View Full Version : Internet becoming mainstream?

I've noticed that in the past few years, words that were once almost solely used on the internet (and with nerds) are starting to be used by.....well, everyone. Sometimes you'll be talking to someone who isn't a nerd, and they might say that they owned someone (in internet usage), sometimes even pwned. There are other things as well. Sometimes win is used. The rock radio station by me has everyday something called "Your moment of fail" in which they name something that someone did that was so stupid it baffles the mind. Which is then followed by the person saying "You fail!" and just "Fail!". Then there's the use of "interweb", which has become common, although even a few years ago nobody used it except for.....well, us.
Often this has caught on to people through internet gaming and XboxLive, but it's spreading a little. The question is, why is it becoming used more and more? Also, have any of you noticed this in other people, and what kind of stuff have you heard from them, like something you thought you would never hear?

More and more people at school are becoming familiar with 4chan. The end is near.

Internet is mainstream, since it crossed the line of being a luxury item and is heading towards a necessity. I would say the modernization of online gaming via consoles has had the greatest impact on all these internet terms. Xbox Live is pretty popular nowadays.
More and more people at school are becoming familiar with 4chan. The end is near.
Ironically, I heard a couple High School juniors today talking about 4chan, it was odd......but I resisted on joining in on the conversation :P

And when it becomes too familiar, people will find out what's on there and they will go ape. And then we'll all be screwed.

The internet in general is quite mainstream, but what I would call the "forum culture" really isn't.

... meh. if you're concerned about 4chan, then you're just a sellout. channers are basically just jumping on the meme bandwagon so that they can consider themselves higher than other people online.
guess what. internet memes are only awesome IN the internet. outside of it, its made of so much fail and AIDS, i cannot even begin to explain the extreme suckage and suckery.

But the gaming part is wiiiiiide open.
Anyway, even though the knowledge of 4chan spells trouble for anime fans, it's not the end of the World......of Warcraft.

Maybe it's just gaming culture that is permeating into real life. Stuff like 'pwned' and 'fail' is all right on the internet but I usually find that the younger people or the immature ones tend to use phrases like that.
I have to admit it make me furrow my brown when I heard 'pwned
for the first time. I thought the dude saying it couldn't speak properly. Obviously, I'm not a big gamer.
Then 'fail' is used way too often. Usually a euphemism to say that someone eff-ed up something or other.
I described something as 'epic' one time because it was an appropriate word. Then I was asked if I played WoW. Apparently, that word is associated with that game.
I wouldn't say mainstream but stuff like is heard a little bit too often nowadays.

Glad I won't be running into you anytime soon. Jesus.
I constantly spew the term out of habit, and it's quite evident to me that the meme culture is beginning to have its affect on my age range.
I'd rather get stupid with a bunch of friends reading stupid Ed articles and making memeingful ytmnds than getting high/drinking/damaging myself , that's for sure.

Those phrases don't apply to me because I live in a virtually a solely spanish speaking bubble. I only use english on internet forums or when I watch some American shows on tv.
Things are different in Mexico. Here it's like the internet came and all, but 90% of the people don't even use it. You'll find people my age that have never even used it (but considering seeing 13 year olds that are pregnant and don't plan on finishing even junior highschool because she plans on becomming a housewife when the baby is born being not so odd down here is a sign that learning how to play WoW isn't a top list life priority for a lot of people here).
However, people in my university are usually preppy rich kids, so seeing them fiddle with their palms and checking their e-mail on their iPhones is pretty normal. It's kind of interesting to see such totally different societies living together in some sort of harmony.
However, that doesn't mean that phrases that became famous on the internet don't become famous in the real world. There's a few youtube videos that have leaked into everyday conversations. "Me amarraron como puerco!!" (They tied me up like a pig!!) is a phrase you'll hear a lot. I felt so sad when the guy that said that phrase was killed a few weeks ago in a car crash. :(

I said "lol" a few days ago when I was amidst a conversation with some close friends, and suddenly we were all like, "..." and they were staring dumbfounded at me. I said it had come out almost mindlessly, and that the internet was starting to leave the computer with me.
I proceeded to go home after school that day, and wash my tongue with sanatizing, anti-internetspeak soap.

