This is the exact reason I don't get verified. All paypal has is my credit card. Paypal is only debited when I make a purchase, at which time my credit card is credited, the money goes to paypal, to the seller, and I get a receipt. No fuss, no muss, no stolen funds.

I've been using Paypal for 5 years & never had any problem. I don't use Credit or Debit card, I use my Savings account.

I've ran into ONE problem with Paypal in my 7+ years of using it. And it was basically their service being down for about a week. But no biggy.

I use debit. No problems here. Maybe you were dealing with shady people...?
EDIT - Btw, you have to be verified in order to purchase at some places.

I actually set up a new checking account for paypal purchases exclusively. That way I wouldn't have to worry about all my money being stolen in case fraud were to happen. Sure, I could still be over-drafted or some such, but I check my online banking almost daily to avoid problems.

I don't see how this can ever happen. When you shop using PayPal, the person you are dealing with gets nothing from you other than the email address you use for PayPal. They don't get the details of your bank account, debit or credit card, or whatever else you used as a funding source for PayPal. They get an email address. The only way they could used that to their advantage was if they could then extract the password from you via phishing or social engineering.
In my experience, PayPal themselves aren't too honest, though. They are inclined to freeze the account of someone who is making a lot of money and claim the profits for themselves. They will state that this is because they suspect fraud. They are indeed correct, a fraud has been perpetrated... by PayPal.

All very well and good... but you don't exactly have a choice on eBay. At least in the E.U. where they demand that PayPal always be the default payment option for auctions.

That's because they own them.

That actually happened to my sister, who was acting as a 'third party investor’ between a company overseas and buyers in America. Shady as it was, she helped them out -- using her Paypal account to collect payment, withdraw, then send the international money order to her 'employers', taking a cut for herself. Worked just fine for several months, until....
Paypal 'suspected fraudulant activities', froze the account, 'refunded' the last few customers she had (riiiiiight, although they never received such a payment), then had the gall to try and CHARGE HER to credit back her account that they emptied. As in, they supposedly refunded three thousand dollars, she needs to pay them three thousand as a result, kind of deal. <_<
Well, we knew right off what had really happened -- especially since we contacted each buyer and learned for ourselves no credit to their accounts had been made. No contact at all had been made (really, Paypal is not all that smart). We downright refused to pay Paypal a damn cent. They sent warning emails (with no return address, no 'reply to sender' listed) that legal action would be taken if she didn't pay by such and such date, yada yada yada. We laughed, deleted the emails, and tried our hardest to find ANY kind of contact number on their site......just to laugh where they could hear it.
Well, that was like.......two years ago now I think. Their abuse lasted for almost three months, until they just gave up. Suffice to say, no lawyers were ever necessary; Paypal was just trying to be a crafty bastard, pressuring a fool into giving them more money by scare tactics. Shame they didn't know how much of a ***** I was, and how cheap our family has been breed to be.
I still use them for convenience, but I am a lot smarter than my sister. At any given time, I never pay/receive/transfer/etc. more than $150 through that account. Even that is an extreme...more like $20 at a time, really. I don't even keep more than five bucks in my bank account (set up primarily for Paypal) during my shopping off-seasons. They don't give a damn about my measly little account, hahahaha.

Hey Mister Soluzar, you forgot to mention the times that they withdraw money from your bank account, sit on it for a few days, and then give it to the person you sent the money to. Even if it's not illegal, it's still dishonest.

It is very dishonest. They claim to have not received the money yet, even though my bank assure me that they already have it. It has become quite a regular thing. They generally hold on to it for about five days before admitting that they have it. I only didn't mention it because I assume it's a well-known thing for people who fund PayPal transactions with a checking account.
When I agree to make an payment from my checking acoung, PayPal give me an estimated date of completion. This is never even remotely accurate. It is usually off by at least those five days during which the money is apparently in limbo, and then a few extra days during which PayPal apparently spend their time fondling it or something.

Get someone to look into the missing money. Paypal don't like dealing with me now because I come down faster than a ton of bricks if they try any money that isn't supposed to be out. Eg "Fees" for things I never ordered.

