What period of history are you doing your essay on? Or rather is there any particular part of that time that you need to write about?

Pre-20th century america was very prehistoric. There was lots of stuff that they don't have today. No nintendoes, no gameboys. Playstations. It was dark and rainy and sad. :(

There's the civil war, the opium war (and opium trade and its effects), Commander Perry opening up "the Japans", Discovery of the phone, the light bulb, beginning of electricity, steam power, industrialization, 10-12 hour work days with low pay, etc, etc, etc. And that's only covering a minuscule amount of what happened to make a difference in how life was back then.
Come now, I believe there is that place where you can rent books, completely for free too. All you need is an exclusive membership and a tolerance for walking short distances. Give it a shot, it's cool stuff.

Didn't it have those people who like to be traditionalists and ride buggies and horses? The really religious ones.

Yukimura proves his worth yet again.
Anyway. I actually don't think it was lazy, or not going for the obvious, of kenshinbebop to ask his question here. I think there are various ways of answering his question regarding what 19th century America depending on what some of our specialized knowledge may be. Let's say someone were very knowledgable in the politics (or insert some other subject) of the time they could steer him to more interesting sources right off the bat and give him a good place to start, or a means of narrowing his essay down.
Anyway. In the 1800's everything was black and white. Color hadn't been invented yet. Oh and people communicated with text in between their actions since sound wasn't incorporated yet either. Though there were recorded sounds, but people couldn't play them as they were speaking, for reasons that escape me.

Didn't America had 10,000x more freedom in those days then it has now?

The day is saved once again by Captain Obvious. Now, someone get my gun....
Go rent a book you lazy good-for-nothin'. What kind a person asks for source material for a school essay on an internet forum for anime? I hope your teacher is reading this right now and knocks your grade down by half for such a pathetic approach to LEARNING.
Jesus, no wonder this new generation is so goddamn retarded.

No, Hon -- I'd send them to you for essays in Paleontology.
Seeing dinosaurs up close and personal in their natural habitat would give you a lot to say about that subject. You'd be a godsend. :P