Oh God am I glad I'm done with high school and all that if THAT'S the case. That sounds horrible.
I could say the same. Glad I finished high school back in 02. Most people in high school were already annoying as hell, so if those already annoying people were going to start using memes and stuff in everyday conversation, then it would just multiply the annoyance level ten times.
But yea, back in high school, most people were retards. If someone was gonna get into a fight, people would be stupid and be rooting for it to happen and just laughing, instead of actually thinking seriously and trying to prevent it from happening, like school is some sort of circus. Then people just picking on other people in general. You can't get away with that kind of crap in college. Let alone that you won't see that kind of crap when going to college, since you aren't gonna meet those kind of trashy people at a school you actually have to pay to go to, not some cruddy public school where even the most low class, low income, and low intelligence beings can attend. People who go to college go there because they actually are there to get an education.
That was pretty much one of the reasons that I didn't start going to college at all until like three or four years after high school. My high school years were full of hard times and I just thought it was going to be the same crap over again with college. Boy was I wrong... Besides the some boring drawing here and there and having to wake up early, I'm loving it. For the first time ever I've even met a nice normal girl who is interested in me and I plan to ask her out Monday. Life is good now.

That's why I said it adds comedy to the whole thing. The fact that fighting game terminology works so well just makes anything twice as funny. For me, at least.

Was College really that different from highschool for you? I didn't see "That" much of a difference, the only difference was instead of "Making Fun" of the people that get made fun of those people where just ignored, there was just more to do "Outside" of school work...always parties to go to drinking to do...hardly anyone I know went to college for an "Actual" education...that just happened to be a side effect, the real reason most kids go to college is the parties.

To be honest, I've never really been much of a party person. Then again, I haven't really had much friends outside of people I talk to online since I've been out of high school. I also don't really care for alcohol. I've never drank any and I really don't plan to ever. I don't have anything against anybody who does like to drink a good beer, but I'm just not interested. I've seen how alcohol can affect the way people act when they get drunk and the few times I've seen the way somebody acts when they're drunk, it's been pretty retarded or annoying. It really makes me wonder why people seem to make such a big deal out of parties and beer. My sister threw some party like that without my parents permission while they were in California for like a week and I hated it. A bunch of loud idiotic people in my house, loud music playing, people leaving their urine all over the toilet seat and not cleaning it up, some idiot throwing up in the toilet, my sister's ugly fat friend coming in my room drunk and trying to get with me. I felt like just kicking these people out of the house. I was supposed to go to work the next morning, but I had to call out because I didn't get to sleep until 4 am, because my stupid sister didn't end the party until 2 am and acted like she wasn't going to clean up the house until next morning, even though it was a huge mess. It was an experience I'd never want to repeat. So to be honest, I really wouldn't be able to answer your question other than I do think college is a lot better than high school was.

I thought College was a lot better too....but that's because the parties were no longer at "so and so's parents house" and in dorms and frat houses...much less cleaning up to do, its a much more open enviornment then throwing one at your parents house or even your own house I'm finding out now that I own my own place.
I still go to college's even after I'm out just for parties on occasions, nothing beats a good party, btw your sister sounds like fun :P

I did 1 year of public school in the USA and hated it. From then on when I talk to any mexican who thinks America is the big cheese, I just tell them how sucky schools are up there and they shut up.
Mexican schools aren't like that. You pick on someone, you get suspension. I got a guy expelled 2 weeks before graduating HS just because he touched my legs inapropiately (course, the school board wasn't very pleased when he dressed up as a Taliban making fun of 9/11 a few weeks before either. I was the only American in the school, but still it was a joke of very poor taste. Never seen him again, doubt he entered college).
Hrm.. college. Because of the lack of bullying tolerance we have in schools here, the way people acted in HS and the first few semesters of college aren't very different. Still making a lot of noise in the hallways, laughing a lot and throwing paper planes. In my faculty the fresh crop are like that. Then wham! You see the students from 5th semester and up and everyone suddenly becomes serious and stuff. I now understand why my university built two buildings: one for the fresh crops and another for us veterans so that we don't have to put up with all of the noise the few times we're in campus.
Glad to see you're liking college. My case is different though. Since 90% of the students of my faculty (I bet the number is even less in the other faculties) don't work to pay their intuition, a lot of them don't study because they still live in this magical bubble that mommy and daddy pay for everything. Then internship comes and many of them suffer reality checks paying for bills for the first times in their lives.

