Is it appropriate? And should it be dictated in bussiness format?

I didn't use any. I felt it was inappropriate. Upon thinking about it, i regret not using any.

Honestly, it all boils down to how you feel about your job. If you're the type that takes it seriously, I wouldn't throw them into anything.
If you're like me on the other hand, and loathe the constant drudgery that comes along with being a corporate shill, throw them into everything you send out.

I think it's a bit too informal for a communication sent to a customer or for business communication in general.

Most of what you say is unspoken so any time you want to show someone what your feeling is probably fair. ;)

I don't send them, and I rarely need to email outside parties in my work environment, but I can say I've noticed getting quite a few of them in the past year or so.

If you're doing business with nine year old children, maybe. Anyone else, not so much.

I think it's depends on who is your target audience and your business field. If your target is young teen or such, maybe it's OK.

The only time I ever see them is in spam emails advertising hashish, viagra, or Polish women.

I find that women respond very well to smile emoticons. I was sent a business reply once and she let me know that she appreciated the job I had done.
But it may just depend on the individual or corporate culture.

Or African lotteries from made up monarchies.

I try not to use smiles because it seems like cruise control. Putting a wink at the end of a smarmy statemnt is the same as saying something smarmy, then putting a paragraph long DISCLAIMER: about how you didn't intend to offend him.
And that's just gay

This is an inherent contradiction. There is nothing businesslike about emoticons.

I find that you're making sexist assumptions as well as overusing bold type.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that...It was an example of something that happened to me.

You seem to have it all figured out.

Not necessarily...just speaking from my experience. Nice try at flaming kiddo.
The bold type stays.