I got around that by also supplying a 'backup fund' -- my ATM/Debit card. It only occupies the Paypay checking account, so no harm came of it. I don't even use the card for anything else just to make sure I can track my purchases.
With another funding source (particularly a 'credit card' of some sort ... even if said card is only Mastercard/Visa by default), the transfers are claimed 'instant'; within 24 hours at least. I've had it where I’ve sent payment, my bank account shows the withdrawal, and the seller concedes to receiving my money within the day.
If only they sent out my order within that day....<_<....
If you only use a checking account with no backup funding source -- I do believe you are subject to a standard waiting period of 5-10 days, as you would find with the regular use of checks. Even if the account shows activity, there is a grace period. Don't know why exactly, don't think it's right, but you'd hit the same wall if you were to just use a check. At least Paypal is deemed 'safe' because no information is shared between parties.

Get someone to look into the missing money.
If you're addressing me, there's no money missing... it just takes far longer than it ever should to get from me to the people I am buying from, on most occasions. Far longer than PayPal have informed me that it should. It usually gets there... about two weeks later.

I have been using paypal for years and have never once had missing money or bad transactions. Always been fast and simple for me. But you can find someone to complain about pretty much every service ever established. The people who i've seen having problems with PayPal are a small minority.
Also it's highly unlikely that someone stole your money. People always jump to the conclusion that 'someone hacked my account'. How much money was in your account? Was it enough to be worth stealing? How do you know you or someone else in your family didnt make any transactions and simple forget about it? There will be a record in your account page of any transactions.

Also, a good tip for Paypal users: Don't buy from everyone using Paypal. I only use it when necessary(i.e. eBay) and that's about it. Maybe you have a crappy firewall and someone did hack you. Who knows?

This has happened to me several times, some payments need to get cleared from a person and it takes more than 10 days to clear, anyway i have never had a problem i have been a customer since 1999 no problems.everyone every once in a while is going to have problems with some business.I have 8 credit cards set up with paypal and i have a large credit line from Paypal Buyer Credit i have multiple bank accounts linked with them and this is how i get verified. You can actually call them on the phone! and i have never had money taken out ,only sometimes it goes really slow. But still i get my money, i know paypal has to get a commission it's understandable they have to pay their employees. And just so everyone knows Payal is owned by Ebay, that's why you are required to use paypal most of the time with some exceptions.I have purchased computers from ebay through paypal and there was one problem with a seller on ebay sold me some laptop computers that were crap and might have been stolen.Thank god it was less than 30 days, i opened a complaint to paypal, i turned in the computers to them to deal with
they returned my money to the credit account, and including the shipping both ways.
Like i say everyone is going to have some problems, but the main thing to do is watch the account like a hawk, yes constantly for any small discrepancy contact paypal by phone, not by internet or email, they outsource their email and web services. On phone no a live person in america is there, i hope they are able to help you.

10 days to clear?-_-; Whenever I do a bank transfer it takes 3 or 4 days. If I'm sending money to my bank account it usually only takes 2 days.

breaking news on local 6 news: i made a mistake!
really i forgot to mention this happened for buyers who were not verified and had some problems before sorry if i confused you but it takes up to 10 days sorry to clear, sometimes 4 days, 1 or 2 times it took 10 days. by the way i mostly use my Paypal Buyer Credit,But i have almost 9 others signed up from visa credit, debit cards,to discover,to mastercard debit and credit. And all clear within a day or two. The only one is paypal buyer credit it takes 4 to 5 days for a charge to post. When i get my paycheck i usually pay by direct bank transfer from my local credit union and it posts 1.5 days later, so it's the fastest, paypal is safe if you know how to play hard-ball with them.
I have used several merchants newegg.com and others with paypal and i buy stuff online from them and the charges approved within 30 minutes really it does! i bought a computer part from newegg.com at 9:00am which is 7:00 pacific time, then i charged to my paypal buyer credit and within :30 minutes it was approved and posted to my account at 9:00am pacific time which in miami fl its 12:00 noon it's alot faster than a credit card, however i don't use it much now i use more of debit cards and not paypal only for ebay.
truly sorry if i confused you guys:naughty:
