View Full Version : Kakashi; A bad mentor?

Kakashi fans, don't get offended, Kakashi is a favorite character of mine, but i've always had this one problem with him. Doesn't Kakashi seem like a very bad teacher? Now, it's no secret that Sasuke was his favorite, in every sense of the word, student. And, it seems that he cares nothing about his other students? He always talks about teamwork and comrades being important, but the only student he seemed to care about, or be there for was Sasuke. What do you think?

Yeah, he'd probably be good at training one person, but being a group sensei was not his thing, given his personality. In a group, he'd just focus on the genius one, and care nothing for the others.

Didn't you see episode 81? You saw how far Kakashi's training took Naruto and Kakashi even admitted he likes Naruto a lot now.

Yeah, and like I said, he's only training one student. While Sasuke was around, Kakashi couldn't have cared less for Naruto. Now that Sasuke's gone, Kakashi likes Naruto all of a sudden. Thank goodness Jiraiya came. Because if he didn;t, Naruto may have been dead before Shippuuden.

Yeah since you put it that way, I guess you're right. He probably prefers giving his full undivided attention and can't balance it out.

The biggest thing is he trusts Sasuke enough to teach him Chidori, but when he sees Naruto learned Rasengan, he tells Jiraiya he was wrong for teaching to him. So, Sasuke can learn new jutsu, but Naruto can't? Kakashi's kind of a hypocrite.

I think his main concern was giving Sasuke the power to achieve his goal has he probably sensed sasuke would be willing to do anything to get power

The reason why Kakashi focused on Sasuke for a while, was because Orochimaru was going after him.
Now (in the anime) he's focusing a lot more on Naruto because Akatsuki is after him.
He has been trying to protect the student in danger, that's all.

the reason why he taught him chidori was because he didnt want sasuke to think he needed more power from the cursed seal

Ok, if he wanted to teach Sasuke Chidori, that's fine. But, this is what gets me. When he sees that Jiraiya taught Naruto Rasengan, he criticizes him, and says Naruto should have been trusted with that jutsu, even if it was for measure against the Akatsuki. So, he takes interest in Sasuke's life and cares about Sasuke, but he couldn't care any less what happens to Naruto, since he didn't want Naruto to learn Rasengan, even if it was to help protect him. It seems that if Naruto were to die, Kakashi wouldn't care, as long as he still had Sasuke.

because kakashi knew that the unfinished rasengan is stronger then chidori and that naruto wasnt as skilled a ninja as sasuke was, to go and say kakashi wouldnt care if naruto died is goin a little overboard, rasengan is one of the strongest jutsus out there and was created by the 4th and to teach a 12 yr old kid that...
and chidori was a move perfected by kakashi and he knew he could teach sasuke it knowing that sasuke could handle it, i mean the destructive full power rasengan is 10 times stronger then chidori, chidori is an assassination move.
and kakashi was told by jiraya to let him train naruto and plus tsunadae trained sakura it all makes sense to me

Sasuke's whole life was about power and vengence, so to teach a kid that already has those two bad qualities wasn't exactally smart. And, with Rasengan, you can control the power output, like when Jiraiya first used it on the guy, he didn't kill him, the guy just went spiraling into a stand. But the point is, Kakashi was wrong to say anything. When he had Naruto as a student, he didn't train him, and wasn't much help. Kakashi had his chance with Naruto, and he blew it. Kakashi didn't really train Naruto, and did nothing but call him stupid and tear him down. Now, Naruto is learning new things with Jiraiya and Kakashi still won't get off his case. So, with the Rasengan situation, it was none of Kakashi's bussiness, Naruto was no longer his student, and was no longer on his team. And, like I said, he never spent any time with Naruto, so where does he get off trying to tell Jiraiya anything about Naruto? Jiraiya knew, and cared, more about Naruto within the little while of knowing him. Jiraiya even saw Naruto's resemblence to the Fourth within the little time he spent with Naruto, it took kakashi three years to recognize Naruto's talent and see his resemblence to Yondaime.

