I have friends with braces. They're annoying, but they won't ruin your life or anything

I've never had a root canal, but from what I've heard they sound way more painful than braces.

They do suck a lot though. Yes, you can eat chicken soft tacos. I eat everything I'm not supposed to and rarely break them at all, and the orthodontist does repairs for free anyway.

As for the pain, they hurt alot after adjustments, but otherwise aren't too bad most of the time.

I worked at an orthodontist and none of the patients were in incredible agony apart from the one who never sat still.

So sit still, that's the only advice I can give you.

It's not painful, it's just annoying. Brush your teeth as much as you can, and don't eat too much sugar, because root canals are terrible. I've had one, it's not fun at all.

I wore them for 3 or 4 years can't remember was so long ago.

they don't "Hurt" they are nagging, its nothing really until they get tightened, every time they tighten them it is like a dull pain that is always there for a while till you get used to it, then its time to tighten them again :P

Friends can easily ruin your life, I know, from experience.

Braces, luckily, can not.

Braces only hurt when they put the glue on and take it off. At other times I had no discomfort. :)

there is a dull pain when they Tighten them, or there "should" be at least...it is kind of pulling on your -->teeths<-- to move them into the right position.

doesn't really "Hurt" more like its "Sore" for a while.

THey may hurt, but they will benefit you in the future. I would think kids don't make fun of braces anymore since they have become so common. and if they do, push them into the girls/boys bathroom/ in front of a bus

Change that to sore then :)
Personally the tight feeling didn't annoy me whatsoever.

looking at her Profile it says she's 25, at 25 at least for me, it was extremely rare to be made fun of by people I didn't already know (as in my friends...and friends make fun of each other that's nothing new and nothing to get angry about)

PS: and it says her favorite Video Game is Shinning Tears which is just plain awesome...I have been playing that On my PS3 because it beats the pants off of an game out during the current generation of consoles imho :P

I consider Brases to be like getting glasses except they aren't always permanent, basically it is like people get use to them and you hardly even notice them at all untill they need to tighten them.

I've had braces and i wear glasses so I had to put up with them both.

yeah, they'll make you sore. initially when they tighten them, it'll be a little bit painful, but then it goes away. they repeat above step for several years and then you have a new smile.

Hmm... The glue tasted like diseased flesh. Also, The pain seems to hit people differently. I had immense pain for a week and a half, where I could only eat soup. In the end, you get used to it though.

Depends on how hard they get tightened. After that, your teeth will hurt for a week or two and you may not be able to chew anything hard.

Personally, I've had mine put in 3 or 4 years ago (and they should come out in a few months -- thank god) and I haven't been able to chew into an apple since, as my teeth don't feel as strong as they used to and I can't chew anything too hard because of that.

Of course, I had to go through upper jaw lengthening and subsequent surgery as well as regular change of the metal wire they put on braces. To top it off, my teeth do not touch near the back row, so I had to use elastics for a year to bring them together (and now that they're gone, my teeth have slowly gone back to their original position...) as well as elastics on the braces themselves to bring my teeth closer to each other. Oh, the pain!

So yes, they hurt, hurt and hurt some more, but it all depends on what kind of treatment you have to go through. :P

well whats worst root canal or braces? i had a root canal once i could stand it but if braces are like root canals maybe i could stand them :P

Never had a root canal...Yup, my dental hygiene is just on point like that. :P Not really, but the tightening for me... Jebus Christ, it was, like, it was like something unpleasant or something like that. :uhh: It hurt SOOOO bad, but the pain only lasted two days. And, eating... Really, if you can't savour your food what meaning does Life hold?! *Crazy*

My mom says that my eldest sister became so Crackhead Skinny (well, she didn't say, "Crackhead Skinny") whilst she was in braces. Ha, that pansy. An hour after my tightenings, I was eating caramel apples and everything, even with the excruciating pain...And, that very same apple was still there at my next tightening, stick and all. *Nods head* "Why don't you believe me?!! I tell you I haven't been eating anything crunchy or sticky...Also, I think you missed a seed back there...."

So, yes, it's painful. More painful than having a bikini wax whilst giving birth! ...Or, so I've heard... :shifty: :uhh: *Mental Image, Cringe* Think about that...are straight teeth really worth it?!! I mean, some dudes are just attracted to a woman who can eat an apple through a fence (Hmm, who did I steal that from?).

Shenanigans Aside, Good Luck, ol' chap! :)

If you've survived one root canal, then you're a better person for it. I've never had to get one of those but I would dread it nonetheless.

So, then you've had a root canal and are about to get braces soon? There's really nothing to be afraid of regarding braces. At times, they will be minor or major (depending on your perspective) inconveniences in your life. You may get some looks but it is a common practice nowadays for people to get braces while they are older. I myself had them when I was in HS and it was an interesting experience.

My situation was a little different. They had to pull a tooth or two in order to make room in my mouth. I don't remember if my wisdom teeth were done at the same time....

