A republic!

Maoists won the Constituent Assembly election held on 10 April 2008. The Maoists have insisted on the abolition of the monarchy and the removal of Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev as King with Nepal becoming a federal democratic state with an elected head of state. A newly-elected Assembly met in Kathmandu on May 28, 2008 and abolished the monarchy that had reigned for 240 years. There was a polling of constituent Assembly members and out of a total of 564 Assembly members, 560 voted to end Nepal's monarchical rule.[29][30][31] The proposal declared that Nepal had become, an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular and an inclusive democratic republic.[32]

Nepal's government has announced a public holiday for three days, from May 28th to May 30th, to celebrate the country becoming a Republic.

I hope the Nepalnese members of AN enjoy their three day weekend

I wish them the best of luck - new democracies can be incredibly divisive if not handled extremely carefully...

Still good news, though.

Gotta hand it to the king being willing to step down. Many lesser men would hold onto power.

He's not being given a choice in the matter.

Actually from what I understood he did endorse the election though yes I don't think he had a lot of say with civil war breathing down his neck there are those in the world who would have fought to the death to keep power.

...there are those in the world who would have fought to the death to keep power.

No doubt about that. For some reason the word 'Mugabe' is the first to spring to mind.

There's been a lot of unrest in Nepal for a while now. The king didn't have much of a choice.
