View Full Version : How fearful are you of a possible asteroid collision with the Earth?

Question:
How fearful are you of a possible asteroid collision (extinction level) with the Earth, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most, and 1 being the least) of occurring during your life-span?
Ill say.... 4. You?
I have made the survey which consists of 6 questions, if you wish please fill it out as it will take a whole 15 seconds at most. If not oh well.

I'm not too worried about it, I figure if something big enough is coming this way, I'll have plenty of time to worry about it then.
However, if its:
One day, human spacefarers may land on a large asteroid in our solar system. They may then carve it into the face of a hand, and with careful preparations, they may alter its trajectory so that it lands in South Dakota, on a mountain called Rushmore. If their calculations are very precise, the hand-shaped asteroid will land palm first on the prominent forehead of George Washington.
Then by all means, go ahead.

When you wish upon a falling star, Your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.
As long as wishing on a falling star didn't cause it.

well if it does happen it better happen quickly and destroy EVERYTHING. I don't want a rookie asteroid to hit the sea and send a giant tidal wave wiping countries out. And i don't want to survive an impact and be burned alive or die from starvation etc
So if it has to happen, it should be a huge one that will obliterate everything within the second

No, It's awesome when you power up as you drop out of the sky and into a melee. The panch is loosed just as you hit the ground. It's even more devastating when you are using Gannondorf. You can also do the move were you power up in one direction and spin around to smash the guy who thought he could hit you from behind. Diabolical! I love those guys!

For those who state there not scared of it, thats complete ********.
I'm sorry, but... we're talking about an event that's so incredibly statistically unlikely that it doesn't even rate consideration.
I might be killed by someone dropping a piano on my head from a tenth story window. It's possible, sure. But it's very, very unlikely, so even though I have to acknowledge it as a statistical possibility, I can't say I live my life in fear of the event. If it happens, then I'll have a Warner Bros. death and so be it; but I can't say I'm afraid of it happening.
Catastrophic asteroid impacts fall in the same bucket. Statistically possible, but unlikely enough that I can't say I'm afraid of the event. How COULD you be? If you're afraid of something so statisticaly unlikely as an asteroid impact, then... how could you even get through the day without being gripped with terror at all the much more likely ways to die you pass on your way to work?
After my little run-in with the car windshield, I'll admit that I'm a bit less cavalier about traffic than I used to be. I used to joke that "I had the right of way" made a bad epitaph, but now I'm not joking as much when I say it. When I'm biking around town, frankly, the asteroids can take care of themselves, 'cause they're the farthest things from my mind. I'm much more worried about the very real possibility of getting hit by another car.

Um, Eternity, note the bold. You're arguing whether or not he believes the asteroid theory (as you call it) that, and I quote "killed the dinosaurs". Clearly, if he's only counting history, then his point still stands. Whether or not he believes it is totally irrelevant.
In quick summation: you still got owned, but now you're denying it. Sorry.
Oh, and Desslock covered the bit about being frightened of it. So yeah, I don't think there's anything else to add here...oh wait, yes there is. If it does happen, let's make sure it's a very tiny meteor/asteroid/whatever (I don't care enough to classify proper) that carries an alien symbiotic entity who will then, after fusing to an initial host, fuse to me.

It's not important to know everyone in a forum as long as you know the usuals, if you stick around long enough you get to know a lot of people whether they've been here for years or not.
If someone has a reputation that's even more noticeable then just someone who's posted an "I'm New Thread"
If people actually talk to you then you have some sort of fan base, whether it's good or bad: New people have the best fan base around here becuase everyone wants them out. :)

That was indeed me, At least a few people remember anyways lol. The site is still up, but I haven't written a review in ages.. for those curious the URL is: www.animelessons.net . Just haven't had the heart to take it down due to all the effort that went into it years ago.
And yea... the forum kind of died afterawhile... The final stab was when the URL died due to an invisionfree server crash or something and my site was one of the "lucky ones" which had no backup (lol but its all good towards the end it was plagued with spam bots anyways...)
Anyways to clear things up I am not "emo" in fact I am very pro-life. For those who are deeply interested the name originated from a game I was creating years ago which is still left undone.
The thread started because I am taking a statistics class and our objective was to think of a topic and to survey individuals and use the data to come up with tables etc and predictions.

All they have to do is put Chuck Norris out in front of the asteroid. It would change trajectory completely and go back in the direction it came, and then - upon turning around - explode when it got a safe distance from Earth, giving America a red, white, and blue shooting star/fireworks show to enjoy and cheer to as Chuck returned majestically to Earth from his epic space mission. The all American shards of asteroid would still be visible as Obama (this is a future event we're talking about here, folks) presented Chuck with his reward and title as hero and savior of the world and more importantly, America.

As much I hate thinking about how generations and generations of human development could be wiped out in the blink of an eye because of a solar catastrophy, at the end of the day I just end up shrugging and having a beer.

More to the point, I've watch enough movies to know that everything will be okay. Just send Bruce Willis and that whole team of yahoos. . .Bruce Willis, saving the world, one asteroid at a time.
Yeah all Bruce as to do is make love to a hot sexy Asian with a British Accent and the power of the five elements will call upon Captain Planet, who will then save us from the destruction of the asteroid.*
*= That is my interpretation of the Fifth Element, if anything is wrong with that and people are pissed becuase I completely destroyed an awesome movie, Good then my diabolical plan to take over the earth is working.

If Obama becomes president, I predict an asteroid will suddenly appear and kill us all just becuase he is elected, if McCain wins, pff no way an asteroid would touch us, McCain's brain waves would destroy it before our telescopes even laid eyes on it.

Even if it does or it dosen't hit, were all pretty much screwed in the end, maybe not now, not later, but eventually. One way or another, best not to think about it. Besides, I have my own space ship I can escape on. Persuade me and I may sell you my secret technologies :naughty: . Or join me and become one of my minions, we can rule what ever is left of the planet and immediately start repopulating. Oh yeah.

I wouldn't become president, I'd be shot before that even becomes a thought.
