GALVESTON, Texas - A jury sentenced a young father Wednesday to 25 years in prison for severely burning his infant daughter after putting her in a microwave and turning it on for up to 20 seconds.
Joshua Mauldin was teary-eyed after hearing the sentence. His mother sobbed loudly in the courtroom.
The jury had convicted Mauldin on Tuesday of felony injury to a child, rejecting his claims that he was insane when he put his daughter Ana in the microwave last year.
Prosecutors had wanted him sentenced to the maximum of life in prison. Still, Galveston County prosecutor Xochitl Vandiver said she was satisfied with the sentence.
"It's extremely important for people to know that just because this case was sensational, it doesn't mean that (child abuse) goes away," she said. "Child abuse is an important issue. It should be focused on."
Sam Cammack III, Mauldin's attorney, had asked jurors to consider his client's long history of mental illness and sentence him to probation so he could be treated at a hospital.
"He still doesn't get the treatment for mental illness that he needs," Cammack said. "He's not going to get that in prison."
Jurors deliberated for 6 1/2 hours over two days before sentencing Mauldin. They also fined him $10,000.
Prosecutors said Mauldin hurt his daughter because he was angry that he was in a loveless marriage. They also said Mauldin had a history of violence and of lying about being mentally ill to get out of trouble.
Mauldin claimed he started hallucinating when he was left alone in a Galveston hotel room with his daughter, feeling like mud was running up his body and consuming him.
Just before putting her in the room's microwave, he punched the then 2-month-old child and placed her in the room's safe and refrigerator.
Mauldin at first told police his daughter had been severely sunburned, later changing his story and saying he had accidentally spilled hot water on her while making coffee.
Ana suffered second- and third-degree burns to her left ear, cheek, hand and shoulder and required two skin grafts. Part of her left ear had to be amputated.
After the sentence was handed down, Joanie Mauldin insisted her son was insane and blamed herself for not getting her son help and for Ana's injuries.
"I pray he gets help. But I don't see it happening in a penitentiary," she said, insisting her son loved his daughter. "Nobody in their right mind would cook a child."
Ana, now 1, suffered second- and third-degree burns to her left ear, cheek, hand and shoulder and has required several skin grafts. Part of her left ear had to be amputated.
Before Joshua Mauldin was taken away, Ana's foster mother, Heather Croxton, told him during an emotional victim impact statement about the pain he's caused his daughter.
"There is no excuse for your actions and I hate that one day you will be set free and allowed to move on with your life while Ana continues to pay for your actions," Croxton told Mauldin, who will be eligible for parole after he serves half his sentence.
"I hope that somehow you pay for what you have done to this innocent, beautiful baby girl," she said.
Croxton, whose husband is a step-cousin to the girl's mother, Eva Mauldin, said she hopes to adopt Ana.
A trial to terminate the Mauldins' parental rights is scheduled for April. Eva Mauldin refused defense attorneys' requests to testify and lives in Arkansas..

Um...if he had a long history of mental illness and KNEW about it (trying to use it in his defense), he should never have become a father. So unstable that he would eventually microwave an innocent baby? Yeah, that's good parental material right there. He should be up on that stand for more than just child abuse.

That guy should be teary-eyed not for his punishment, but for the fact that he hurt his own daughter. What a ****** **** ***** ******!! And why the hell is his mother all worked up about his sentencing? She should be worried more about her granddaughter, the poor victim in all this madness. The whole family should be examined for mental deficiency.
It's stories like this that make me hate the world.

Given that it's Texas, I'm surprised the guy wasn't given a summary trial and a prompt execution via firing squad by his neighbors.
They must not have caught him before the police, is all.
Are there legal restrictions on people with mental illnesses having sex and getting married, in America?
No, but I've often thought that procreation should be subject to some sort of licensure. Having a child and raising it badly has a much larger societal effect than merely driving a car, hunting, fishing or lots of other things which require a license.
Of course the problem with licensing procreation is that there's no objective, medical test to determine who the Stoopid people are.

Unfortunately no, but a person ought to be responsible enough to know they aren't parent material. I'm guessing this man must have proved his instability in order to have a 'long history of mental illness and/or violence' under his belt.
He knew he had a problem -- he must have -- considering he tried to use it as his defense in court. Doesn’t even look like he’s shown remorse, lying about what he did, tearing up only after sentencing. He should have never become a parent (or shall I say 'sperm donor' considering no parent would ever do that to their child) knowing his history.
Tch.
Hopefully he'll be brutalized so badly in prison, being microwaved would seem a blessing. Only then would there be justice.

Entitled White Male
Steadily becoming a dime a dozen in the fast-paced world of college, the Entitled White Male wonders why the Earth kept on turning after leaving him and his kind behind. Raised on a steady diet of Penn and Teller's ********! and South Park, Entitled White Male doesn't care about issues unless they're being delivered by either two Libertarian magicians or two Libertarian college dropouts who hide their shocking ignorance behind cartoon characters. Entitled White Male finds it completely preposterous that this nonsensical world can't be tailor-made to address the needs of the non-disabled white male who is afforded every luxury our society has to offer from birth. And why shouldn't it? This is what the Entitled White Male thinks and stews about whenever he sees a handicapped parking spot or a United Negro College Fund, and can only listen to some quality Henry Rollins monologues to stoke that burning White rage.
If anything, Entitled White Male is famous for making statements that he thinks are original or outrageous, while the rest of us have heard dumb****s uttering this nonsense since the beginning of time. Observe the following:
"Why should I vote? Same ****, different *******, man."
"Black History Month? Seems to me like they're the ones being racist."
Another concern of the Entitled White Male is that White Justice be doled out to anyone not matching the Entitled White Mindset; though, obviously, the weak suburban bodies of the Entitled White Male are not fit for this task. I now present an actual (dramatized) conversation between an EWM and one of my old professors on this very subject.
"Prison isn't a deterrent anymore. What we need to do is make the punishment fit the crime. You punch someone in the face, someone punches you in the face. You rape a woman, some dude named Bubba [note the racism here] gives it right back to you."
"Are you telling me that the state should hire trained rapists to rape criminals in prison?"
"I'm just sayin'."
Until the Entitled White Male is not represented by a Presidential candidate that looks and act like he spends all day in a tree making E.L. Fudges, this group will thankfully remain oppressed.
This article deserves it's own thread.

