Leader Desslock versus.... A CAR!!!

The winner? I'd call it a draw, but since I'm not game for a rematch, I'll give it to the car as a TKO.

Yes, I got hit by a car today. Or rather, I HIT a car today. While cycling. I had the right of way, she came off a side street, she pulled out in front of me, and I ran into its driver's front quarter panel at around 27 MPH. My knees put two solid dents in the quarter panel, and my face went through the windshield.

Through.

I was not knocked unconscious, and in fact, I walked away from the crash, dragging my bike behind me. Had a cop not been there to throw in the towel, I think I could've come back in the next round.

Emergency services arrived in response to the large puddle of blood I left on the ground. Not drops; puddle.

The nice folks at the fire department put the restraint collar on me, hooked me up to an IV, strapped me to the back board, and I got a nice ride to the hospital in an ambulance. I was disappointed that they didn't use the siren, but in retrospect, maybe that's best.

My glasses, I'm told by the officer at the scene, were completely destroyed. But if their sacrifice kept my eyes from getting showered with glass, they're the best investment I ever made.

Did I mention that my face went through the windshield? When I sat up and heard the tinkle of glass, I thought, "That can't be good." I put my hands to my face and felt: first, a lot of glass, and second, a lot of blood. I picked out the larger shards I could find, then hopped off the hood to look at my bike. Any TRUE cyclist would've checked his bike FIRST, but at that point, I thought it had enough experience to take care of itself.

As I reached down to look at my bike, I noticed that my hands and arm looked like I'd been in a fight with Reidar. Head wounds bleed a lot. I did a quick personal damage assessment, then decided it'd be best to sit down on the curb and maybe call 911. The car wasn't going anywhere, there were plenty of witnesses, and I figured I'd leave them to sort it out.

I dragged my bike to the side and leaned forward to prevent myself from bleeding all over... well, everything. That's where the puddle formed. I pulled some more glass out of my face, then decided to take a picture of the damage to the car, for posterity's sake. Took one of myself, but frankly, you don't want to see it. I figure I'll save that one for the insurance adjuster. ;-)

So at the hospital, I got to have my first CAT scan. They wouldn't take off the neck brace until they scanned my neck for damage. I told them I'd know if there was damage, but they get picky about these things.

Anyone here ever have a CAT scan? Did you see/hear/smell anything weird when you did? When the beam passed over my skull, I saw strange flashes of purple & blue color, and smelled a strange industrial smell for a moment. Happened several times. That happen to anyone else? Weird.

End result: 15 stitches to put my nose back together, a few stiches in the forehead, and some in the side of my nose. I'm sure it would hurt if it wasn't for the painkillers they put me on. All I'm feeling is groovy at the moment.

I haven't seen the bike yet. Cops have it at the impound lot. I figure the front wheel is a loss. Given how fast I hit the car, I'm just hoping I didn't bend the fork.

All in all, I came out of this crash MUCH better than the last time I got hit by a car. I didn't walk right for a year, last time.

So... anyone else have a bad day? It kinda sucked for me. Oh, it's gonna hurt in the morning.

Remember that video with the basketballs being passed back and forth? Yeah, I really wish the driver had seen the moonwalking gorilla.

OMG... I hope that you will be ok. Geez... I bet that was a mess as it was painful. I am glad that you got glasses that took that impact and didn't shatter into your eyes as if it did, you could have been made blind. I have gotten numerous CAT scans before so I know what you are talking about. Usually they say don't look directly into the beam as it passes over you. I did once, and I saw those same colors! lol That X-ray machine does smell strange and industrial-like. The MRI ones smell weird too. In a way, you should have probably left the glass shards in because by pulling out the large ones, you unplugged the wounds fully and allowed the blood to flow out. :( I hope they gave you a strong painkiller. No doubt your whole face is going to be swollen and black and blue tomorrow!! :( If they didn't give you something heavy duty for the pain, go smoke something stronger! :P Seriously, get well soon! *hugs*

I'll try to post the ones of the car when I get home. I'm staying with family tonight just in case I have a concussion, so I can't upload the pics tonight.

I'm not sure the ones of my face even came out, because there was quite a lot of blood on my phone by that point.

And on my shorts, my shoes, my shirt (which is torn) and really everywhere else. The tech that came in to wash the blood off me spent about 5 minutes scrubbing just my left arm. I have very few cuts on my left arm, so it all came from my face.

