As long as we're not reinterpreting "as it was intended" again, I'll be happy. FUNi seems to have funny ideas about how things were intended to be. In any case, I suppose I'll look forward to it.

What do you mean?

I thought it was rather transparent, but... I was referring to the DBZ "uncut" boxsets. I'm a fan of actually seeing things as they were intended, not seeing what people interpret that intention to be.

Oh, that. FUNi only messes up DBZ so we don't have to worry.

I hear its gonna be cropped in widescreen & the animation "enhanced", other than that its not gonna be like the new DBZ box sets;)

it's good that the uncut version is coming out on DVD but i prefer fansubs over DVD subs. fansubs leave in words like "s.hit" or "f.uck" whereas DVD subs edit them into "damn" etc. Well thats how it is with some of the DVDs that i've seen anyway. And I'm betting they'll turn "Nami-san/Sanji-kun/Usopp-sama" etc into Mrs,Miss and Mr.?? what about cultural references? And about the dub, even though it's better than the 4kids one, they still don't swear right?

Anyway it's not that much of a big deal and i'm definitely still buying these.

...thats whats bad about fansubs. R1 subs arn't edited, they're just not vile like fansubbers. Using the "F" word in such a show is stupid. Fansubbers need to stop that crap.

About the Japanese honorifics, the subs that I'v seen from FUNi such as Dragon Ball use the Japanese honorifics. I mostly only watch FUNi releases dubbed though.

And about the dub, even though it's better than the 4kids one, they still don't swear right?

We won't know until its out but its supposed to be unedited with the original names(instead of Zolo). I bet there will be swearing but nothing to the level of Yu Yu Hakusho I'm sure.

I just hope they make a 5.1 track.

why is it stupid? if in Japanese they say "damn", but the fansubbers turn it into "f***k" or "sh**" then i agree but, if they actually do swear in Japanese i don't think it should be toned down to "damn" or "darn"

I agree with Levon that this is stupid anyways. I've seen some fansubbers do stuff like that where I can easily tell without knowing hardly any Japanese that that's not what it would translate into. ****, crap, or damn are all ok translations for Kuso in my opinion, since Kuso literally means crap in Japanese, but the f word? No... that's just stupid. About as stupid as Lunar fansubs using ebonics with Ichigo at the end of his fight with Byakuya in Bleach. We all know that Ichigo wouldn't be actually saying, "That's tight!" in the Japanese version, because the Japanese don't use slang/ebonics like that and the there isn't any word in Japanese that would literally translate into the f word anyways.

There is no F-word equivalent in Japanese. Whenever I see that in fansubs I either lol or cringe.

I hope there is at least 30 episodes on it and there is honorifics and all that for the subs. There's gotta be a lot of episodes on a set. It would be hell collecting 14 ep. sets of an almost 350 episode series.

It all depends but having such harsh swear word like the F word in a kids/family anime for example is just too out of place.

Its FUNi, they include the honorifics.

Yeah, I can think of a clear of example of this. In Hikaru no Go, when Touya Akira confronted Shindou Hikaru outside after Hikaru acted cocky and said that he would just go pro and win a few titles, get some money, and then retire. That pissed off Touya, and he said something equivalent to "DON'T JOKE AROUND!!!!", but the subber decided to translate it to "DON'T F--- AROUND!!!!" instead. Although Touya was passionate about it, that seemed a bit too harsh for Touya's character.

Hey I completely agree. But still, since it happens so much, it doesn't really make me feel sick inside. It's something to expect when FANS SUB an anime. Whatever, I guess its not that big of a deal. But still, it hardly seems like something to whine about in the big scheme of things, even when talking about fansubs in general. I've never seen it done blatantly before, so when a character says something out of character once in a while, it's not that bad.

Hey I don't have any qualms with it it's just stupid to have to read it because you know they didn't say it.