Kakashi had recognized the changes in Sasuke before he taught him Chidori.l Revenge was becoming less and less important to him, and it was startingt to show. Telling Jiraiya he was wrong tio teach naruto Rasengan was because of how reckless Naruto is. he was willing to use it just to show off. Even Jiriya later adnitted he shouldn't have taught Naruto the move.
Kakashi spent plenty of time training Naruto. He didn't favor one student over the other. The thing was, Naruto caught on slower than the rest of them. This wasn't the classroom where he could coddle him like Iruka did. Not to mention that to someone as selfish as Naruto, unless he got 100% of the attention, then it was unfair.
Kakashi was a great mentor. He got more out of his students than anyone could have hoped for. Plus his students were probably the most difficult kids that you could deal with. No ione could have brought them that far when they were just beginning.

t wasn't about getting 100% of the attention, with Kakashi, he barely got 20%. Jiraiya didn't give Naruto 100% of the attention, but he gave more than Kakashi. Yeah, he did a great job. Yet all of his students wound up leaving him, one student was taken from him, and the other two just outright left. Ironic, since he never passed a team before because they weren't good enough, then the frst team he does get all leave him because he wasn't good enough.

Kakashi spent equal time with all his students, until Jiraiya came along and insisted on training Naruto himself. Then, and only then, did he not focus on Naruto. And after 3 years with Jiraiya, Naruto was barely better than when he left. all he did was use more and more of the Kyuubi. Yet the short time when Kakashi resumed his training, Naruto is able to not only use kage bunshins the proper way, he is actually able to use elemental manipulation. Says a lot about who did a better job teaching Naruto.

And, if it were up to Kakashi Naruto wouldn't have learned that. Remeber, in part 1, Kakashi didn't even want Naruto to learn Rasengan, so if it were up to him, Naruto wouldn't have learned base Rasengan until Shippuuden. So, Jiraiya took Naruto and molded him, Kakashi wouldn't have been able to continue with Naruto, if Jiraiya didn't give all the base work first. So jiraiya should have more credit than Kakashi. Jiraiya may have also taught Naruto more, we just haven't had a chance to see evrything.

That's where you're wrong. Kakashi did the base work in Part 1. Without him, Naruto's chakra control would be even crappier than it is. And I mentioned this before, but Kakashi didn't think it was a good idea to teach naruto Rasengan because of Naruto's recklessness and attitude. And Jiraiya even said it may have been a bad idea to teach him in his last talk with Tsunade. And we've seen all that Jiraiya taught Naruto, which was just using more of the Kyuubi's chakra. And look at how that turned out.

Sasuke is too emo for my liking. He didn't deserve all the attention that Kakashi gave him. I think part of the reason why Kakashi did teach Sasuke stuff is because Kakashi wanted Sasuke to learn more abilities and so on to maximize how to use his Sharingan even better or to take ita little further. It did seem at least at first to me like Kakashi favored Sasuke more than the other 2. Naruto was probably less liked out of the 3. Although, maybe Kakashi had hoped to pick up on something to further his abilities to use his Sharingan too. It might be another possibility he felt like he needed to protect, teach, etc. Sasuke because he felt he owed it to the Uchiha family because:
Kakashi lost his left eye in a battle while attempting to rescue his teammate, Rin. When Kakashi, Rin, & Obito tried to escape, the enemy induced a cave-in that crushed Obito's entire right half of his body. Before he died, Obito instructed Rin to implant his left eye into Kakashi. (Kakashi Gaiden)
I think Kakashi was and is a good mentor. At least he did take the time to help Naruto be able to control his chakra better than before. That could have really got out of control! No ninja or Sensei is perfect. I must admit Kakashi isn't as:
He got himself got in Zabuza's Water Prison Jutsu back in the earlier episodes of Naruto and Sasuke & Naruto had to create a plan to rescue him.
Nice way to show your students how to handle situations.. lol

the seal kakashi placed over the cursed seal was strengthened by the persons will and chidori was something to boost sasukes will in the sense that he wouldnt turn to the cursed seal and then eventually orochimaru for power. the reason why team 7 was the only team that kakashi passed was because no one got passed the two bell test which strengthened the teams cooperation with each other. then kakashi taught them all chakra control together, then as i said before kakashi taught sasuki chidori.
if you think about it kakashi never had the chance to teach naruto cause after the konoha destruction kakashi was sent on a bunch of missions until basically sasuke saw how strong naruto gotten and the whole rescue sasuke arc happened. after that jiraya took naruto for 3 yrs to train and he taught him well, the basic genjutsu reversal, clone timing controlling kyuubi power etc. and now in shippuden they arent in training anymore after they become chounin's^_^