I think the cut on my left elbow came from the windshield wiper, quite honestly. I hope I broke those too.

lol! Well, you are taking this well. I got to give you credit for that! If I were you I would have stayed with family too. Concussions are nothing to mess with and the thing is if they suddenly appear and get serious enough, you won't even realize you have one. I have had a few before and I didn't even know I had one until I started coming out of it. Best thing for you to do is to relax, watch some good TV, and get some rest.

Oh, you wanna hear about the driver? She was FINE. She was in the car with her grandmother and some kids. All I heard was "Nononononono...." coming out of the car. She was fine right up until she started being questioned by authorities (through a translator, since she only spoke Spanish), at which point she actually fainted in a bout of hysterics.

Yeah, lady... you don't have so much as a bruise. I'm really feelin' bad for you. Sorry to bleed all over your car, it must be SOOOOOO frickin' traumatic for you. Let me get up off this back board and apologize properly.

Why the hysterics? Well, I heard some of this from the EMS crews afterwards. Evidently, she didn't own the car; it was her uncle's. And she has a Mexican driver's license. I'm guessing that somewhere, the translation went awry. She got a ticket for what happened, since she was illegally in the wrong. I'm guessing she heard that as "You will now be dragged to jail and deported in front of your children" because that's the kind of reaction she had.

I told all the ER staff, if they saw her (since she was coming in too) to tell her I was fine and in good spirits. I don't harbor any ill will toward her; she just wasn't looking for the moonwalking gorilla.

Well, it is a good thing that her and everyone else didn't get injured. Its just a shame that you did. I will have to say by being in good spirits that is good. Being depressed or whatever during injuries can actually make the pain worse. Also, by not holding any kind of grudge against her shows that you are a forgiving person and there should be more people like you in the world that can forgive a person when he or she makes a mistake.

Desslock, this is because you don't post enough in the video game forum. If you did, you'd clearly know that you don't start by taking on the boss. You've got to level up a bit first. I'm not just talking riding either. Start taking out small animals, then rollerbladers (they're always in the way of bikers anyway), from there, pick off the weaker bikers one by one. THEN you might be ready to take on the car.

In all seriousness, glad you're okay. Sounds like a pretty crazy accident. My dad is a big biker and I'm always worried this kind of **** will happen to him. I do want to check one thing the doctors might not have though. Your response to the following inquiry should be enough to know.

Sheesh...women drivers... *gets lynched* Seriously though, the only motor vehicle accidents or near-accidents I've been in, whether I was a passenger, driver, or riding my bike, have been caused by women drivers. Well, women and Pennsylvanians, sometimes Pennsylvanian women. Stereotypes they may be, but...

Yeah, that was just what I wanted to see first thing this morning when I woke up. Notice that my bicycle is right beside me, because I am a real cyclist.

The guy behind me is testing for spinal injuries (even though I told him I was fine), and the guy kneeling beside me put in an IV about as painlessly as I've ever felt it done. I thanked him very specifically for his talent, because any man who can put in an IV needle without me feeling it deserves high praise.

Yeah, a Harlock avatar might be appropriate for a little while... -_-; Harlock's scar is way cooler, though. My scar is gonna look more like that chick from They Are My Noble Masters.

How do I feel this morning? Well, I've found a few stiff muscles, but that's it. I haven't even bothered with the painkillers. I keep reaching to take off or adjust my glasses, which aren't there.

I'm glad to see I didn't imagine things, and that my face did go all the way THROUGH the windshield. I was worried that maybe I'd exaggerated, but there's the proof.

DavenIII
April 3rd, 2008, 08:08 AM
You ever think that maybe the guy putting the IV in wasn't especially skilled and that you were just thinking about some other things while it was happening.

Well I'm glad you're Ok now (What kinda drugs did they give ya), how's your face? my sister had a bad accident like that once had to get a buncha stiches on her forehead and elected to have some plastic surgery to cover it up (she was 17 at the time so I don't blame her) wondering if its bad enough that you would think about that, or are you just GAR and want to show off you're battle wounds.

Also since you seem to be keeping a somewhat sunny mood about this, I have a question.

Of the cyclists I know, some of them wear helmets as though their life depended on it (funnily enough), and the others... one of them states flat out that if he falls off his bike and he's wearing a helmet, he might live and end up brain damaged, so he doesn't wear one, since he'd rather be dead than brain damaged. :(

Arizona is a piece of cake to drive, except you just have to get used to the left turn lanes (I had no idea how to do those things). Did you break or significantly damage the concrete, because if not I doubt you can claim a win in that situation, now, it is true that Desslock's face was obviously stronger then a windshield, but I doubt you beat the pavement in a fight, that is infact a much tougher foe.

by the way kenny, I was gonna go there with the bad driving in NJ (since I'm right on the boarder I can tell you NJ drivers suck compared to NY drivers)

but everything pales in comparision to NYC...that place is horrible, plus there a Taxi will hit you and just keep driving and noone will even stop and think about it, or if they do they'll complain about the ambulance having to come cause its causing even more traffic.

