I got to meet Paul Newman at the canceled Texas Motor Speedway CART race in 2000 before everyone packed up and left. I'll be posting my pics sometime this weekend.

He really was as nice as everyone said he was and made no bones about his passion for racing, although he had an interesting bet going on how long he could keep racing.

What was the bet?

What was the bet?

For every lap he took in a car, everyone that doubted him would have to donate $5 dollars to the Hole in the Wall camps. A lot of journalists ended up spending entire travel stipends and paychecks to cover the losses after his last race in 2005. As you can tell, I'm quite fond of his exploits in motorsport and I have a newfound respect for his ability as a driver.

Too bad, anyone know what kind of cancer he had? He was great in Road to Perdition and I would love to rent his old western films (they have some of those movies at my nearby Blockbusters, but nobody that I know likes westerns and I don't have the time to rent on Tuesdays when it's 50% off >_<).

I read the news on yahoo and thought it was interesting that they mention the famous actors he co-starred in and the kind of 15-minute-of-fame actors we have today. Would a famous actor that co-stars in a movie with Miley Cyrus get such respect in 50 years?

Cat on a Hot Tin RoofIt's funny that you list Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in your list, since that is actually the movie that causes people to think of him as a "Western" actor...
XD

Didja know that, up to the late 50s, he was primarily a TV actor?
Who knew?

Even though he wasn't of my era, R.I.P. to a great actor. He made some great movies and for that, he'll be remembered.

I was watching 'Cars' yesterday (which i think Paul had a role in), and remembered that with his illness, he would only have months to live.

Sad how irony turns out.

We'll miss you Paul.

Who will eat the 50 eggs now?

HUH?

Would a famous actor that co-stars in a movie with Miley Cyrus get such respect in 50 years? That sounds like a good read... Newsweek had a very interesting story about pretty much the same thing--but with A-list stars:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/50497/output/print

It's kinda true that one of the most famous and highest paid A-list actor of the 1940s, Betty Grable, is pretty much in obscurity due to her "lackluster" movies... Which leads to one of my favourite quotes, "Popularity is a product of publicity and longevity is a product of artistry"...

in Cool Hand Luke, he had to eat 50 Hard-boiled eggs to win a bet, thats what he's referring to

Which was referenced in Cowboy Bebop [Hard Luck Woman]...

Who knew?
^_^As did James Dean--he only made three movies and he's already an immortal icon...
