View Full Version : Moving Out

Well people; I know you all like to think of Videl as "independent, self-reliant, sassy-and-in-yo-face, and alpha." Well, Videl thinks it that time for her to break free of the shackles of on-campus-housing shackles, and live on her own...with two other people in the house.

I got an offer to move in with a buddy and his roommate (she's a girl), since they've been looking for a new one. I was planning to move out into a place this summer, but with my RA job, I don't actually have the time to work two jobs ( since they won't let me). The only time I could actually save up enough money to get a place RIGHT as summer started would be now, and with loan refund checks coming in, its like, take it or leave it, RIGHT NOW.

Its 275 a month for rent, plus about 100 for utilities. Utilities include; Internet, water, and electricity.

So, long story short, what was it like for those of you who have moved out of your parents basement and into a place of your own, paying rent and all that broohaha? I do live on campus, but I find it to be just as restraining as living with my mom. I kinda want to know if it was strange or a bit awkward being on your own all of a sudden, or if it was endearing.

Also, if I do take the offer, kegger housewarming party at my place. TA12 and Ryushe bring all the hot black men, Tenou can bring all the beer and hard A, and Prons can be our drunken entertainment.

Well, I live in an apartment with my sister (never, never live with your sister, Jesus) and it's okay I suppose. Since I live in a tourist town, rent rates are HIGH (ours is $590 a month for a two bedroom one bath apartment on the basement floor, not including utilities...and it's only this because we managed to sign a year lease during a promotional event and talk our way cheaper. There were a few problems with our place. Supposed to be more like $720 a month O_O).

At first it was a little odd -- but after we actually moved in and the emptiness went away, it felt like home. A stuffy home, but home just the same. Granted, I spend a lot of time at my dad's house anyways (he has the computer, washer and dryer, and food usually :P), but it's nice to know that you are free. *nods* Seriously.

I don't recommend taking the room that faces the street. I can't even open my blinds without fear someone will be looking in on me >_<. That's a horrible, horrible feeling.

Also, don't be the neighbor that stays up all night partying. It sucks *** listening to music blasted for all hours of the night when you have to get up at six to go to work. You don't even want to know how many times I called the police on my neighbors upstairs (damn kids). Cops don't do ****.

Videl , it will be hard as hell the first year you are out on your own. At one point after getting out of the service i was so broke between bills, rent, school, and gas that I had to eat peanut butter out of the jar with my hands because I had no silverware. It may seem like fun, being able to do whatever you want but you are merely trading parental control for work and financial controls which are much more strict and even less forgiving.

I've lived with a friend of mine an his older sister for about 8 months now, I pay 700 a month because I kinda sorta live in their storage room :P. They pay about 900 each a month, not including internet or food. I don't have to chip in on groceries so that's cool. I live in Alberta, this is my problem, rent is much too high anywhere you go. I should move to Vancouver like I had intended on doing but a girl got in the way <_<. Anyway. A couple more of my friends wanna move here for work, so we're all goin' to get a house, since I hate apartments. We'll have a yard, and cheaper rent. Party time indeed, it's goin' to be rad.

That's not what it said on the police report....

By the way Videl, ramen is your friend.

Anything that only costs fifteen cents to eat is a meal to be treasured. Stock up now, you'll thank me later.

How big is the place you live, it better be a 6 bedroom house with a platinum jacuzzi for that kind of money.

This is true, brown mustard in a squeeze bottle should be the only thing in your fridge. A crock pot is a godsend as well. Low maintenance (especially if you are lazy and buy the liners so you don't have to wash. Sams Club is your friend for things like paper towels, ramen, and toilet paper.

I imagine after moving in, I'll feel more like being home. I guess in the infamous words of Stewie; "I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!" I'm used to living in a small area with people already, I do it now living on campus. I'll just have my own room and a kitchen to boot.

Also, it won't be a party house. Only thing at the most is music, and all the neighbors are kids themselves. We all play guitar with the amps hella loud. Not at night though, thats just rude. I rarely party, and the only parties would be me and my friends watching movies together, 10 at most. Otherwise, I won't be partying much. I'll be stuck at school most of the time.

I live on my own NOW, living on campus. It would just be more so paying bills and for internet. I figure that money will indeed, be non-existent. I've been wanting to lose weight, so what better way than a strict diet of Ramen Noodles and Peanut Butter sandwiches. For silverware....I can dish out ten bucks to my local dollar store for 3 forks for a dollar.

I'm lucky to get the rent as cheap as it is. There's a yard (weather is crappy now...ITS FRICKIN WASHINGTON) so the yard is muddy and crap. Theres going to much fixage once the weather turns around. Hookah and BarBQs in the backyard on summer days. YES.

Edit: Also, I have a mini-fridge, Microwave, George Foreman, Bowls and plates, water boiler...and rice cooker. I have all this because in Freshman Housing (remember, I'm a RA for Freshman Dorms), we don't have kitchens. I had to make due with Goodwill being my ***** for cheap appliances.

