I don't like them more for the WTF aspect. Like, are they trying to be Ambercrombie and have their models not even wear their clothes to try and get and get sales? I know there are like at least four different ones I've seen.

Seriously, do you even disagree with me now you've seen it? :naughty:

That was on before every movie I ever saw until I was in my teens.

With regards to the Levi's jeans commercial... I don't even understand what you could find disturbing about it? Levi's jeans are worn by beautiful people who have sex with other beautiful people after taking off their Levi's jeans. The message of this commercial is clear, and... not surprising. Do we get a different type of advert in Europe, cause I've got to tell you, here it's not unusual to see a flash of leg, buttcheek or even (shock!) breast to reinforce the impression that beautiful women are somehow associated with this ________ which they are selling.

Trefellin

I don't like it one bit. The commercial isn't even about the overpriced jeans they are trying to sell. It's about two people doing things that should be done in private. It's like one of those car commercials that barely shows the car.

It reeks of obvious manipulation.

It reeks of obvious manipulation.
If I recall my basic marketing, commercials are supposed to manipulate the viewer. That is their whole purpose. A commercial is designed to cause a change (conscious or not) in the spending habits of the viewer, specifically beneficial to the product being advertised (whether the product is obviously mentioned or not). As long as:

1) the commercial leaves a favorable impression (of any kind) in the viewer's mind in relation to the product

2) that favorable impression predisposes the viewer to act favorably toward the product in the marketplace, and

3) the commercial does not open up the advertiser/sponsor/product to potential litigation (for false advertising, etc.)

... then the ad is, by definition, a good advertisement. I mean, it's also nice if an ad campaign manages to pay for itself too, but given that you can't really put a price tag on brand recognition, that's a bit less clear cut.

If I wanted to make this an effective campaign, I'd combine it with store ads showing the same models, normally clothed in jeans, purely G rating. It would be enough to remind the shopper of the ad (if they've seen it) even on an unconscious level, or if you're lucky, enough for a teen buying jeans to turn to his/her friend and say, "Oh, that's the model from that ad. You should've seen him/her, he/she's totally hot." That's enough to make an unconscious favorable association with the product, and influence sales.

Is that manipulation? You bet. Effective advertising. There's a reason that advertising majors take electives in economics and behavioral psychology.

Am I shocked by the ad? No. It takes a great deal more than that to shock me. I can't say I find the advertisement in any way compelling; however, I very much doubt I'm in the advertisement's target demographic.

In short: it's one more piece of marketing crap not worth noticing in the sea of marketing crap which pervades the airwaves. Heed it or ignore it, then move on.

Explain to me why a commercial should not?

I don't like being lead.

They should have a guy come on screen and tell me why I might need or want to buy their ****. What's so great about their product? After he lists why it's better than the competitors or how I might find it useful, I'd make a decision.

Or, they can make stupid commercial that says nothing about the product except, "we have nothing to say about this product so we just made a meaningless TV spot to catch the eye of mindless drones." That makes me not want to buy, or even have any association with, the product. That commercial says, "these are just regular jeans and we think you are stupid enough to care about them just because of our commercial."

Oh that's right. I stand corrected. THAT is the best commercial ever made.
Arguably, yes. It cost nothing to make, it became a viral ad in the sense that everyone complained about it at the watercooler, and it actually made viewers curious about the product, albeit in the sense of "What the **** are they talking about?!"

It didn't leave a favorable impression in the viewers' minds, but the ad's near complete saturation of the market meant that the product actually reached the Truly Ignorant Masses outside of the normal mainstream media outlets. And since they're the only ones stupid enough to buy something like Head On or believe that a topical analgesic is somehow effective, the advertisement helped sell a lot of product, even if that product was essentially a lightly scented anti-perspirant stick.

A lot of advertising companies and behavioral psychologists took note of just how effective the Head On ad was. A lot of political campaigns have also taken note of how effective it can be to bombard the general public with a simple, oft-repeated impression, whether that impression has any grounding in reality or not.

Manipulation by the media. Imagine that. Who'd'a thunkit?

WTF?!?!?!?!?!

What do you guys think "kia ora" is? Kia ora is a Maori language greeting, translating roughly to "be well". We use it in New Zealand for "gidday" or "hi".

Kia-Ora used to be a really popular orange flavour drink. You'll see at the start the boy receives a slug of Kia-Ora concentrate into his glass, and then fills it with water... wrung out of the Sun? The crows all then beg him for a taste, but it's too orangey for crows.

