well, this is very hard to gauge due to the fact that the only comparisons drawn to his strength are based on a now dead figure of myth. i read the mangas and i was in tears when Buggy didnt go into more details because i know that Buggy had served on Gold Roger's crew with Shanks, and Gold Roger supposedly tied White Beard, so Buggy calls him the strongest man alive. that being said, an opinion from Shanks would really help. until then, there can only be estimates.

Well, we also know he fought on par with Shanks during their brief "disagreement" about Ace going after Whitebeard. And since Shanks was Mihawk's equal at one time, and is still one of the Yonkou (like Whitebeard) we can assume he's still among the strongest characters in One Piece. When Shanks and Whitebeard clashed swords (metaphorically speaking) the freaking SKIES split open. It's obvious that Whitebeard's extremely powerful.

If Shanks is fearful of him and he's one of the big opponents of the pirate king himself, you gotta give Whitebeard a lot of weight in strength.

Didn't read the manga, but I'm pretty sure they've probably have had to have some encounters. He's in that tube for a reason and my guess would be because of Roger.

Let's not forget about Blackbeard which came from Whitebeard.

Yeah. Whitebeard was the only man to have fought evenly with Gol D. Roger.

Although, it's not like Shanks would ever have had a REAL chance to go with Gol D. since He was still serving as a member of Roger's crew, when the Pirate King died.

Whitebeard is "The strongest man in the world", and in the manga it states that he was the only one to ever draw in a match against Gol D. Roger, but I assume this means most of the time he lost.