Haha, it's funny you should mention that. All we have in our refrigerator is 1.) a bottle of mustard, 2.) a bottle of ketchup (sister's idea, I loathe the stuff), and 3.) a tub of butter.....

And it's been almost.....let's see, May of last year.....

I will give you the best advise possible from experience. Always have enough money in your account to cover two months rent. This is holy and must never be touched except the most dire of circumstances. That has saved me more than once. Ideally try t live on 70% of your income if possible and squirrel the rest away. This being impossible set aside 5 or 10 percent a month to get your safety net set up.

I hope moving out on your own isn't as depressing as you guys make it sound.

I for one can deal with being low on food, but being broke AND tired from a ****** job? I could never pull that off.

Nope, it's a two bedroom, one bathroom apartment, an everything keeps breaking. But that's the deal with Alberta, every place in E town is like this, you won't find a place for under 700 a month, an even those places are horrible. Yeah, Alberta is mighty rich, but housing is hell. This new house will be pretty rad though, I can deal with makin' huge payments as long as my friends are around.

Thing is, I'm a RA. I can't look for another job (on campus or off) with the RA job, because my boss mentioned it would 1) take up too much of my time, and 2) I can only work 19 hours on campus, and since the RA job takes up all 19 hours, I can't do it. Being a RA gets me 80 bucks every two weeks, and free housing. The free housing is really the only plus. It would take up about two months to pay for one months of rent at the house, so thats a sign that I need a better paying job.

Luckily, we get FinAid checks on Monday. Mine should total to about 2,400, so I could pay a few months or so in advance so I wouldn't have to worry about rent while I look for a job. The only thing would be my other bills I have to pay (Cell Phone and Credit Cards) which would add up. I would just have to save up about everything I would be earning for the place, and continue to do so. My spending monay would be pretty much non-existent...which sucks of course....because I love stuff. So yeah, RAMEN!

Nothin'. Cowboys, an a lot of nothing. It's just the oil boom, there's enough high paying trade jobs goin' around that everyone is makin' enough as long as they don't go to university an take any other job. I want to be a teacher, but they don't make much here an rent is huge

Ye doth speak truth.

Being in the apartment system for 3 years, I can say that Bernard hits the nail on the head with this advice. A lot of what I have to say will be echoes, but I'll add in my 2 cents, nontheless.

1) Money: always have what I like to call a 'go kit'. This is enough money saved up that you can live off of for 3 months to pay bills, rent, etc. During those times, you need to hustle for a job. I usually try to set aside a good 20% of my income for savings. The rest go to bills and other necessities.

2) Live within your means: I'm assuming you already know how to do this, so I won't go into much detail here. Too many people get jacked up on debt because they neglect this very fact. The next time you see that tempting game or DVD ask yourself these 2 questions: "Do I need this?" and "Can I afford this?" If you answer no to either of those questions, save your cash and move on.

Its gonna be hard on your pockets for a good while getting situated, but you'll recover. Just gotta stay on your P's and Q's about your cash.

The whole "NOT spending money" will be really hard, since I need to work on my discipline when it comes to spending money. Its paying off Credit Cards which will be the breaker for stability. There are reasons I have to pay for them, which delve deeper into family issues, but I think I'll just have to try and get rid of those. I didn't want them in the first place.

I don't buy anime much (unless its used) and I rarely buy games. I still only have two games for my PS3, and its about 12 weeks old.

When I first moved out it was fun...I bought a Condo 15-20 min from where my parents lived, I threw a bunch of parties, was there for about 3 months then it burnt down in a fire...had to move back in with my parents, that was like 3 years ago, it was rebuilt I'be been living alone for a While now, the biggest thing is the money...but then, I'm paying 1800 mortgage and 300 common charges (then cable phone internet car insurance etc etc)

Oh man Bernard I feel you on that one luckiy I got hand me down silverware, but for lunch I eat nothing but Ramen noodles...why? cause I can get 12 bowls of soup for a dollar twenty. you can't beat that, I remember growing up always wondering why my parents would buy the bagged ceral or bring coupons for 50 cent off, I always thought....whats 50 cents here or there...well its freaking ALOT... you learn that fast...specially when laundry is 225 a load...I save every quarter I can nowadays for laundry money... :P

The cool thing is, I'm moving in with like, one of my best friends, and the other person that's been living there has been wanting to meet me officially, since we've only said "hey" once in a while. She's happy for me to move in though, so I know I'm with people I can have a good time with. I think I'd be too lonely if I had a place all on my own, so at least now, I can have two people on the same floor....

I do now, but not like 30 residents and more like two people only, and I'm not responsible for them.

Edit: Washer and Dryer in house. OH YEAH.