I quite respect your desire not to drink. I'm not a party girl myself but I do like to drink at social reunions to become more talkative and seem less serious. With the kind of pressure I'm under (arriving home at 11 pm 3 days a week in hellish traffic isn't exactly fun), I really, really need to cool steam every now and then.
You don't have to drink to the point of barfing (in fact, every time I've gotten drunk I've never done any of those things and I've never had a hangover), but it's nice to drink 1 cuba to become more sociable and have a bit more fun instead of sitting in a back corner frowning over everything.

Or the people that were picked on in HS are the smartest students there is and then everyone wants to be on their good side so that they can improve their own sucky grades.

Big universities are party schools: come on, look at how many fraternities, sororities, and school clubs there are. Community College is like High school after graduating, really you're just there to take a class and then you leave without taking the time to really get to know anyone. Likewise. If I meet anybody in my classes that seems interesting enough to warrant my time, I'll do my part to get to know them. I don't need to go to a party to meet people. Truth be told, I hate loud crowds of people anyways, especially if alcohol is involved and it gets really out of hand. My idea of a good time might just be sitting back and chilling out in the nice peaceful quietness of my own home every so often to be honest.

They thought they were all hot ****, disrespected absolutely everyone, the majority of them were wannabe gangstas, and one even tried to pick a fight with a Senior. He must have had a death wish, lucky for him nothing happened, he would have gotten killed, or at least been put in a coma until everyone in his grade graduated.^_^

In my senior year, a sophomore tried to pick on me, so I just brushed him off and laughed at how pathetic he was being and walked away. That must have really pushed him over the edge, considering he tried to attack me in the lunchroom later that day, but the vice principal and the counselor were standing right there and they tackled him to the ground before he could get to me. They dragged him out of there and I never saw the guy again. Oddly nobody bothered to question me or anything. Yep... public schools are an infestation for the retarded. I once saw two girls get into a fight, and one of the girls was lying on the ground, while the other was kicking the poor girl's head into a locker. Jesus Christ...!
Speaking of freshmen, don't even get me started on the whole freshmen day thing. Lets have the freshmen leave first and then everyone else above them after, so the freshmen can run away before they get beat up. Why...? Because some moron created some stupid school tradition while he was having a bad drug addiction that obviously rendered him without the use of 95% of his brain? Again! Is school supposed to be a circus or a place to learn? I certainly learned how stupid people can be there if I was meant to learn something. So I guess when I was a freshmen, I might as well not even have been considered to be a human being to others.

High School is the best years of your life MY ***. Unless you're popular, athletic, and have rich parents (usually all connected to rich parents) high school absolutely sucks.
My sister had this one girl that hated her and she got mad at my sister and stuck a used condom in our mailbox. she even tied it to the inside of the mailbox so we couldn't get it out. We had to throw the damn thing away and had to get a new one.

If people are going to college primarily to party then they sure are wasting a lot of money.
I know many-a friend that dropped college either because they did not have the discipline or willpower to hack it, and ended up doing the same thing I am doing. I also know a few officers who went to and graduated from frat houses. Those types are generally the kind of leader that flashes his privates to another dude, then gives him a swift kick in the rear and calls him a "***." Like from the movie Waiting. Sigh

I was actually pretty proud of my not-nerdy friend today when I told her about a party that failed and she actually used "epic fail" to describe it. It was like watching the seed of nerd blossom! Fantastic, it was.

I only found out through wikipedia. And I will never see it. Actually there are videos of reaction on youtube that had US soldiers puking.
There was one video of a guy making his friend eat chocolate ice cream while watching it.