I finally got home, and I'll post an "after" pic. I don't want to post a "during" pic, because it's gory and it'll upset someone.

Here I am, safe and sound, sans glasses:

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i91/AlycWafiago/zAfterTheCrash.jpg

People have mentioned it, but Dess, do you wear a helmet when you ride?
Sometimes. This particular day, no, and it's probably a good thing. A full motorcycle helmet would've offered protection, but a standard bike helmet would've probably done damage to my neck, throat and jaw.

If you were in AZ, you'd not only be dead, but your dead body would be busy being cursed out by the driver. The drivers here are so bad, its not even funny.
Yes, I know. I'm in Lake Havasu.

So you gonna sue for everying?
Doubtful. I'm not that kind of a guy. As long as the insurance company is willing to be reasonable, I'll be reasonable. The moment they try to **** around, I'm going to unleash my inner Troll upon them, with no hesitation or remorse.

Hopefully your bike survived, and will, with some TLC and a minimal number of spare parts, fully recover.
The bike is history. I picked it up at the impound lot and it won't even roll. The front wheel and forks are somehow fine, but I bent, crimped and in one spot, tore the frame. I think the handlebars might also be bent, but it's kinda hard to tell. The lights are smashed, the rack is bent, and my pack twisted off.

After more than 5,000 miles, may she rest in peace. But I'm going to salvage the components, because hey - free components!

I priced replacement bikes today, and it's gonna run me about a grand, minimum. Oops! Did I say "me"? Oh, no. I'm not paying for it. No way in Hell.

Didn't think you looked like that Desslock.

I was in AZ in Feb.. If you think THAT'S bad, then try comming to Jersey. Arizona is a piece of cake to drive, except you just have to get used to the left turn lanes (I had no idea how to do those things). Last time I heard Jersey has the third worst drivers in the country. New York is second, probably because of NYC alone(totally believable). Driving in NYC = hell.

Bah, the only reason it's so bad to drive in Jersey is because of all the Pennsylvanians who come and clog our roads. At least in South Jersey. I'm guessing the New Yorkers are to blame for North Jersey.

Most Pennsylvanians can't drive for s***. Ask Kagura, she knows. She had to live there for most of her life.

oh no, you wrong up here, I drive to hackensack NJ everyday from pomona NY and as soon as I get onto 17 people become horrible drivers...I have no idea why, but I do know the vast majority of those drivers have Jersey plates :P

Sorry to hear about your bike btw Desslock, I hope you get some type of compensation....although...considering you think she's being deported...she probably didn't have any sorta of insurance ;(

I'd take 17 anyday compared to some other roads.

Plus, the roads in NJ right now are a piece of **** because of the winter. They're in horrible condition with potholes of all sizes everywhere, and I do mean ALL. Yea, not so good when you're on Route 80 doing 65 mph and you hit a section where there are literally CHUNKS of the road missing!!!:$%&#!:

Well, you're speaking to someone who has been to North Jersey a grand total of 4 times in 22 years, so I'm not especially familiar with the drivers there. I do know, however, that if you're traveling on Route 47 the chances of being wiped out by a Pennsylvanian are far greater than getting wiped out by someone Jersey born and bred.

And don't even ask me about Pennsylvania drivers in Pennsylvania. I still have nightmares about it.

As for you, Leader Desslock, I'm glad to see that you're in relatively good shape. Keep that attitiude and you'll be right as rain in no time.

I know you mean well, but the way I read that, it sounds like the understatement of the year.

Though, I'm wondering something: why do I expect to see the bike accident to show up in the next Post a Pic of Yourself thread?

Though, seeing the picture of Dess after his patching cycle is a relief; I'm glad it's not as bad as I originally imagined it. Again, I hope you have a quick and full recovery.

She was a Marin Stinson.

Great bike. They've since redesigned the Stinson to be more of a 'comfort bike', so I'm going to try to find what they're calling a 'commuter bike'. Solid frame, no front shocks, capable of mounting racks. I might go with another Marin, or I might pick another brand. Not sure yet. I hate to go all the way to Vegas to buy a bike.

