The last olympic thread was like 9 years old so I thought I'd just make a new one, and because the olympics are too long for most people to pay attention to, I'll provide a short but sweet Prons commentary on it so you guys can just read this thread while having it on your TV or whatever.

Anyway, the olympic games don't actually open to tomorrow, 8/8/8 at 8 PM and 88 seconds, and China is pumped, and I mean pumped. Usually when the olympics comes to a country it's like "Crap, there will be nothing else on TV For a week" but China is all like "Hell yeah, finally something on Chinese TV beside the NEWS!"

But even though the olympics haven't even started yet, they already kicked off the soccer events. Here's my thoughts so far.

In women's soccer, North korea owned Nigeria. Which was a really weird matchup, I mean just the thought of North KOrea fighting Nigeria in anything. This was a fun match for me to watch because all those north korean women running around in shorts rolling all over the place getting dirty.

In men's soccer, I watched America ruin Japan's Olympic dreams. The weirdest part was when Japan tried to pull down an african american's soccer shorts, I know japan is excited about cultural differences and all, but no need to do that when the entire world is watching!

Did I mention the olympics are pretty boring without comercials? I watched it LIVE! with a live text commentary (and the commentator sure was smarmy, damn.) and man I missed the comercials.

And the commercials are all about how GE made this the most economical clean olympics ever, and I'm like Are we talking about the same Beijing?

Anyway today is the opening ceremony, and beijing will put on it's best beijing for the entire world to gawk at. :)

My dad told me New Zealand came equal with China in the women's soccer.

I'm not totally sure how the soccer scoring ranking thing works (Even wiki described it as "only makes sense to europeans")

But the US women's team lost so I guess they're out.

The mens team owned Japan, so I guess japan is out.

Maybe someone who knows soccer can explain what's going on.

It's also worth noticing the Chinese women soccer team owned Sweden.

As of this posting, the opening ceremony is going on, and I'm waiting for KCRA (Our local nbc affiliate) to show some damn footage.

So many Chinese people wanted to watch the program online, that the China Central TV blocked web video access to people outside Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

But believe me I tried anyway, I don't know what they used to block out foriegners but it was hardcore, I even had anime nation forum legend "Soluzar" help me out, but it didn't work.

So Prons couldn't watch the opening ceremony live like most of China is now.

Yes the opening ceremony was that big of a deal.

But there is good news, tonight NBC will be showing the opening ceremony. Tune in at around 7:30 PM (PST time, I think) and give it a look.

The sports itenerary for today includes:
Horse riding (from Hong Kong)
Badmiton men & women singles.
Fencing
Weight lifting
Handball
Cycling.

Assuming the weather is good, the morning of 8/8/08 was a hazy mother.

I just wish they would have broadcast it live here in america, and replayed it later in the day. I was hoping to see it live, guess there's not much I can do about that :)

I was listening to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, coverage of the Beijing Olympics. It was breakfast time here, but nearly 3pm there. The presenter (who is normally angry and annoying) wanted to stop people and interview them, but just about everyone was "No I can't talk now, I'm working!" and he was all "so am I! Please talk to me!" :'(

Eventually he got to talk to some people about what they do for a living. "I deliver Instanoodle!"

He tried baiting people, to get them to say something negative, but everyone was completely saying that everything is golden happiness opportunity hard-working joy.

Yeah, not much sports reporting was achieved... -_-; It was amusing, though. ^_^

Watching Tom Brokav talk about China is kind of XD.

While NBC is finally showing the opening ceremony, I'm watching a live stream of the Women's Air Gun Target Shooting event.

First of I'm surpirsed there's a chinese athlete here, as regular citizens can't own guns in China. Maybe airgunning is becoming a popular alternative. She sure is a hottie though.

Those russian can SHOOT, it's really impressive. Currently the Czech republic is in the lead, followed by Croatia and then Russia. These russian women with guns are real hotties too. How can america be in 5th? I thought all americans loved guns! XD

The Parade of nations is going on right now.

It's really nice except NBC had to explain where Malaysia was.

Anyway it's interesting to see everyone wearing their own colors and clothes. Some of 'em are pretty funny. Funny how when the Cayman Islands walks out it's like "TIME FOR COMERCIALS!"

The only problem is I don't think they showed the entire opening ceremony, I think they "trimmed down" the boring parts.

But still it was a really impressive show, it was even pretty touching. I was glad to watch it with the NBC commentary because a lot of the cultural bits would have been lost in translation.

But it was an extremly impressive opening ceremony, the part with the moving blocks was great, especially when you found out it wasn't a machine doing it, they literally had like a few hundred chinese people in boxes moving in motion.

There was also probably the world's bigest tai chi thing ever, and it sure was great.

If they replay it or something I sugegst you guys watch it, it was impressive.

Also I missed Women's Fencing because the opening ceremony was on tv at hte same time. I did watch some of it, and it was pretty interesting. I'll watch that again when they show it.

Japan has the oldest competitor, at 67 years old, he's riding in the horse riding. He went ot his first olympics in the 60s.

Chinese Taipei got a warm welcoming. But Hong kong made the crowd go wild.

So far the Gold medal count is
China 1
Czech 1
Everyone else none yet

The first gold mdeal won was by the Czech Republic in Women's air shooting. I can't figure out which gold medal china won yet, due to nbc's websitge kind of sucking

Kind of off topic

But it's kind of sad to see so many countries walking down the parade of nations while their country is having some kind of turmoil. The pakistan team looked kind of grim. I wonder if it effects the georgian teams at all.

