Hey guys!*twitch* I got a letter in the mail today. I was going to start school next week, HOWEVER, due to the fact that the stock market almost took a total swan dive on monday, the bank has decided to cover its *** a little and my student loan is gone. GONE. My school didn't take it out in time (my stuff somehow got lost in paperwork, even though I was told it was done!!!) and now I can't go there at all. Which means I'm over 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS SHORT!!!:ssj: Oddly enough I'm the only person in the school that this has happened to (so far).<_< So until I get another loan, which by the way means that the economy will have to improve, I'm not gonna be able to go. Plus there's gonna have to be an opening for me to get in (new students start every other month). Which means that I'm gonna have to wait till sometime NEXT YEAR!:$%&#!:
What the hell did I do to offend God? Did my dad do something that caused his firstborn son to be cursed? What, did he get in a bar fight with a couple Rastafarians before I was born and one of them turned out to be a voodoo high priest or witch doctor?!!?! TELL ME WHAT IN THE NAME OF **** DID I DO!?!:$%&#!: :ssj:
I am about half a nanosecond away from A. actually turning into the Hulk and going on an unbelievably destructive rampage, or B. turning into a serial killer that would make Jack the Ripper proud.
Haro!

Wait, what the hell? Are you absolutely certain that is the case? If so I might be screwed as well. Also what lender were you using?

Bank of America student loan. Don't panic though. They're only doing it a little. I'm just highly unlucky.
You live in NYC, so I assume you use Chase?

jeez, that sucks. what school? i can't believe they'd cancel your loan like that
Caster13
September 19th, 2008, 08:10 PM
Not saying the school (internet confidentiality). But I was worried they were going to cancel my loan ever since monday night when I heard what happened at Wall Street. The news said that because of a few companies going out of business and AIG in major hot water banks were going to stop giving out so many loans. Yet mine makes no ****ing sense at all. I even checked the next day with the school and they called the bank and it was fine.
Then I got the letter, made a couple phone called, and everything is gone. I'm gonna have to do more stuff tomorrow to try and get this back. And I'm playing a couple different lotteries for the hell of it. Until then I might end up getting another food related job until next year, even though I NEVER wanted to EVER have to work in a kitchen EVER AGAIN. However those are the only jobs that are plentiful right now, due to the economy.<_<

Why are you taking a loan anyway? You will spend 10 years after you graduate paying it off and be like my friends who do nothing but ***** about how they can't afford anything. Work during school, you are screwing yourself otherwise.

Wow, that is terrible. I'm just amazed that Bank of America can turn anyone away (for anything); especially considering that they are basically an American national bank, after swallowing both Countrywide and Merrill Lynch.
Are you sure it's not a filling error or something else that's really stupid?

30 grand short? For what was, I presume, a loan for one year of college? You're paying too much for... what? A name? You can get just as far ahead with hard work as you can with prestige.
Time to rethink. Go to a state college, work really hard, put yourself through school for your undergraduate work. By then, you'll be in a better position to decide what you want to do, and which school is the best choice to get you there.
Trust me, if you decide to get your Master's and/or PhD at Princeton, nobody's ever going to look back at where you got your undergrad degree. And since you only get out of college what you put into it, if you really apply yourself even at a second-rate college, you can get a first rate education nonetheless.
Sure, it's Plan B, and it temporarily sucks, but life has a way of working out. Don't stress. Figure out what you have to do to achieve your goals (even if that means working in food service for an extra year to build up the cash for state college), then do it.

hm, maybe. I hope so. Come Monday I'm storming down to one of the main banks in the Phoenix area and believe me I am NOT going to be nice about this.
And I forgot about Bank of America doing that. This really might be some sort of mistake. Either way this is absolute bullsh*t. I really hope the school is kind and accepts this if it's some sort of mistake. But if this doesn't get sorted out in time then I'm screwed anyway.
Wait, today's the 20th? Then I DO have some time.:D I have till the 29th.
Also, even though this is one year the school can set me up with a job with a really good company and I have more of a shot at that than any other school. Hey, it's better than spending 100 grand on regular college.
Also, I only had enough money to put $5,000 into it.

I hope it works out for you. My school's bursar was absolutely terrible for the first two years I was at college. They were contracting out some of their duties which led to poor service and a massive run around; I had holds placed on my status 3 times before the beginning of registration because they failed to process and input the necessary paperwork.
Oh well, I really did want to take that 300 level philosophy course my freshman year.