I never knew that it was a word in the Maori language, I always associated it with the drink you could buy in the cinema. You have to admit that "be well" is a good association for a drink. It implies that Kia-Ora is rich in vitamins and will enable you to "be well", if you've ever heard that term.

They should have a guy come on screen and tell me why I might need or want to buy their ****. What's so great about their product? After he lists why it's better than the competitors or how I might find it useful, I'd make a decision.
It would be nice, but I don't recall ever seeing a commercial like that. That's what reviews are for, whereas commercials for as long as I can remember just aim to associate the product with being cool, scoring with girls, and generally living the good life.

Considering how much he was probably paid to do the commercial, I bet he didn't really care. See, most people are just that; actors. Majority of the people who act gay on camera, usually aren't in RL.
I'm well aware of that... An actor playing a Nazi or a serial killer isn't really one in real life (or are they?!)...

Next time I get the chance to work with a model, I'll ask them how much they get paid... It's such a competitive business, clients really judge them by their looks from a few pictures (I've worked with an art director that picked this one female model based on a single picture alone)!... I wouldn't be surprised if they accept whatever they can get...

Levi's aren't all that great anyway. My favorite jeans have always been from old navy.
I wear Old Navy jeans for work 'cuz they're cheap and I don't care as much about them tearing...

I'm imagining the only one you're hitting is Palmela after watching the commercial.

Seba, I know you're more balanced than that, its just there seems to be a mentality on this forum, you act gay, you probably are. Commercials are hard to come by supposedly, since the producers have a strict view of what they want.

Old Navy Jeans tear after a while, but they're cheep, good, and snazzy. I need to go buy some once a sale comes along. I need me some good new jeans.

Like I said it's all in the script. Ideally an actor is just that, they really could care less about what their doing, it's their Job description to act.

Just like that MTV deal with Haro, who cares if MTV needs to shot in the ground, Haro has a client, client = $$$$ regardless of the job details.

Unfortunately the Internet is more or less like Real Life in that it's based off real world people's opinions. We get our cracks from the media, but it's not our job to think about what goes on behind the scenes, unless you actually work in that field and code switching is probably the last thing they're worried about.

I know that; which is why I said it. I don't even watch TV, so I don't give two ***** about the commercials really. I was more taken aback they had people who looked underage in them, since people are always so much on teen pregnancy, and they have stuff like this always on. Makes em' wanna do the sideways monster mash right?

Well considering, he got it a lot quicker too.

Anyway, to the OP; its a decent thread since its getting a lot of traffic, but really, if everyone made threads on commercials they hated, the forum would be nothing but spam. Commercials are stupid, and use layman techniques in order to sell crap to us. For men, they appeal to the fact that using their product will make women strip, have sex, misc. with you. Axe, Cell Phones, Mouthwash, Razors, clothes, you name it. You'll be hip and attractive. Men will want to be you, women will want to be with you.

For women, they attack our insecurities, saying that we're not attractive unless we have product _____. To make our hair more luxurious and vibrant, to make our curves more sensual and face more satisfying to look at. In short, so the opposite sex will want us, equaling us not being alone (since EVERY woman wants to get married and push out 2.5 children). It also tells us often to lower our standards, but thats really another discussion. Commercials suck, and what you should do when they come on is click the + button REALLY FAST to switch channels. That way, they can't use their subliminal fancy talk to get ya!

1. @ the url name. Priceless, and always funny everytime I hear it.

2. Axe the male body spray. Their commercials usually consist of naked women, men being cleaned by naked women, the gusto.

3. Dying alone is a pretty common fear. What they do is say 'Nobody will love you, unless you look like this. The way to look like this? Buy our product.' 'Female' targeted products thrive off that stuff.

The one where they do it in the black family's house? Yeah, I made a joke like "After you burn a cross in their yard, have sex on their bed!" with friends. It went over well.

Levi's look like every other pair of pants. Personally, I'd rather go to JC Penny. I'm a fan of No Boundaires too. Steve and Barry's ftw.

I'm at a loss for a way to get my message fully across.....

Maybe it's because Secret Life of the American Teenager is on TV constantly (my sister watches it) and I'm absolutely sick of anything that's even remotely connected even to the .000000000000000001 degree to teen pregnancy? Cause that's what the ad looked like for a second.

The subject matter of the show is very controversial. This will open up doors for the lead actress though.

That commercial had nothing to do with jeans!

Fine, here's my Levi's ad. They should use it, they'll sell buttloads of jeans. Genius!

Why do you concern yourself with this commercial? Do you consider it some sort of victory? You care that much about a 15 second TV spot? Maybe you're just not getting laid and the dude in the commercial is making out with that hot chick just got your panties all up in a bunch.