^ there's a series (http://www.bbc.co.uk/white/) on BBC TV at the moment all about white people who feel "underrepresented" in Britain. As though it wasn't like most politicians representing them are white people. I find the idea of the series distasteful in stirring race hatred. Funny thing in England is that a lot of the time white people hate immigrant whites more than any other colour, jealous of the Polish immigrant workers making money on jobs they refused to take for being too crappy.
Making the punishment fit the crime is a strange idea really. Reminds me more of an episode of Red Dwarf...
Unfortunately no, but a person ought to be responsible enough to know they aren't parent material.
He's a 19 year old with a 2 month old daughter... do you think that he's likely to have become a father due to thinking "well, it's about time in my life I became a responsible parent. In that case, I guess I ought to go and have sex with someone"...? Another article I read on this said his age and that his wife and mother had gone out for food and left him with the girl. So I guess they thought that the right thing to do was to get married? That it might help sort him out?

Normally I would agree with you there -- but even if he wasn't planning on procreating, he is of legal age and responsible for his actions (legally). While a lot of people I know do settle down at young ages, I know it isn't unheard of to get knocked up and forced into marriage...
However, he still should have been responsible. Don't think you have what it takes to raise a child you may or may not have planned? Give the kid a chance and opt for adoption -- it's better than what he did, I'll tell ya.
It was an obvious fact even to his mother that the man was mentally unfit.

March 27th, 2008, 04:55 AM
Maybe his wife and his mother thought that he'd never do anything so terrible to his own daughter, so they didn't think leaving the child with him would be so terrible. It's just really really bad judgement on their part. There's a whole family there and they probably wouldn't want to put their baby up for adoption when they feel they can take care of her despite the flakiness of her father.
You think the baby should have been removed from the family by social services at birth?
Shiroiyuki

You think the baby should have been removed from the family by social services at birth?
No, since I hate Family Services (long story, very ugly). Besides, they would probably not have known about his history unless a family member came forth and complained.
That said, given his history of violence, lying, mental deficiency....the family should have known he would not be a suitable parent. He should have been responsible and either 1.) given the child up for adoption, or 2.) left the child in the care of another family member, making sure never to be alone with the child.
Even if he wasn't mature enough to know better, his mother should have been responsible. Isn't that neglect or something?Jesus, I'm not even making sense. Remind me not to respond to threads while tired...
Oh well, I think its a moot point now anyways. Poor kid, it's a shame nothing was done sooner.

Yes it's terrible but I would disagree that Mr. Mauldin should be gruesomely and painfully killed. Would you want to be as barbaric as the man who saw his child as being no more than a hot pocket? I think a regular death penalty would be sufficient but he would be better off at an insane asylum were he probably belongs. Now, if he survives prison, he'll leave as a crazier old man.
I'll point this out before AnimeMatt shows up and says his bit.
In 2000, a Virginia woman was sentenced to five years in prison for killing her month-old son in a microwave oven.
Would all you lynch mobbers agree that she should be tortured to death as well? This shows once again that the legal system is heavily biased against men.
Maybe they should put a "not for use on your spawn" label on all appliances.

AP Exclusive: Parents didn't expect daughter to die during prayer
Associated Press - March 26, 2008 7:15 PM ET
WESTON, Wis. (AP) - The mother of an 11-year-old rural Weston girl who died of untreated diabetes says she didn't know her daughter was terminally ill as she prayed for her to get better instead of taking her to the doctor.
Madeline Neumann died Sunday from an undiagnosed and treatable form of diabetes.
Her mother, Leilani Neumann, tells The Associated Press her daughter's condition worsened suddenly, and the parents stayed in prayer, believing she would recover.
She also says she's not concerned about a police investigation, because she and her husband believe their lives are in God's hands and they did nothing criminal, only tried to do the best they could for their daughter.
Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin says an autopsy showed the girl died from a type of diabetes that left her with too little insulin in her body. He says she had probably been ill for about 30 days.
But Leilani Neumann says her daughter was in good health until recently. The girl attended public school last fall but has been home-schooled this semester.
The chief says he expects the investigation to wrap up by Friday and the findings to be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges.
I have found another case of child abuse which convinces me there is a need for license to procreate/reproduce.

All I gotta say is that sick Son of a B**ch needs to be punished SEVERELY for this crime. Jail time is DEFINITELY NOT enough. He needs to go see Loreana Bobbit and get himself a neutering and then he needs to be bruned really bad too so he can see what his poor little daughter felt. He shouldn't have treated her so badly. Now she is going to no doubt be scarred for life. And when she is older, this could very well affect her emotionally as I am a survivor from severe child abuse and I know it affects me to this very day as I have various health issues resulting from the abuse, as well as a lot of physical and emotional pain. :( Why parents do this kind of stuff to children is confusing to me and if they didn't want any children, haven't he or she whichever didn't want the child ever hear of Condoms??
