seriously, screw the poor judging. Nastia gets shafted out of a gold medal. such a convoluted tie-breaker system. i seriously ****ing hate how judges, (even though none of the judges were Chinese or American) somehow always score the US gymnasts lower.

[yawn]

I woke up this morning to breakfast radio telling me that we've won a gold medal in "laser sailing", and everyone was all woo! yay! and everything. And you had people texting in saying "I have never heard of laser sailing or watched it before but I'm in tears. This is fantastic!"

And yeah, well done him!

But I also think... to some of the people watching, it's a bit sad that they don't care about a sport unless we're winning medals in it - only really caring about the medals.

It's a bit like... when people buy and play Xbox 360 games they don't like just because they read on a website that it's easy to gain achievements. (yeah, I'm a bit obsessed with my 360 at the moment. But those websites that list games in order of how easy it is to gain achievements? Hmm, I think they kind of lost sight of why they play games... or maybe it's just me who doesn't gauge enjoyment and interest against being able to show off your trophies...)

Women's Pole Vaulting Russia set the world record! America wins silver.

Right now, Men's 105 killogram weight lifting finals are going on. I'll post results as soon as I see who wins It's a really fierce match, with a lot of great come backs. Russia may have won with a 550 pound lift! Latvia ALMOST had it, but they got a no lift :(

Germany just made a hella come back and snatched gold from Russia :O Germany is brining home Gold!

IN about an hour the trampolene finale will be on!

Synchronized Swimming Duet Finals are going on, and Russia performed a gold medal swim right there, but CAnada has it going on :O I have no idea how this is scored but I'll let you guys know who wins. I thought canada did great but it seems the judges don't agree with prons, they are currently in rank six, while america is in rank four

The russians have won gold in Women's SYnchronized swimming duet.

Tae kwon Do Mens 58kg and womens 48kg A chinese woman just beat a Taiwanese woman! :) China will be competing for the gold. And then Thailand beat Venneseula, so Vennesuala has beeen knocked out of the running for the women's bronze

IN the mens portion, Mexico beat Thailand to advance!

And then the domican republic beats spain!

nd now Kenya VS Sweden in womens is going on.

It would appear as if China wins gold@

Women's soccer final germany will be brining home bronze, and the match between america and brazil is happening now!

Wow. That Marta is a female version of Ronaldinho. Watching her play is awesome.

Anyway, I have to say, if the US wins, it'll be one of the most undeserved victories I've ever seen. Brazil completely dominated every square inch of this match, and the US was lucky to not have conceded at least two goals. But this sport has always had an awful lot to do with luck.

China's women's volleyball team just lost to Brazil in the semi-final, 3 sets to none.

I was actually surprised to see China playing so terribly. Usually, they are very smart and in this match, there were a lot of foolish mistakes, especially in the setting and hitting.

Well, good luck to Brazil. They face the US in the final.

Thanks for clearing that up, Plough. :)

Right now in Tae Kwon Do China and Nepal are fighting. China is winning 6-2. I don't know how the tae kwon do torunament works, so I can't tell how far we are from gold medal or what. The commentator text THING said USA was going to fight AZE for bronze though.

China wins 6-2. Apparnelty they're going to bronze too? TKD tournaments sure don't make much sense to me. BUt whatever :P

I guess Croatia is brinig home bronze in women's tae kwon do 67 kg, sadly I won't be able to catch the end of this event, because it's women ping pong time. Zhang Yin Ing can ping my pong any day

Women's ping pong (singles) in the bronze match it's China VS Singapore. 2-1 China. :)

Update: It's 2-2 right now for the bronze :)

Update 2: 3-2 China in the lead!

Update: China beats singapore for the bronze! This means that China will win gold silver and bronze in Table TEnnis!

The final events today were:

Hungary winning gold in water polo
China Kazakstan(sic) and Itally winning golds in boxing
France winning gold in handball

The final medal count:

Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
USA 36 38 36 110
CHN 51 21 28 100
RUS 23 21 28 72
GBR 19 13 15 47
AUS 14 15 17 46

The olympics are officially over, and here's the official Prons recap.

The road to the olympics, aka drama lama

- It was obvious right away that Beijing wanted to use this as a chance to do some urban renewel. Contrary to the "evil chinese kicking people out of hteir homes" rumours, most of the homes they got rid of were ancient and had no electricity anyway.

- The torch relay protests sure made France look like douches, attacking a woman in a wheel chair. It's a pitty protestors couldn't be more mature, and now torch relays will be "scaled back."

- This was probably one of the most hyped events ever. I started talking to Chinese people at the end of 2006 or so, and since then they've been advertising it like it was happening next week.

The opening ceremony.

- And a kazillion years of hype all led to this one night. Everyone in china got to take off early and watch it.

- The event was simply spectacular, but it was kind of easy to get lost without some sort of commentary.

- There's big controversy over the lyp syncing girl and the CG fireworks, but I think the most important part were the human gymnasts, that was all real.

- The parade of nations was good as always, and the torch lighting ceremony was great.

- NBCs narrating of the parade of nations was a little smarmy, but that's to be expected.

- Sarah Brightman looked really uncomfortable. I think 10 years from now when people look back on her carrer, the olympics won't be the first thing on her list of acomplishments

- The lighting of the torhc was cool.

The games (no particular order)

- USA lost most of the shooting events, what the heck. But at least we did win gold in Trap and skeet.

- Every archery event was incredible and I think it's gonna be everyone's new favorite olympic sport for a while.

- Superplough, everyone, rally behind me, Phelps is aiming for 2012!!

- Bolt's name is FAST.

- Weight lifting was exciting , feel sorry for that Hungarian who broke his elbow.

- Table Tennis was fun but it's not like the ending was unexpected.

- American women won soccer, because it's not just a europe sport!

- Japan shocked the world by defeating america in soft ball.

- Beach Volleyball, hell yeah.

- Those american girls sure can gymnast.

- Canoe\Kyak was more interesting than I expected.

- Tae Kwon do was fun even though I can't figure out how the tournament works. The most memorable part though was the refferee getting face kicked.

- Trampoline was an incredible event to watch even though it didn't get a whole ton of air time\props.

- Fencing? Not bad.

Closing Ceremony

- Jacky Chan singing.

- I'd say the performance part was just as impressive as the opening.

- Jimmy Page playing Whole Lotta Love ontop of a double decker bus was great,

- British people are weird.

- Seeing an old chinese man wave the flag was funny.

The future

- I wonder if we'll ever see the Birds Nest that full again.

- Phelps in 2012!

- Here's hoping Chigao wins the bid for 2016, in which case Prons may be able to attend personally ;)

Anyway, that's it guys. I must say it's really impressive that NBC stremaed most of this stuff live on their website. Technology really is a miracle and I was so glad I was able to watch the event I've been hearing about for three years live and in action.

It also looked great on HDTV, it was like being right there in Beijing.

I don't really remember any of the previous olympics, but London will have to try really hard to come close to this one. Lots of broken records, lots of firsts, lots of lasts, and china really came through as hosts
