Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.
He will be missed.

You know, Hitler, Stalin, the pillows, Abraham, Bush...
Everyone but this guy, it seems.

Hara, I was going to let the mods combine our threads, but ok.
And Tidusauron, you need to be schooled in pop culture.

They don't teach in school remember? They condition for minimum ability and drone-like behavior.
Goodbye Rufus, see you at the Circle K in the sky. :)

I'm so depressed right now. He was such a great guy, both on stage and off.
He will surely be missed.
First Tim Russert, now this. I can't take much more.

Doesn't seem like my kind of guy. I don't listen to much comedy anyways...
I hardly knew of Tim Russert either, but I had at least heard of him.
Anyways, RIP dood.

Wow, I thought he must have become immortal already.... yet another instance where I'm looking at an obituary and was shocked the person it's about was able to die...

It feels like the basic source of a huge amount of modern humour just died. I mean, you look at so many people who are trying to be funny... comedians and regular folk, and what they are saying owes some kind of a debt to Carlin. It's not like they copied his stuff completely, but often they are walking a different path over ground that he was the first to cover.

Somehow I see Dane Cook making another crappy special because of this.

RIP, may you make everyone in heaven have a Laughing Riot, George.
IIRC, Carlin was responsible for 7 words being banned on tv. (no censor bypassing here)

I was introduced to him in Jr High with Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Every time I saw his standup I'd think of Rufus.

I'm sure he'd have something acerbic to say in response to the outpourings of sorrow that are coming out everywhere, but it's definitely a loss to more than one generation. I first heard him in high school when listening to "A Place for My Stuff" LPs borrowed from a friend's dad.
Anybody follow the comedy circuit below the A-listers? Is there anybody out there that has a similar schtick, even if they can't hold a candle to George- or was he a giant to the point where nobody even tried to emulate him? Steven Wright was kind of an "analytical" comedian, but he had the deadpan thing going instead of being a curmudgeon... but he seemed to be a late 80s/ early 90s hit..

R.I.P. Carlin you crazy son of a *****.
Seriously though, I wish it was some one else besides him. I wanted to see one of his shows soon. :'(

Your post just reminded me of how all the good comedians keep dieing and we're still stuck with plenty of ones that are complete crap.

I just found out about this while on Youtube trying to watch some George Carlin comedy videos ironically. And I see alot of videos of the announcement that he has just died. All I can say that this is a big blow for us all, since he knew whats actually going around the world and the USA and making fun of it.

I really just don't have words for this one. This is kind of like hearing that Richard Pryor died, except... deeper.

Stephen Wright and Gallagher both have equally cerebral routines, but they're not in the same league. Richard Pryor was obviously an equal, but his act was more grounded in reality than Carlin's, which always included word/thoughtplay and philosophizing. The only comedian to whom I can really compare Carlin would be Lenny Bruce, maybe? Or to a lesser extent, Lewis Black?
I remember seeing Carlin's act live. I'm glad I did.

The only Carlin esque comedian that comes to mind is Lewis Black and he is very hit and miss with his comedy.

Reminds me of an old line from King of the Hill which had Bobby telling his father that he didn't want to do drugs, because he "wanted to be the first chubby comedian to live to age 40" (referencing Belushi, Candy, Farley), or something like that.
Stephen Wright and Gallagher both have equally cerebral routines
I'll have to look into Gallagher again, because all I remember from him is the Sludge-O-Matic. I still get a grin out of Wright's "I Have a Pony" album, and remember the "Terrier Carrier" (some type of adjustable bracket with a handle on top and a cup on one end for his nose, and a screw-in plug for his rectum on the other) from one of his live specials.

One thing that brightened my day was the news report that I saw that aired the '7 dirty words' act and it just went "And all I could think of were beep beep beep beep beep beep and beep".
Don't know why, but it really made me smile.

I found out this morning and it just sort of ruined my day. If it weren't for George Carlin I wouldn't have realized all the nonsense there was in society at such an early age. He was the type of person that would point and laugh at the guys that took themselves too seriously or were dragging America through the crapper. His commentary was perhaps funniest because it was just so true. I remember growing up, say when I was about 3 or 4 and my dad would watch the HBO specials. I remember my dad would laugh out loud (which did not happen often at that time) and I'd get about half of the routine. The idea of further understanding his comedy inspired me to read a lot as a kid and further be able to get it. I also remember going with my dad buying Brain Droppings the day it came out. So yeah I was quite hurt when I heard about it this morning. He was the friggin' Conductor!

Yes, if you lived in a bubble or were a missionary in the jungle than you might have a reason not to know him.
RIP Rufus. :(

My mom told me this morning, and I had to ask her over 5 times if she really just said, "George Carlin died." :( Are you sure? George Carlin? Mr. Conductor?
He'll be missed. I loved his acts (as well as Shining Time Station). XD

Rest in peace, George Carlin.
O humorist,
O genius,
O breaker of new ground, you
were more than just a comedian,
more than just a funny man.
You were an artist of the highest order.
"****-piss-****-****-**********-mother****er-tits."
That was your famous line.
And for this the cops arrested you.
Bastards!
Jon Ive says he never
found you funny.
A bit unkind of him, I think.
But then again, he's British.
And they have a weird sense of humor.
Fawlty Towers? Monty Python?
I'm sorry but I just don't get it.
Anyway.
Sleep easy, George Carlin.
If we ever do another "Think Different"
ad campaign, I promise
you will be in it.
But not your dirty words.
Sorry.

I was listening to Coast to Coast AM last night and they played an interview that Art Bell did with Carlin in 1999. He had a very interesting and sober view of the world.