But on the brighter side some of the comercials are kind of cute
Like the oreo comercial where the american girl and the chinese girl have a face making contest while eating oreos and the 3d birds building a nest out of coca cola straws.

AND the dolmation training a horse to get accepted for the competition with the Rocky theme

They reported on cycling by the Great Wall Of China on the radio just now. I'm not really paying attention to the sports, just what else is going on, haha. There's a rent-a-crowd there chanting "Jai-o! Jai-o!" in unison, which apparently is an encouragement chant literally meaning "add fuel". They asked some of the normal Chinese people watching what they thought and they said "It's really funny! XD They must have been practising for ages! XD It sounds like army songs! XD"

I love this. I'm not too bothered about sports but I just like listening to all this. ^_^

The Million Dollar Prons

Not really it's just what's on when I happen to be watching.

Speaking of men, I am pissed because China just got gold in the men's pistol firing event. China got gold, and then South korea got silver and north korea got bronze. America came in 4th and 5th.

HOw the hell can america lose at shooting WE LOVE GUNS?!

I also watched some of the judo stuff. American man beat Japanese man, which must be really embarassing for the Japanese, to lose at a sport they invented. Meanwhile a chinese woman lost to a japanese woman, that must be really embarassing for her. :(

I also watched Singapore and Belarus in badmitton but I didn't watch the end (instead I vouched to watch the shooting because that's a real prons sport :elvis: )

Some last thoughts about the opening ceremony that was like 10 hours but was really good:

It was 10 hours
But it was really good

How about that kid who helped Yao Ming carry the chinese flag? He survived the sichuan earthquake by crawling out of his demolished school building and brining two of his classmates to safety.

Sarah Brightman is either a weak singer or the audio technican needs to be fired. I couldn't understand a word she was singing it sounded more like a droning. I never listened to her before but I don't think this is the high point of her carrer.

She also had this "Lu Huang just cut the cheese" look on her face the entire time.

How about the flying chinese man lighting the torch?

I didn't hear her in this, but droning would be good for her. Sarah Brightman makes my ears bleed. We used to hear her a lot in the 1980s when she was married to Andrew Lloyd Webber and she was starring in the Phantom Of The Opera. He's a rich composer who writes musicals and no lyrics. You can never understand what she's singing, her speciality isn't getting the important lyrics of a song to the audience, her speciality is purely sonic warfare.

Oh and from the bits I saw of the opening ceremony (streamed on BBC news website, just listened to and occasionally glanced at...) it was amazing. Not sure why they were playing "Scotland The Brave" on bagpipes quite so much... I really don't like bagpipes... they're also a lot like Sarah Brightman...

I was all "oh wow! I want them to win!" when China came out, before remembering "oh wait, I'm supposed to be backing Great Britain..." -_-;

Women's basketball preliminaries, Spain and China had a really close game. I really thought spain was gonna catch up, the last two minutes were really exciting, but a Chinese free throw ended the SPanish women's dreams.

Now I'll be watching Badmition Singles. Because I'm not really into Sailing or rowing (Although Qingdao is a gorgeous city).

Bringing back the NBA on NBC theme was amazing. This is how I see most of the games going. Being highly competitive for the 1st quarter and them slowly pulling away in the 2nd. Although there won't be 40 point blowout when they start playing the better teams like Spain. I have a really good feeling this year. It's no longer just a bunch of all stars and feels like a real team sharing the ball whenever they can. I was impressed and Wade showing signs of the Wade of old coming off the bench certainly doesn't hurt one bit. The only concern thus far is the amount of 3 pointers missed outside of Michael Redd knocking a few down. They'll need to improve in order to win gold.

Ahh... ok. After a bit of investigating, it looks like they haven't changed the results over from the semifinals to the finals. The order of countries there is the results of the canoe/kayak at the end of the semi's. As a result, it's also making their medal tally inaccurate... they've got Togo with 1 gold medal.

Still, I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused by that. And at least we still have our bronze in the canoe :)

The problem isn't eating that much. Anyone can train to eat that much.

The problem is burning 12,000 calories a day. Not everyone can do that. Heck, I'm a cyclist, and I don't burn off 12,000 calories a day. I'd have to bike around...

<quick calculation>

Hahaha... I'd have to bike over 200 miles per day to bike off 12,000 calories. A daily double-century. Sure. I'd survive that. Hahaha....

How is that not gold medal worthy?

As if you weren't being an *** by saying "...how did the williams sisters lose to these no names?" They are hardly no names... just because you don't know them doesn't mean you should post about the situation to generally, as if none of us know who Li Nu is.

You don't know who li na is either because you spelled her name wrong.

no how about you dont resort to being an *** about that...if i havent heard if her, technically to me she is a no-name person

True in theory but if you don't know Li Na then you don't know much about tennis and therefore you don't have enough ground to be starting arguments in my damn thread now back of the bus you two.

Badminton isn't that bad, it's pretty popular around the world. Not so much in the United States, obviously, but elsewhere it's liked. I actually enjoy watching it.

Yeah, that's one of the main things I love about the Olympics, seeing all the stuff that they don't air too often on TV, and everything is on such a big stage. It's good fun.

Anyway, Phelps winning his 7th gold in with only 0.01 seconds to spare was amazing. I thought he was untouchable, but holy crap he almost got showed up.

His last race is another relay, right? Those are always dangerous but I think I heard the Americans are the favorites for it (and they already won one where they were against the odds [French]), so it sounds good for him to make history.

Maybe I should get to bed now so I can finally wake up by 10am to see some USA basketball for once... I've missed all the games so far. I really wanted to see USA vs. China since I heard it has great atmosphere, but I missed that too.
