it's a bad idea to ambush a Marine combat unit.
Audie Murphy would've given this a thumbs up, and I think that's the highest praise any soldier could receive.

And I love these kinds of stories. They'll have a great story to tell their families back home.

That is amazing. I'd love to read about the details of the battle. I can see this story being made into a film.

How is this unusual?
Not exactly unusual more of a reminder/fact that our military strength isn't just a bunch of small fry.
Basically it's testing that phrase "Army of one" and the results are impressive.

Marines are far better trained and armed than the insurgents, not much of a surprise.
What's really the point of this?
to prove that Rambo wasn't just a Hollywood stunt.

Hardly impressive compared to Samson killing 1000 men with an ***'s jawbone (http://www.animenation.net/forums/showthread.php?t=218817).

You can't compare the two. Simo was a god of war. He was put on this earth just to be a killing machine, like Samson.

A designated marksman (DM) is actually a guy with an M16 but with a scope mounted on top. His job is to literally aim, shoot, aim, shoot at targets, one by one. Sounds like he did his job pretty damn well.

are you talking about Simo or the Marine, because if you're talking about the Marine then you need to click on the link and read the whole Story. The DM was out in the open getting shot at. Plus combat units don't use Iron sights, we use RCOs or any other type of optic.

Simo, after reading the Wiki article.
The Marines would probably use a scope and the M16, since they are in visible combat and they can get by with a scope.

It just goes to show that the terrorists have the mental capaticity of a chimp.
People get concerned over another 9/11, and go paranoid and junk (see: Barack Obama=terrorist scare tactics used by McCain). Yeah right, not with these guys watching over us!

the smartest people in control of them over there are in hiding. Probably planning something to attack us huge with.
But is Afghanistan, or wherever Osama Bin Ladin is, capable of a strategic fight with the number of men he keeps losing to the Marines, if that is even the case?

Don't underestimate these guys. They're just as determined and tough as the Marines are, and you'd be surprised by how smart these guys are when it comes to fighting. The most recent case I can recall was Somalia 1993, or back to the early 80s when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

But are they effectively capable of delivering an all out war on our country alone? Are they capable of dropping a nuke in the middle of Manhattan or any other major city on our soil?
We are comparing a force of many to a force of few who are well equipped and well trained to counter a lot of fire fight.

And don't forget the Chechans! I'll never forget this one time when we were taking a convoy from Haditha, this bright-red haired guy with white skin was always seen coming in and out of detainment from there. From what the guys at the facility told us he was Chechan, and always caught with an illegal amount of weapons but kept getting released by authorities for one reason or another.

i remember hearing a story while in school. Apparantly a squad of soldiers were ambushed in a pick-up zone in Veitnam. The commander grabbed his gun, told the soldiers to get out of there, and started killing. He got a few rounds in his legs, went down, and kept fighting. At this point, the ambushers realized he was the biggest threat and targeted him alone while the others escaped. He killed about 10 of them before he died, and earned the medal of honor.

It's not really surprising when you consider that Marines are highly trained and motivated while the Taliban forces probably consist of a few hardcore fighters and a large amount of poor farmers who have no way of earning money during the growing season except signing up for militias.