Yeah I think what you're doing is probably better then what I did, though you better be able to really rely on these people, its good that you're moving into an existing situation, I had two friends ( that were good friends) move into an appartment together slightly before I bought my house...one thing lead to another one got caught up in an addiction and started missing payments the other one didn't want to get into a fight with his friend but eventually it was causing real problems he was being owed 200-400 dollars like every month...they don't talk to each other anymore the one moved back in with his parents the other moved back with his parents for a while then eventually got a better job and now is renting in the city (NYC) I just hope you can really trust the people.

Personally, I'll get a place of my own in a couple years (like 3, so I'd be 23), but I'm moving in with my dad when he moves out of jersey. Hey, it's better than living with your MOM.

btw, peanut butter and ramen is NOT a good way to lose weight. both are very fattening.

VidelCoolGirl
March 29th, 2008, 02:34 PM
Yeah, I'm moving in with people who had been keeping this place for about a year. I'm the one moving in, so if anybody is reliable, it had better be me. I've known at least one of the people for about a year now, and he's pretty damn reliable. I mean even if he owes you money in general, he pays it right away. I'm not worried about moving into the situation. Its a pretty good one. Plus, theres a big dog, who is so damn friendly and cute its sickening.

As far as addiction....beer once in a while and hookah with tobacco, not weed? I should be okay. I can always bum a cig.

yeah that really isn't something you have to worry about, if you're eating peanut butter without silverware or ramen noodles all the time most likely you're probably not getting enough calories to begin with...so if the only calories you are getting happen to be slightly fattening it really doesn't matter :P

Well I know that. Peanut Butter is only helpful to a diet in small doses, and ramen...well all that is is starch. Yet, I meant in the sense, its all I would be able to afford, and it would be a small amount to boot. I feel as if I would be starving myself more so, rather than eating a lot.

I'm going to take advantage of the fact that my parents are basically letting me mooch of them still for another year or two and save up money from my new job before moving out. It may suck living with the parents, but hell, no rent, bills, etc and free food, I can live with it.

I moved out and lived with a friend for a couple months over the summer, but while I wasn't technically living with my parents, my friend's parents treated me like a second son.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Fobb and Sushikins on this one. It's not a problem for me to move out, but in New York, theres no possible way I could afford an apartment while being a full time student. While I do get a decent check from my job every week, I'd still honestly have to sell some powder bricks just to so I could afford something decent.

Man listen, there's plenty of girls I that I've told I live with my mom. Doesn't hamper my fun in any way :P

Serious though, I know a lot of people that's eager to move out once they have a little money, and have to go crying back to money and daddy when the money is done. I'd rather save up right now and concentrate on school then move out when I'm comfortable enough and/or when I can afford a place, than hit a rough patch and have to go back home. And I love Raman noddles and all, but not 7 days a week.

Well its not like I live at home anyway. Really, like I mentioned, its just a change of location for me. I've been on my own since freshman year, and went home last summer to help moms out. Its just moving off campus, and into a house, rather than from a dorm, back to parents.

Me and my best friend that's planing to room together went to look at apartments and the average two bed room apartment was about $1700 - $1900. To be honest, I am a little worried about that. I'm paying some in advance, and plan to work and save for what I would be paying if I didn't pay in advance. Hopefully, I can find a decent job, and pay off personal bills, while I save money up for the summer living (July and on). So far, I'm planning all this without the help of parents. I'd rather save up right now and concentrate on school then move out when I'm comfortable enough and/or when I can afford a place, than hit a rough patch and have to go back home. And I love Raman noddles and all, but not 7 days a week.

You can save up if you want too, I'll eat my ramen noodles and build equity right now thanks, Its worth it to struggle for a few years in order to own ( as in it'll be paid off) a house by the time I'm 40 :)

Also I just got a 3k check in the mail from my Tax returns mostly due to owning a house :)

there are multiple ways to do it, you're way is not better or worse then mine.

Plus ramen 5 times a week for lunch at work isn't that bad...
Rice is cheap and easy to make and you can mix all kinds of stuff in with rice...pasta is not to expensive and luckily for ME (probably not Bernard ;P) I do only live 20 min from my parents...I can go over there for diner if I run out of food :P

I simply want to be out on my own, so its easier when I'm older. I don't want to have to put strain on my family income, because its already pretty low. If I can pay my own way here at this place for a while, as I save, I should be okay for the future.

Also, I usually eat out at restaurants once in a while, but I don't eat a lot, and if I do, I tend to have rice with something. The campus cafeteria is kinda crappy (ironic, because thats where I'm going to look for a job. 10.43 an hour, Union if I want...), so I make my own food with my various appliances in my own dorm. A George Foreman, Hot water boiler, and rice cooker go far. I had soba noodles with instant curry today. The noodles I've had forever, and the curry was on a special sale, and I saved it for when I was really hungry.

Anywhere you go is the same cry, money worries...
Stupid rent. At least I got a promotion, I better make more. I owe my roomate like 200 bucks now, because I wanted to buy some plane tickets for a show next month