It's like when anime labs was trying to make DBZ into an adult cartoon swearing fest when they did things like Vegeta calling #20 a candy-*** f***** when all he said was, "come out and show yourself". Then you got Trunks saying that it took Freeza a lot of balls to come to earth. And the famous "****! **** you ****ing monster! you ****ing destroyed my ****ing house!!!!!1111`1!1. LAWLZ!!!! All to apse the people that said that DBZ is not for kids when they didn't read that it's target age group was 8-12 year olds like a lot of the shounen shows that are out with **** and **** in the subs, well according to the fansubbers . And the reasoning behind putting that in the subs is pretty much for the same reason as anime labs'. All to ****ing apse those people that want to ****ing impress their ****ing friends and show them that their ****ing favorite anime isn't for kids because they ****ing said **** in the ****ing subtitles.

Fansubs aren't as bad as they were the past. Translations are pretty decent but the adding of inappropriate swear words, and stuff you know doesn't exist is just stupid.

They were only doing that with their TV broadcast of it on Cartoon Network, since 4Kids still has TV broadcasting rights to it for everything before the Jaya arc or something along those lines.

I may actually buy this, I've been meaning to watch One Piece for a while now.

What's better, the anime or manga?

metal_slime1022
March 1st, 2008, 10:15 PM
Is it confirmed yet how many eps will be on the set?
The anime is a lot better. Voices (Japanese) and music is one reason. And the anime is more dramatized making it a lot better. I read the manga first and it is really good but then I watched the anime and the manga just doesn't compare. Plus you got the extra stories not in the manga like Buggy and Koby/Helmeppo side stories.

AN's put some info up.

I'm kinda disappointed. While they are starting from the very beginning, will feature an uncut dub, and will be in fullscreen for anybody wondering (Proves Levon right that Funi only screws with DB stuff) another source it says that these "seasons" are only gonna be two discs and have 315 minutes worth of episodes, which is about 14-15 episodes :uhh:. The thing is Funi's stil gonna try and sell it for way more than the DBZ season sets and around the price of their 26 episode series sets even though there's less content than both of those. :sigh:

I really have to wait but I know that since it's only 315 minitues that's there aren't going to be as many episodes that would fulfill a long *** series like One Piece.

Instead of buying this the day it comes out, now I'm gonna lie in wait and see how things pan out.

Yea, aside from the fact it's a very long series (and still going), One Piece tends to have small 'Mini-filler-arcs' instead of looong dragged out arcs that are entirely filler. (except for that last Ice thing.) So basically, my point is that you might end up buying one of these sets, only to find out the entire thing except for maybe one or two episodes is filler. But you have to get it anyway since you want to see those two episodes. Glad I download the fansub.

14-15 episodes for around $30 at other sites sounds great to me. Maybe even cheaper at places like Wal-Mart.
Sounds much like the Dragonball release.

Nigokio
March 5th, 2008, 01:39 PM
^ Yeah but the thing is Dragonball was 153 episodes so I'm fine with 2 DVD boxsets it's just that One Piece is now at 345 episodes. 2 DVD boxsets aren't gonna cut it for something that's longer than DBZ. It kinda just looks like they want to milk the series since they could've easily put this on 26-30 episode boxsets considering the length of the series.

What I want to know is, what does Funimation call 'Season 1'? Is it, for example, episode 1 - 17 (Episode 1 to the end of the Kuro arc)? I've never heard of One Piece being referred to in seasons, just arcs.

Levon
March 5th, 2008, 01:51 PM
I think around 15 episodes per volume sounds pretty good, now if it was 3 episodes per volume like their old DBZ releases then that would be insane. Now that would be milking the show to death.

Yes it will take a while to collect but thats expected no matter what.

Nigokio

What I want to know is, what does Funimation call 'Season 1'?

Everything they've released in a boxset after the DBZ sets has had "Season" in the title. It's just a lack of creativity that's all. I guess they think it's better to call something "Season __" even if it isn't than thinking up something.

Thing with DBZ is they'd already made a crapload on sales after years of dvds and merch. Those were essentially the years later discounted versions. Moreover, they're cheaper than all the other anime out there. Most shows are 3-4 eps $30 retail upon release, so this is already half as expensive. But yes, most people are just going to continue to steal the show and never buy anyway so whatever.