Hmmm this...
I was having a discussion with a guy in my graphic design Class. He tells me he doesn't want to work in a food shop the rest of his life, but at the same time his boss needs him there and considers his ethics more important that an education.
On the upside I can see the long hours this guy can pull out of his job, if he sticks around his raise could get him to something really interesting.
On the down side, he wont be able to go anywhere else he enjoys better without some degree.
My point is going for a degree to get into a career you're interested in is one thing. What you do in college while you're there is a whole different ball game.
A lot of people tell me put education before work, I understand where they're going but it's hard to keep a life outside College and still be able to make those good grades inside college too with everything else you're doing.
In my opinion, Keep your job, if it sucks and you don't get much out of it, Find another job but don't quit you're old one, in the mean time keep your education going find as much time out of work to study, and don't let other people take you away from it.
If you think Kitchen work sucks, grit your teeth and suck it up, don't give up a job for someone else while you're income is in the hole.

I don't have a job yet. I've been looking but I can't find one. You'd figure in a nice sized city like Phoenix there would be jobs but noooooo.
I wonder if there's some way to reverse bad luck.

Have you actually tried Applying to every fast food chain within a 20 mile radius? Come on there's got to be something looking for cheap labor.

This is pretty much my last resort. I'll try Subway or Quiznos or something. Not typical fact food, and I love sub sandwiches so it might work.
And yes I know I wouldn't be eating all of the sandwiches.

You're about as helpful as any given article on ED.
I'm in a $40,000 a year school because art school can leave you **** out of luck without networking. This college so far has been insurmountable in teaching me about the industry I plan to work in, plus there are tons of recruiters scheduled to come even starting next month (of course more important to to juniors and seniors, but it helps to be aware of what's around me starting now.)
Still had to take out a loan, but working two jobs is just something I have to consider in the near future. Both on campus and off.
There's also the Plus loan to consider as well, which is most helpful for the student. Consider talking to your school about emergency conditions? Or perhaps this year off may be helpful in some unforeseeable way?
My best to you.

They are not going to give a 40K a year job to a student with no work experience. I had to work 2 jobs when I went to school out of state. You are not entitled to money or an education you have to work for it. I swear kids these days.

I agree with this. I could have gone on a free ride thanks to affirmative action, but I wanted to actually make something of myself instead of asking for help.
Kenpachi, if you're actually serious about going to school, I suggest you look for either a cheaper school or looking into a vocational school instead of depending on a backbreaking student loan and worthless job placement.

yeah, no shame about going to a state school for undergrad. its all about where you do your graduate work now. like in ages passed, it used to be if you went to college or not. now college is basically a necessity if you want to thrive. the degree of thriving depends on where and how you do your graduate work.
ps. i gave up a 200k scholarship..

let's get a few things straight.
1. I tried a Plus loan. I got denied from that.
2. I know that I can't get a 40 grand a year job. the best I could hope to get is a job that pays $9 an hour.
3. I know that nothing is gonna get handed to me. I know that I have to work for what I want. Don't put me in the same category as people who think that they can get big houses and all types of expensive **** that they just saw on a Cribs marathon. That type of thinking is why so many people are in debt today.

So let me get this straight: you applied for a $30,000 loan and you don't even have a job?
Of course Bank of America is going to reject your loan application. It's not because of the stock market plunge; it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

September 20th, 2008, 08:20 PM
It was a ****ing student loan and I didn't have to start paying it back until 6 months after graduation. That was it. Nothing else. Not complicated at all. I was told everything was fine and that the loan was accepted by Bank of America itself several times, and I know I would have gotten a job somewhere well before I graduated. Just because I don't have a job at the moment doesn't mean ****. That's not how this type of thing works. I got screwed, and if I can't fix it in time then I have to sign up for starting at some time next year because of the waiting list.
I have no idea why you people are critisizing me so much. I didn't do anything to screw this up, and there's no good reason why this should have happened.

You are taking out a loan you will be paying off 4 years from now instead of manning up and working or getting scholarships. So yes we will criticize you as one of those people who take out loans without knowing what they are getting into and as the chief cause in our current credit crisis. Student loans should be abolished altogether.
Caster13
September 20th, 2008, 08:36 PM
No, I researched all of it. I know how much I would have had to pay back per month, and I knew what I was getting into. I didn't go into this blind, I'm not stupid. I signed papers showing that I acknowledged the loans and read them beforehand.
I know paying it back was going to suck and it would take a long time. But I accepted that.

You may need to bring this out of the public forum and take some time to talk it over with your family. You need to stop defending yourself and rethink a few things.
This may be a good fortune in disguise. I know people who went to a state school or community college and then transferred to a better school later on. The path to success is many and varied. Find the one that works for you.
