View Full Version : Rick Rolling the MTV Europe Music Awards.

A small campaign has been started with the goal of Rick Rolling the MTV Europe Music Awards. They are taking votes and you can nominate whoever you want. I think it would be fairly humorous if this endeavor was successful. No, it would be more so, it would be an achievement, wouldn't it?

What do you think? Stupid? Worth a try? Or has this Rick Rolling business gotten old and we should just forget about it?

Edit: If you wanted to, here's where you can vote. (http://ema.mtv.co.uk/vote/#_) Just go to the bottom under nominate, choose "best act ever" and type in "Rick Astley."

And no, that link is not a Rickroll.

I voted for it, Rickrolling is still funny...but just needs to be used correctly....this would be an Epic rickrolled so it works.

Personally I still like being bel-aired better then anything else.

Anyway, I wonder seriously what Rick Astley must think of all of this?

You know, I went to a seaside resort this year and they had a load of Rick Astley on the local radio stations. Not just "Never Gonna Give You Up" but some of his other hits too. I don't think they were rickrolling, he's just never gone out of fashion there! -_-; Pretty much, they still think the 1980s is really really modern. (You still see tons of Elvis memorabilia too)

The local radio station here still plays Never Gonna Give You Up regularly as well.. it has forever not just since Rick Rolling came about. Although now everytime I hear it I crack up laughing.

I was but now I'm all about the beachboys.

Good Vibrations is like my favorite song ever, on the surface it's a pop song, but you can tell there's something... DEEPER DOWN that we don't know about . I bet if you played it backwards you'd hear Stan Lee telling you the meaning of life and the secret of death. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEGmd-3Gg-s)

Fun fact: Only the drummer actually knew how to surf. Brian Wilson was one helluva bass player though

Edit: I bet Rick Astley knows how to surf.

Actually I only really listen to 104.1 The Hawk-- Your Valley's Classic rock, be sure to tune in every night at 7 for "GET THE LED OUT," the Hawk's tribute to the greatest rock and roll band ever, LED ZEPPELIN (echo echo echo echo)

Interesting fact, when you drive into Berkely, California, the 104.1 wave length or whatever changes to a semi underground radio station entitled "104.1 the Berkley liberation front," they play some good folkish music on there. Go ahead, try it out if you ever come up here :)

I can get 104.1 The Hawk in the park but the reception usually sucks. About the only thing I can get clear is 103.3 KATT. Why do country music and religious stations have so much reach?

When I am in the valley I usually listen to 105.9 Jack FM but I am usually in Fresno.

But I hate her with a passion. Nothing but tons and tons of emotional women (sometimes men). She's basically Lifetime Radio.

Yeah, naff means a bit pants. It means... about the opposite to cool and trendy.

And you can only really make kippers out of herring. Otherwise it's "smoked sardine" or something.

Rick Astley has successfully been nominated. Hoorah! He is in the running for MTV's best act ever award, going up against Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2.

I truly do believe that Astley is the best act out of those. That tells you how I feel about mainstream music.

So, um, yeah.

http://www.mtv.co.uk/channel/mtvuk/news/458975-mtv-awards-emas-rick-astley-wins-best-act-ever

The fans show they’re ‘Never Gonna Give (Him) Up’…

The ultimate power of the audience vote was underlined when Rick Astley scooped Best Act Ever.

Rick was not available to attend the Awards.

In his absence the Award was picked up by Katy Perry and Perez Hilton who charmed the audience with a quick dance routine to his famous track Never Going To Give You Up.

In a statement Astley said: "I am honoured that my fans worked so hard to help me win Best Act Ever at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.

This is the first time I have been nominated for the EMAs and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me."

The awards, which feature ten categories voted for by viewers, garnered 79 million votes last year. This time Astley received more than 100 million, eclipsing the total votes received by every other winner combined.

“We've been well and truly Rickrolled,” said Richard Godfrey, a senior vice-president at MTV and executive producer of the awards. “We wanted to see who our audience would nominate and, given that we're in Liverpool, we thought it would be someone like the Beatles. But before the nominations were even announced he shot into the lead.”

Initially worried by Astley's inclusion, MTV set up a team to try to cut out block votes. It was to no avail.

A separate poll of MTV viewers on whether Astley's nomination should stand also fell victim to Rickrolling, attracting 20 million votes - 99.98 per cent of which were in favour of the star's presence. Mr Godfrey said: “People set up computer programs to bombard the website. They could be sitting in Croydon, but they made it look like they were voting from the Philippines. We put in all sorts of blocks because we wanted to be as fair as possible, but it made no difference.”

Mr Godfrey said that MTV had “begged” Astley to come and sent a delegation to his manager. He added: “[Rick] has become a lovely joke. People have a lot of affection for him. It shows he has the most active fans. This is a digital phenomenon.”

Astley, who has described the phenomenon as “very bizarre”, refused to attend the awards but thanked fans.

Shame he didn't go, but its obvious he's aware of the Rickrolling 'phenomenon' so it might have been kinda akward for him to go an accept an award that many people voted for based on mainly one song. (However awesome that one song may be.)