Kakashi's expectations are too high. It's good to have high expectations, but not if they're are too high. If someone doesn't start out perfect and knowing everything it seems Kakashi would find them a hopeless case. Like the Bell Test, teamwork has to be built of a course of time, it's not something that all people just catch on to, but Kakashi didn't seem to realize that. He passed Team seven just because they gave food, and their teamwork was terrible, it was good sometimes, but not sterdy. Same with Naruto, he didn't start out as a genius, and Kakashi never seemed pleased with him. Then when Naruto does practice, and push himself, Kakashi says he is a knucklehead, and overdoes things. Naruto doesn't overdo anything, he just gives it his all and he has to work twice as hard since he's not naturally gifted and doesn't catch on just like that, like Sasuke does. But you can't expect Kakashi to understand that, since he is a genius, and only worked with the other genius in the group. From looking at things, Naruto could've been on Gai's team until Jiraiya showed up.

the giving the food to naruto was the whole point of the team work thats what kakashi wanted them to do, so your saying that the third was a bad mentor cause hes the one that invented the bell test to trest the teams teamwork. also everyone called him a knucklehead even after training like crazy as he does; jiraya sakura tsunadae and etc, so the way kakashi teaches isnt a way for them to feel loved and all it's a harder type of training and has a type of intellegence weaved into it. i would say kakashi is a better teacher then any other jounin cause he had naruto at the time who was the worst ninja around and taught him many things.
but anyways its a matter of opinion, i respect your opinion "jasminegreen", i mean its kinda hard to answer a rhetorical question after all

Kakashi was the one that turned the Bell Test into a teamwork thing. When the Third did it, it's was actually to test their skills in getting the bells, and also it weeded out the weakest one in the team. Because Orochimaru & Tsunade both got a bell and Jiraiya was stuck to a post when Oro & Tsunade left. I do respect your opninion, but i'm just still a bit sceptiacal. It just seems that Kakashi never really did anything for Naruto, it seemed that Jiraiya did most of the work, before taking Naruto away.

While Im not goin to say that Kakashi was a bad mentor to Naruto, I do have to say that Jiraiya was a better mentor than Kakashi. It was Jiraiya that taught Naruto about his two chakra and how to better control/manipulate these Chakra (ie: water walking technique and rasengan training) and he also spent three good years on Naruto and made him proficient on using his Kage Bunshin, Rasengan and the Kyubi.
Again, not to discredit Kakashi. If it wasnt for Kakashi, Naruto would not be able to realize his chakra element and develop the final step into perfecting his Rasengan. Maybe if Kakashi survives, he can contribute to Naruto's development and it would make him a Hokagel level shinobi one day.

Kakashi was a great teacher, and mentor, to Sasuke, but that's about it. Given Kakashi's personality, he shouldn't have been a group sensei. He should've become a private tutor, like Ebisu, and took Sasuke on as a private pupil. I doubt there's anything Naruto did under Kakashi that he couldn't do under another teacher just as well, if not better.

Kakashi training Sasuke:
Kakashi spent most of his time training Sasuke because both have Sharingan = who else is better at training someone with Sharingan than someone with Sharingan. No one in the village has it aside from those 2. Naruto fighting method is way different than Kakashi, can't train him to use Sharingan because he doesn't have it.
Chidori Vs Rasengan:
Sasuke wanted power and the curse seal was the quickest way to it. Kakashi thought that by giving him Chidori he could keep him from going to the seal when nothing else worked. Plus knowing who his opponent was going to be for the Chunnin Exams he needed Chidori to stand a chance. Naruto on the other hand had didn't have the best control of his chakra to be learning a move like Rasengan which is A-Rank as it is and Naruto would think it possible to take on anyone with it. Plus Jiraiya also told Kakashi that is was irresponsible for him to teach Chidori to Sasuke.
Even now Kakashi doesn't really take a big part in Naruto's training, show Naruto what elemental type he was and gave Naruto the idea on how to add wind to the Rasengan. Kakashi can't suppress Kyubi's chakra only Yamato can do that. That why Kakashi left with Team 10 because he wouldn't be doing much with Naruto.
In the end Kakashi was suppose to be Sasuke's mentor and Jiraiya was suppose to be Naruto's mentor.

