So, last year I got a two year world Gym pass. In which I was told I could cancel at any time, and the contract stated so.

Being unaware that this business likes to rob you, I hastily signed said contract.

In two months I will be married. I cannot afford this Gym pass if I want to still be somewhat entertained. So I go to cancel the account, and they tell me no. That's right, the same guy that signed me up and said that I could cancel at any time, told me no. The sad part is he even remembered that he signed me up as a college student even though I wasn't one, to get the discount.

I even took in my contract where it says I can cancel at any time and they still won't let me. They circle some part that has to do with the opposite contract I have.

TLDR, what the hell should I do about World Gym not letting me cancel my account. inb4 an hero.

Challenge the gym owner to a bout of one on one combat. If you win, you go free. If you lose... Satan gets your soul?

I'm gonna go with this. Otherwise I dunno, sounds like some weird stuff is going on.

hmmm Usually if the Gym takes money out of your bank account directly, then you're pretty much screwed from life, even if you give them a 1 months notice to quit. They want your money and they wont let it go without a fight.

Withdraw money from the account they're taking it from and refuse to pay. If they are charging it to a credit card contest the charges. Cite the portion of the contract that says you can cancel at any time and hold them liable for breach of contract.

LOL have fun in court doing that, they will hunt you down till there's nothing left.

If that happens prepare to get a really good Lawyer.

I nominate Reidar.

I have googled complaints about World Gym and apparently everyone has had this problem. Some people have been sent to collection agencies and had lawsuits filed against them. But there must be something going on, as the contract clearly states you can cancel it.

I just read a copy of their standard contract online. It states (boldface mine):

If you have a monthly membership, you may

terminate it at any time upon (1) written notice to Brown Recker LLC DBA World Gym and

(2) return of your membership ID card when your membership ends. Notice of termination

must be received at least thirty (30) business days before your EFT bill date
My immediate questions for you are:

1) Do you have a monthly membership (i.e.: one that renews monthly), or was this "two year membership" you mention part of a package deal?

2) If you do have a monthly membership, then have you notified them in writing of your cencellation? Do you have documentation to that effect?

If your answers are Yes and No, respectively, then you just haven't followed their cancellation procedure yet.

Now, if you have a "two year deal" contract that works differently than a Monthly membership, then... do you have a copy of that contract handy? I can take a look. If you can find a link to it, that'd be great. Otherwise... I dunno... PDF?

That's right, the same guy that signed me up and said that I could cancel at any time, told me no. The sad part is he even remembered that he signed me up as a college student even though I wasn't one, to get the discount.
Unfortunately, the rule here is "not documented, didn't happen". if you take it up with his manager or the franchise owner and they take his word over yours, then... that's that, really.

I even took in my contract where it says I can cancel at any time and they still won't let me. They circle some part that has to do with the opposite contract I have.
What's that bit say about the opposite contract? I'm thinking that it says something like "to get the two-year discounted rate, you can't cancel at any time, or if you do, you pay a penalty." Much like a cell phone contract. That's my guess. Am I right?

TLDR, what the hell should I do about World Gym not letting me cancel my account. inb4 an hero.
You should act within the constraints of your contract. It may give you an out, if you don't outright violate it.

Of course, their contract does state that they can terminate it at any time, if you... say... don't follow their dress code or are disruptive. You could certainly take advantage of that, if you don't care about ever having a membership there again. ^_^

My guess is that the salesman who sold you the membership gets a commission for the "large, non-cancellable" membership packages, which was why he was so eager to overlook the college student thing.

I will have to check. I pay monthly, but I do have a two year contract. I just assumed they were the same for some reason. It was the only option he gave me when I signed up.(I originally planned for a pre payed contract.)

2) If you do have a monthly membership, then have you notified them in writing of your cencellation? Do you have documentation to that

I guess I should do that. Thanks.

I had it but I just recently packed everything to move. So I hope I didn't throw it away or I'm SOL. I just gave up all hope, as this is the first time in a few months I've even talked about it with anyone. :\ Maybe I'll look into the PDF.

On my contract it said something about "If you have a pre paid contract you cannot cancel your contract.". In which I corrected them and they repeatedly argue with me.

Do you think they would call the cops on me if I did that? XD

I'm leaning on this. As lately I've heard a ton of complaints about the gym in this town.

Thanks Desslock. And I'm terribly sorry for not being so wise about this stuff. Appreciate it.

OK OK sorry that was ignorant of me. By facepalm I simply meant Leader's post on that 'MY own jutsu' thread which went a little something like this:

One day, human spacefarers may land on a large asteroid in our solar system. They may then carve it into the face of a hand, and with careful preparations, they may alter its trajectory so that it lands in South Dakota, on a mountain called Rushmore. If their calculations are very precise, the hand-shaped asteroid will land palm first on the prominent forehead of George Washington.