But anyway, it is not as bad as you would think it to be. They glue the pieces on each tooth and then connect them with the wires or whatever they use. Some people get to choose their own colors but i didn't have such an option. When all connected, you will feel a strain on each and every tooth but it is temporary as they will get used to it and it will be like normal. You may have to wear small rubber bands at various times throughout your ordeal...and that is to assist in the shifting of the teeth.

What was most painful for me was when they tightened the wiring at certain times...it hurt to the point where I could not eat solid foods right away. But your teeth got used to the shift and it was business as usual.

*But I remember one time. Everyone was eating pizza afterwards and I could not partake for my mouth screamed with ill-fated torture. Mind you, I definitely tried but in the end you just have to wait.

Taking them may or may not be such a big deal. They use a strong glue and they pretty much need to pry the braces off each tooth. Let's hope your orthodontist has good skills.

Then after that, you must wear something called a retainer every night. It is almost like a mouthpiece that maintains the straightness of your teeth (I might be getting a little too ahead at this point). It is fashioned from a molding that they take of your mouth right after the braces come out.

In order to maintain your new smile and to substantiate the amount of time (a couple of years at least) and money that was spent for everything, it is vital that you wear your retainer regularly. When you don't, your teeth WILL shift out of place, nullifying your experience.

**I know because there was a point where I took break from wearing them and then they didn't fit anymore!

And don't lose the retainer for it is at least a couple hundred dollars (what I remember it to be but the price could have changed...up or down I do not know).

Take heart in the fact that there is a goal you are trying to reach and just roll with the punches.

Later.

I'm wearing braces now and have been using them for about a year and a half.

I got them because I had serious migraines (but can't complain about the aesthetics of having nice teeth now).

I had a really bad time when I first got them because my teeth were too tight (I had 4 teeth removed and you don't want to know how painful getting the first two removed was). I was an extraordinarily difficult case, so chances are you won't have such a bad time.

I usually don't notice them (but I did have to change my teeths' brushing style to really clean them) and yes, you do feel discomfort when they pull a new wure in there. I've rarely had the pain lasting more than a day or 2 and you can just take some advil which fixes the problem.

I do break the brackets a lot though. >_> And I do have to avoid eating some things. I'd love to eat amaranto bars (a kind of mexican candy), but I can't because the brackets would fall and it's a pain to slice the bars into bit sizes.

My dentist is a really nice person (even though I think she's a bit obsessive about oogling my green eyes) which is a plus. Plus she doesn't charge me a lot of $$.

Chibiyume is 25???

I've never had braces, but I have had dental surgery(had abscess buildup). My mouth was swollen up like a chipmunks for days. And that mofo bled like a ***** too.

So I feel for you pretty much. :) But I'm sure you'll be fine.

I've never had braces so I don't know. I hear though that your teeth will go back to the way they were before if you don't wear a retainer the rest of your life. I have a friend that had braces, and his teeth aren't straight anymore like they were when he first got the braces removed years ago.

^Did you have one of those deep scale cleanings or whatever its called? I had to do that a few years ago.

Oh yeah, they seem green to me (more like this turquoishish-greyish with yellow in the middle kind of green). I do get stared a lot (guess non brown eyes in a country where most people have brown eyes do stand out a lot).

Thanks to a retarded orthodontist, I was stuck with braces for almost 8 years ><

They sucked, but weren't really all that bad, you get used to them after a while. Root canals on the other hand, suck immensely.

The extra money for better insurance will ensure that that will never happen again.

I had braces for several years and finally got them taken off a few years back. I feel kinda bad now though that I don't wear my retainer at all. I just couldn't stand having it in my mouth. When I first tried wearing it, it made my mouth really sore. Not to mention since you're supposed to keep your mouth clean while wearing it. Combine that with all the times I'd want to get something to eat or drink and then having to brush my teeth and all that, it was just too much for me to bother with. Really, the retainer was more annoying for me than the braces.

I really don't see the point of braces unless your teeth are like... DAMN! Other than that though, some minor crookedness really isn't that bad in my opinion.

I'm so glad I never had to get braces though, thank you genetics! Only thing I have to worry about is my wisdom teeth, but I take good care of my teeth so I doubt they'll ever get infected.

It wasn't so much of a shock that the retainer didn't fit. It is difficult to maintain the effects if you don't wear it. The retainer is necessary but I agree that it was somewhat annoying.

There are a lot of people in sure need of braces. Crooked teeth or an over or under bit is another reason. Not just ..."DAMN!" It is a worthwhile investment...of time and money but does take a lot of patience and discipline to live with.

way back in the 7th grade i had braces for about 2 years. it wasn't all that bad tho, my girlfriend used to call me puffy cheeks because my cheeks were kinda swollen. the only thing that was the worst was when i had them removed. i swear it was like he was trying to yank my teeth out with a pair of pliers and a dental drill.

I've had my braces for well over 2yrs now. My orthodontist is a perfectionist, especially when it comes to fixing my overbite and midline alignment, so it looks like I will have them for at least another 8 months. The only time it hurts is for the few days after an adjustment which is done every 6wks to 2 months. My company health plan doesn't cover them (but will if my non-existent kids ever needed any), but I can claim them as a medical expense on my tax returns.