And about the "100% attention" thing. Naruto has spent his entire life getting ignored and treated like dirt. And look what Kakashi did, he ignored Naruto just like everybody else. Naruto has to work trice as hard to get the same amount of respect and praise that Sasuke automatically gets for no reason. All Sasuke has to do is walk around and Kakashi is impressed, but, in order to get his attention/recognition, Naruto has to jump off a cliff and fly. An examle of that. During the Bell Test, Naruto uses KB, and Kakashi just stares and says, that Naruto can't hold the technique long and that he's still the worst student. Naruto went from being a deadlast to being able to use a Chunin/Jonin level technique, but Kakashi doesn't care and just tears Naruto down, again. Then later, Sasuke uses Katon, and Kakashi almost has a orgasm, saying that a Genin can't do Fire jutsu, even though Sasuke is from the Uchiha clan and fire is their specialty.

If the Third was so wise for doing it, why didn't Naruto learn anything under Kakashi? Kakashi should've just become a private tutor, like Ebisu, and took Sasuke on as a private student. Since he could work only with Sasuke, and Sasuke is already a genius. Naruto could've gotten some other teacher. What did Kakashi teach Naruto that some other teacher couldn't have done just a well, if not better? Because, given Kakashi's personality, he doesn't need to be a group leader/sensei.

He taught the whole team. He didn't single anyone out for personal training. The fact that he got Sasuke and Naruto to work together shows where he excels. He knew what buttons to push to motivate them the proper way during the tree climbing exercise. Go back and reread the Wave Arc.Who was Kakashi praising for their improvement? It was Naruto. Iruka even acknowledged how well he knew them and how far he hade brought them before the chunin exams.
The only time Kakashi even worked with Sasuke one on one, was before the third stage of the chunin exam. And why did he do that? because Jiraiya asked him to focus on Sasuke and he would train Naruto, that's why. Why was Kakashi spending time with Sasuke after Orochimaru's attack instead of Naruto? Because Jiraiya wanted Naruto to tag along with him, that's why.
You want to know what Kakashi did that no other teacher could do? He got Naruto to listen to him. He got him to think more about the team than himself. That's why he's a great mentor. He helped to change Naruto's mindset from simply being a childish, spoiled brat to being a ninja people could rely on.

Jiraiya didn't have the discussion about taking Naruto until sometime after the exam, after Kakashi had already decided to train Sasuke, and before Itachi came along. Because when Itachi comes to the village, Jiraiya is planning on taking Naruto with him to find Tsunade. Also, when Naruto first met Jiraiya, he seemed to want to get rid of Naruto, and I doubt Jiraiaya is that good of an actor. And, at the time of the Chunin exam, nobody was even supposed to know Jiraiya was in the village, the Third didn't even know. Jiraiya was the one that told Naruto to grow up. During the Rasengan training Naruto is begging Jiraiya to stay and help/watch him train. That's when Jiraiya told Naruto to grow up and act like a Shinobi, and Naruto said "Yeah, you're right."

Side note: I really like this thread, it's opened up my eyes to the teaching methods of both Kakashi and Jiraiya. When you haven't seen Part 1 in so long you start to forget all that was so great about it. Maybe a re-watch is due...

I smell a trolling Naruto-fanboy. Just so you know. i'm a girl, not a guy. And, i'm not trolling, I just feel strongly about the topic, and i'm replying back with my opinion. Last time I checked, this was a free country. If you don't like It or think it's trolling, then don't even bother psting, because the insaults do nothing for anyone, except prove how stupid you are for not being able to comunicate without leave your attitude out of it..

Wouldn't be in argument, if you'd leave and not come back.

All you have to do, is stop posting and talking to me. You're telling me to leave an argument, why not take your own advice? Because now, you just keep posting, and it's doing nothing but filling this thread with personal argumants. So, just leave, it's not complicated.

and your filling this thread with trolling, tbh, this is the only thread you post in, you dont even make an effort to post in other Naruto related threads, very few people will take you seriously and no-one agrees with what your saying

Well, as rude as some people are being, like you for example, someone would probably just jump down my throat in another thread too. So, if you think i'm trolling then stop talking to me, or go die. Which ever you prefer.

haha, now your really being pathetic, if you dont say stupid things then people wont say anything bad back to you, as for the stop talking to you or go die, last I checked you replied to my posts too, so this isnt just a 1 way thing. But fine, I tell you what, I will leave this thread for a few days, and I believe 1 of 2 things will probably happen, 1) people will give up posting and it will eventually just die out, or 2) people will continue to disagree with you and you will just be called a troll some more

Note, most people here have stop replying, so when my thread does die down, then i'll post in some other threads. I just like to work on one thread at a time, so i'm starting with mine. I don't care if it eventually dies down, that's what threads do.
