I'm just curious for both those who cosplay and those who have seen many people cosplay.

When you are cosplaying, do you try to act like the character you are playing? Or do you just dress up and act as you normally would?

Which would you say most people who cosplay do?

I've never been to a con to know unfortunately, though I'm going to try and go to A-kon this year and maybe cosplay (hence the question).

I'm more the type to dress up and leave it at that. It might just be because I'm too shy to act like the character. For a photo I'd try to act as the character for a cool shot but that's about it.

Though a lot of people do act like their character when the time is appropriate. But there are also some who act so much to the point where it's just plain annoying.

Yeah see that would be my inclination as well, because I too am shy. A pose for a picture wouldn't be a problem though, like you said.

Yeah I can definitely see that, people going out of there way to try and draw attention to their character.

Thanks for the reply, I'm really curious to know which is the norm...

...just dress up, have fun, and try not to ruin your costume in the process. as for being in character, i do the same as hiei - just for photo ops, and not during the duration of the con.

When you cosplay, it's wise for the cosplay to be appropriate for the weather.

The only time I might try to act like my character is when I encounter someone cosplaying another character from the same series; depending on who the other character is, it can be fun to act as my character would, especially if the other cosplayer reciprocates. Otherwise, I just act like myself, though I do try to pose like my character would for a photo op.

If you're a little shy about acting like your character for the entire duration of the con, then don't. Just go with what you're comfortable with. People shouldn't look down on you for not acting like your character all the time. Really, in my experience, at least, the only cosplayers I've seen who try to act like their characters all the time are those participating in a LARP (Live Action Role Play).
