He was a professional martial artist / UFC fighter and champion who decided to go camping in the Southern Californian desert, leaving messages on his blog saying that he was aiming to go so deep into the desert that if any of his equipment failed, he'd be dead.
...so they've found his corpse in the desert.

What a dumb way to die....At least die fighting a cracked-out barracuda over a woman's honor, like Reidar did.

That's pretty manly. Granted, it's dumb, but it's a lot more than what Reidar would have the balls to do.

He had a ton of heart, his last fight was with Kendall Grove and while he was getting beat up pretty badly he just kept coming.

I don't remember a lot of his fights though.

Well, that's bad news...
But it really isn't advisable to go out into the desert underprepared, and especially to underestimate the effects of such heat...sounds like the poor guy simply got heatstroke and was too far out in the boonies to get proper help...
What an awful way to go...

I'm not going to feel bad, he knew full well what he was doing and the risks. It's a shame, but life goes on.

"Come on, guys. It's really common down in southern California to go out to the off road recreation areas in the desert about an hour away from LA and San Diego. So my plan is to go out to the desert, do some camping, ride the motorcycle, and shoot some guns. Sounds like a lot of fun to me. A lot of people do it. This isn't a version of 'Into the Wild'." -Evan Tanner
Uh huh. So, erring in your calculations and running out of fuel before even reaching this treacherous wasteland - the dreaded "recreation area" - takes "balls". Not only is that despicably inappropriate for a tribute thread, but it's also a defeatist and wussy assertion.
Anyways, this is a man who sold all of his material possessions so that he could travel across the country. If he wasn't in any upper echelon of fighters, then he was, at least, always a willing competitor and an interesting person. He was just building up his record after a long hiatus, too.

For the record, I don't fully understand why this person dying in the desert is any more sad than, ya know, everyone else who goes out into the desert unprepared and dies(not that it's sad when that happens either).
I guess it'd make sense if they were in like a Star Wars movie or something. But UFC? Come on.

Your honest opinion is appreciated. You should have just entered with that instead of instigating an off topic argument by trolling. You haven't been here long enough to start any trouble.
There are UFC fans here but to some it just may not be a big deal.

You actually "laugh out loud" at that? You need to watch some real humor, like Bill Hicks.
I think you're trying to posit that post length is correlative with emotional implication, and that's how you're under the impression that my "pride", as you put it, was whittled. In that case, you're injecting way too much drama into the exchange. You made a remark, and, in jest, I counterpointed it with a statement by your own subject.
That's called "tongue-in-cheek", in the context of irony. Don't look so far into it that you start making assumptions of imaginary honor and other such nonsense; it's merely a funny contradiction.

I don't know what you're talking about. There's tons of fans that loved to watch his fights, he was a really great fighter. So it sucks we won't be able to see him fight anymore.
Whats not to understand?

Oh I see, so then you're just sad he won't be able to entertain you anymore, not that he lost his life. Okay. Well that does make a lot of sense then.

Okay then the degree to which someone entertains you determines whether or not you care if they live or die.
I like you. We should exchange Private Messages I feel we might have a lot in common. You go first though, I'm shy.

^Why do you keep dragging this on? Isn't it natural that when someone you admire dies you want to know about it, as opposed to when someone you don't care about or don't know dies? ... Weird....

It is natural, isn't it? Though really when you think about it, it's kind of messed up. Why should we care about people we don't actually know, but that entertain us, more than we do about people we don't know that don't entertain us? Seems kinda sick, doesn't it? Not that I'm any less guilty of it, but questioning myself would just be weird.
I guess I mistook an internet forum as a place where people are willing to have discussions, when it is quite obviously simply a memorial service for the dead.
Don't see why anyone got riled up or offended(especially on the internet), but I suppose I'll apologize(on the internet).
P.S: As for dragging it on; I'm sorry, was the thread made for just the topic post 'Hey this guy died', and then was supposed to not be posted in any further?

I don't think it's weird at all. I find it stranger that if a person's occupation is that of something you think of as "an entertainer" you then discount them as a person that it's ok to care about. You're saying it's wrong to care about someone's life if you have not met them, and I think that's far more "messed up".
Any human being ought to be allowed to care about the life and well-being of any other human being - it's an organic and very human quality. You can't fault someone for caring.
ZSYigadar
September 11th, 2008, 04:31 AM
You're saying it's wrong to care about someone's life if you have not met them
Quite incorrect, actually. I suggested that it may be wrong to care about someone you have not met's life because(this word is very important because it defines my argument, which is actually important in a discussion, to not gloss over key words in the other person's message) they entertain you over(another key word) those you have not met that either don't entertain you, or aren't in a position where they're able to do so.
See, you assume my position is that of "Don't ever care about those you havn't met", when it's not that at all. It's instead that people shouldn't put celebrities and/or entertainers over regular people when it comes to caring about their well being. So in disagreeing with my position you'd be stating "Celebrities are much better than regular people and are far more deserving of your care".
Of course I'm not saying that's your position - as I pointed out earlier in my post you simply completely misread my posts. Which, is fine. It's just the internet after all. =)
Finally someone willing to have a discussion instead of being offended by non-hateful comments as if they were curse words(which, there are none in any of my posts because I don't believe in flaming on the internet, it's actually quite silly).
Oh and by the way, as I said earlier I'm completely guilty of what my posts were against - I'm not putting myself above anyone or suggesting I don't do certain things that people shouldn't do. I'm merely questioning why we(as a collective, including myself and everyone else) do this.
Na mean?
tenshi_a
September 11th, 2008, 06:23 AM
Quite incorrect, actually.
Uh, no, really you're saying that a person should not feel any connection or warmth or empathy towards a person whom they see as "an entertainer" and I'm saying there's nothing wrong with that.
Go with your feelings - it's ok. Might not fit your logic, but that was just something you made to stir up argument on a tribute thread, wasn't it? :P
Levon and other people are not so concerned about other people who die in the same way in deserts because that's not what makes him feel a loss - it's the actual person who has died. He feels that the man contributed positively to his life, and the lives of others, and he cannot do that anymore. You just said that the positive contribution that a person makes to another person's life means nothing if that contribution is one of entertainment - it is equal to having never met the person, an anonymous person dying.
Bottom line is you just don't value people you see as "entertainers".
Allow people to peacefully leave tributes to people - they are doing no harm by doing so.
