View Full Version : Earth Hour

Anyone ever heard of this? It's apparently some promotion to cease use of home electricity for one hour on March 29th. It's part of a plan originated in Australia to help the environment by lowering energy consumption and carbon emissions.
I have to say, this is probably the most optimistic global warming pitch I've ever heard. I'm running this Earth Hour through my head and really doubting the point/effectiveness of it.
Anyway, perhaps there's more to this? Anyone else heard of this Earth Hour?

I've never heard of the Earth Hour. It's seems like a silly idea. It doesn't change anything. All it will do is make a few people feel warm and fuzzy inside because they think they are saving the planet. Those people invariably wear sandals.
I hate having a queen on my country's money but it's better than esoteric illumanati pyramids and the eye of Horus. Your nation is a tribute to the ancient mystery religion of the elite rich! The phallic obelisk and sacred geometry in the city plan of Washington D.C.! Don't you see it, you're all fools! Fools, do you hear me?!
Ahem, as I was saying... Earth Hour=stupid.

I think the point was to make all the hair pitted hippies to feel warm and fuzzy as they bicycle to more anti-war riots or sit ins at their local WI-Fi hot spots.
But seriously WTF? stop hugging the earth and think of ways to get us off of islamo-Fascist oil

I guess I'll join in as best as I can.
Still going to need a light or two to read some magazines, or just listen to my Portable MP3 Player.
Just saw the Google homepage

Whatever, I might turn off my computer, or something.
Which, really, is a big accomplishment for me.

So when exactly is this hour? I might do it, but if I try convincing my family, they'd laugh me out of the house.

Is it just me or does google need to keep the skin? I'm sure a lot of nerds like myself enjoy the lack of light!
Fat chance of me turning stuff off I just got Folding at Home running non-stop for a good cause anyways.

I like the black color scheme. I actually think they should keep it. Looks pretty cool.

I could see how this would help if ALL major cities observed it for a period of two or more days, but frankly, it sounds like a huge waste of time.
For every person that turns off their lights, there are four who are using them at full capacity. If I'm going to stumble around in the dark, I'm gonna make sure it's worth while.

I turned off the lights, but the computer and television were still on. Does that count?

Darn. I didn't realize today was March 29th (I no longer keep up with dates.)
I don't mind doing little stuff like this, even if some (or most...or...all) say it's pointless. And, I hear that for each hour a light is kept on in one's house, a unicorn's leg is broken. Maybe there are people who don't mind living in a world filled with crippled unicorns, I'm thankful that I'm not one of them.
Seriously, let's do all we can. To those of you BitTorrenting, don't seed, just turn off your computers. :)
Although, my dad wouldn't have let me do something like this, anyhow. <_<

I turned off all the electric lights. It was nice working by the light of the whale oil lamps, for a change.

Turning the lights just because others do is something I'll never do. I was planning on taking a look outside to see whether or not the neighbors had their lights on but I forgot. Oh well, there's always next year.

blackknight and I had everything off in our apartment, except for the T.V. and that was because we were snuggling on our bed and watching Law and Order on TNT! :P At least we had our lights off and the computers and so forth. I really enjoyed that 1 hour! ;)

Ironically I was sick over the weekend and had to get a lot of extra sleep, so everything was turned off much longer than usual. I still don't think much of the whole affair. I think it gives people a falses sense of accomplishment but I suppose it isn't hurting anything, so there not much to complain about. I guess the barely incremental gain is just really leaving me feeling empty afterward :)

I wonder exactly how many people did participate in this anyways...
Mr March
April 2nd, 2008, 09:39 PM
That's what I was trying to figure out. I read a bit about it on the internet and the general consensus seems to be the effect is negligible. It can't hurt, but it seems as if it simply not that big a gain.
Kagura

I didn't think it would matter much especially since most people in the world probably didn't participate. Too many things in people's lives have them occupied like Internet, Digital Cable, Video gaming, so forth that no one would care about Earth Hour. Did everyone in the world have this at the same time?

I don't think it's so much that most didn't participate. IMO, the gain just doesn't seem worth the level of importance placed upon the event. But, that's just my opinion.
As I understand it Earth Hour was an Australian campaign. It started in 2007 and I guess because of the "popularity" of environmental campaigns, Earth Hour has started to spread to other countries (no doubt thanks to the internet).

Well, here in the US we had Earth Hour too. I believe it was from 8 pm to 9 pm Eastern Standard Time (-5 GMT).