Most Pennsylvanians can't drive for s***. Ask Kagura, she knows. She had to live there for most of her life.

lol! I figured you would say something like this! I just now noticed your post blackknight. lol Well, I'll comment! :P I did live there for almost my whole life, 31 years and 3 months! Yuck! At least in Western PA the drivers always suck! They are always deliberately hitting their brakes to get rear-ended and then suing the person that hit them for insurance money to buy a new car with. Its like they get full coverage on a POS and deliberately get reared so that they can get a new pimptastic vehicle. Also, they almost always drive DUI or DWI and they get caught repeatedly, but yet are allowed to continue to drive! They don't obey lanes, they don't yield when they are supposed to and so much more! lol (Please no one be offended by this post.)

Here, when they come to Jersey, they think they rule the road and since they are here and not in PA, they can drive however they want. Its like the other day, we were sitting at a light at this intersection and there was a PA driver ahead of us in the straight through lane. The line for straight through was really long. When the light changed, the right turning lane only was empty so the "Stunnod" PA driver cut over into the right turn only lane, suddenly gave it gas, and cut back over in the straight through only lane and went straight deliberately so he wouldn't get the red light. He almost got hit by a Jersey driver. Also, PA drivers seem to love to come here and wail their trash out all over the place and call Jersey "a waste dump". Well, take a look at Western PA! It is a dump! lol And as far as potholes go, check out some of those major roads in PA. For example, Route 85, and Route 256. Those are terrible.

Back on topic, I apologize Leader Desslock! lol I got into a PA driver/ Western PA hate rant! :P I am glad you are ok. You could have been hurt a lot worse. For going through the windshield of a car, you look really good! Its a shame about your bike though from the pic I seen of it, that bike looked like it was a really good one as well as also, an expensive one. :( I am curious about something. I wonder how much damage you did to that Mexican's car??

Ouch...really. Ouch. That's... ouch. x_x

I'm a little confused though. Did you hit it side-on or front the front? Because if you hit it from the side and went through the windscreen... I'd say it was a first round knockout for that car!

For all intensive purposes, would you say you're all right?

Intents and Purposes.
Intensive care. :P

By the sound of things, he's not going to look so "Leader Desslock", but is going to look a bit more "Captain Harlock" instead.

(but he'll still be blue)

...Leader Harlock?

The guy behind me is testing for spinal injuries (even though I told him I was fine), and the guy kneeling beside me put in an IV about as painlessly as I've ever felt it done. I thanked him very specifically for his talent, because any man who can put in an IV needle without me feeling it deserves high praise.

They tend not to take your word for it though. I once told a Nurse that I didn't need a potassium IV, especially not if it was going to make my arm swell up like that. To their credit it only took the half an hour to agree. :|

I wish I could find a Nurse that could put an IV in painlessly. Or draw blood on the first go.

Or a Doctor for that matter.

As long as the headline wasn't "Man puts head through windscreen imitating Naruto", you're alright. ;)

Seriously though, I wonder what would happen if they found out that you watched anime...

Doubtful. I'm not that kind of a guy. As long as the insurance company is willing to be reasonable, I'll be reasonable. The moment they try to **** around, I'm going to unleash my inner Troll upon them, with no hesitation or remorse.

See, its like I said! PA drivers are nuts! I did have my driving permit once while I was living back in Western Pa and I couldn't stand how they drove so I came up with my own standards for driving! lol They love to high beam a person at night and they tailgate so it glares into your eyes from the rear view. Best thing to do is adjust a mirror so that it shines back into their eyes and they will either back off or wreck! lol Forget about being a pedestrian ANY where in PA! They don't yield for you. Like you said, they will run you down and not give a sh*t! Oh, and regarding the Amish, I bet its a pain in the A** driving around those buggys. Where I was living, we had some Amish and drivers would blow the horn at the Amish Buggy drivers. I had witnessed a tragedy once. The PA driver was following behind a buggy and they blew the horn real long and hard. It scared the horse causing it to go out of control and it rolled the buggy. Here, there wasn't only a Amish man but a woman and kid too and the kid got killed. :( It was so sad. Amish shouldn't actually be allowed to drive in the middle of the main roads and not move off when a car comes though, but the PA drivers should learn how to drive too and stop being in such a da*n hurry to go to the nearest bar or beer distributor or to go get their fix. :(

Leader Desslock, I am glad that didn't happen in PA or you would have been in worse shape. By the way, how have you been feeling? Better I hope.
