View Full Version : What Has AN Done For You?
Justinian

Well the question is that. What has Anime Nation done for you? Me, well I'd say it really opened up a whole new realm of anime that I never knew existed. I would still be marathon-ing Bleach and Love Hina if it weren't for these forums. I'll also throw in that it gave me something else to do online other than **** around on Facebook and look at pot sites.

Good thing too. I might have run into gaia before I got here. I consider myself saved.

Hmm, overall................ nothing much. I'm just wasting my time here. :P
...well, actually that's detrimental since I could have been doing better and more productive things.
I met Soluzar here....

...hmmmm...
...
...so has anything good really come of my being here? I guess not! :P

I joined while I was still only watching what was on TV and when my interest in anime was only 10%, so AN introduced me to everything else and better things. If not for this place, I'd probably not be an anime fan and my personality wouldn't be what it is today (oddly enough).

Ask not what AN can do for you, but what you can do for AN.
Sorry, couldn't resist. :P
Seriously now, it's given me a forum to go to. I've tried others, but for some reason, I keep coming back to AN. It must be the mix of community, level-headed discussions (mostly) and people who have good taste in anime and manga.

It was the first forum to have actually put up with me*, which was a rarity for me at the time I joined. And not to mention I somehow even got Goddess of Cake to join the SOB Brigade**, which also wouldn't exist if I hadn't come across FURUBA4EVER, who got me into Bleach to begin with.
*Eventually it did. You "LOL STARMORPHERS" crowd can shut up now.
**All other members hold credit to FURUBA4EVER and/or Videl.

It's been a place where I can have (generally) intelligent discussion about anime and other similar topics with people who share my interests. I've also made some good online friends with some of the people here as well.
I don't know what it is about AN, but it's the only forum that I consistently come back to.

I've learned a lot of knowledge on nerd related stuff (and I'm still learning here and there), been introduced to series I would have otherwise never seen, entertained by a lot of the threads, learned about a lot of other subjects, and A LOT more.
Also, I don't post flaming remarks anymore, so I think it's helped out my personality.

For me, it was a jumping post for a lot of shared good/bad ideas, anime titles, other related sites, and relastionships. It also once had an excellent eva forum.
I only say that it isn't said jumping post "now" because I tend to frequent a (nice) boatload) of other sites now that inspire me differently, but even though I considered leaving, I just couldn't abandon AN in the end...<3

1. Delivered Lots of lulz on a variety of subjects
2. Got to know about certain series on here; or, also not the only fan in the world of certains series (for example, I liked the Love Hina anime and the Bount arc in Bleach)
3. Got to meet cool people on here and made me some friends. You know who you are ^_^

I hand it to AN for giving me a better social life, Nexus for taming my rage and improving my sense of humor, and work for giving me a better sense of taste and character.
In other words I give AN credit for taking me to places I've never been to that have improved my life style, from the misadventures of making ignorant comments to horrible grammar and spelling. However I think I've learned more away from AN then I have coming here and chatting around.

It's allowed me to talk to some cool people (and some stupid people) and make some online buddies that I've been talking to for quite a while now on AIM. It's allowed me to have anime/video game discussions with people, since those are two things I enjoy the most in life. Without meeting some of these certain people, I'm sure I never would have watched certain shows or perhaps even played certain games that I have now. I've been to several forums before, but this is the only one I've been to that's worth sticking around at.

It's done a lot come to think of it.
It has given me a place to procrastinate on doing work, which I am doing right now. My inner-nerd would have had no place to manifest itself outside of AN. In real life people take me as a drugy who's wasted but that's really my personality, I'm so lade back that people take me as a hopples idiot who can't do anything right. This sort of attention makes me very nervous and up tight around serious topics and that's why I blow up when people argue with me.
But I've learned to keep my head down, I try to make everything look like a joke becuase well it's not funny to me when I screw up, seriously. I think I owe Animenation an apology for being like this, I know there are so many nice people on here and people who give great information on stuff that I know little about. Between going to school and coming here, I've learned so much in 4-5 years then I ever did doing what I did back in high school. It's not just Animenation, though it has been a big part of it.
Then again as I think about it, my lazy lade back careless attitude sort of puts a certain character to Animenation sort of like the comic relief to a serious topic. Honestly the person you read about here is the person I am in real life, I have little self esteem and I feel physically weak some times, but I hate to be a quitter so I keep doing what I do, and my over confident personality sort of goes too far hence why I screw up a lot.

I wouldn't have been as much into anime if it weren't for AN. I used to create threads for recommendations and read posts people did as references into what I wanted to get. It has helped me postively for the most part. AN also has helped me perfect my English writing skills considering it wasn't my first language. When I first joined, I used to use a lot more smilies to get what I was saying across. So, after thousands of posts in almost 6 years, and I have gotten a lot better at it, naturally. Even today, you'll notice how much I try to make my posts as grammatically correct as possible when you see my "Minor edits".

AN has...
Broaden the scope of the types of Anime I watch. Mostly watched Sci-Fi, Mecha and a few Fighting titles when I joined here and now I watch a whole lot more (older series and films too).
Gave me a heads up on games coming out soon or games I should look into that are already out and I may have not heard about. The Off Topic stuff has been very interesting to me from time to time. This is the only message Board that I'm remotely active on and I get to use a nice assortment of smilies. :D The more senior members here seem to always have something Interesting & Useful or fun to "say".

Basically it's gave me something to do in late 2006/early 2007 before I got a life. Now that my life has been removed from me forcefully, I'm back.
Intertesting reads (pretty much anything Bernard finds and posts), lulz, people who I could consider friends (but I doubt they'd feel the same) and of course the anime. I am no longer a "DBZ IS THE BEST AND ONLY ANIME YOU CAN ALL GO TO HELL" type anime fan. It IS still my favourite though, and I still hate Naruto.
Also it's helped my typing/spelling/grammar quite a lot.

For me, specifically, AN has given me a great bunch of people to kill time with. It's also been a fairly good place to actually discuss anime without too much 4chan-esque trolling or posting restrictions like some other forums. Like Lemina, it's helped me with some of my written communication (unlike her, English is my first language), which has paid off academically and professionally.
The clubs were closed because they were deemed to be full of spam. I'm not passing judgement, you understand. That's what the admins said, not what I'm saying. Although I don't think there's anything written up in the rules, you couldn't make another club thread like the old ones.
Arguably, some were and some weren't. I didn't think the Lupin III Master Thieves club was too full of spam, but at the same time, we weren't really as active. The Rurouni Kenshin club arguably had more spam (they liked to call it RPG) and was a larger member base. Some clubs were pure spam. It had gotten to the point that people hanging out in the clubs were just AN regulars, rather than the intended purpose of having actual/physical anime clubs create postings to gather new members, and likewise have AN get more eyes on their site. Seeing as it strayed from that purpose, it was probably better to axe it entirely rather than it just being spam.

Yes and no; clubs were the quick and dirty way to get a directed discussion about a series which didn't have its own series specific sub-forum. Like I mentioned before, when I was in the Lupin III club, we wanted a subforum but couldn't get the traffic, so the Lupin III became the place to talk about Lupin with other Lupin fans. Some clubs that already had sub-forums dedicated to them (Rurouni Kenshin) hosted RPGs and other types of games, which were typically verboten in the normal sub-forum.
Other clubs like the Otaku Syndacate were purely social organizations and rarely on any real topic. I think there was one club that started out as an Initial D club but eventually turned into cars of all makes and models.
