View Full Version : Favorite Thanksgiving Food?

So since Thanksgiving is approaching I was wondering what everybodies favorite dish is that they have during their feast.
I love sweet potatoes with brown sugar and left-over Turkey sandwiches

Banana bread. It's gotta be on the table, or it's not Thanksgiving for me. Anything else is optional.

...such an everyday staple - or maybe it's because i can make banana bread, like, everyday.

i'm still curiously suspicious of those green bean casseroles that i see that everyone's bringing...

Without well prepared turkey, Thanksgiving it is not.

As for my favorite Thanksgiving foods...eh, probably the same as Christmas foods (that is, both of these are staples, on my table at least): cranberry sauce and sweet gherkins (pickles).

In Maine, back when I was growing up, it was very difficult to get fresh produce once winter hit. There were a lot of canned goods or the hardier root-type vegetables (potato, onion, squash, carrot), but very few of the less durable fruits. You might get some apples, but fresh berries were unheard of and tropical fruits were pretty scarce. When you combine that with typical bland New England cuisine (overcooked and unseasoned), you can see why banana bread was one of those things we didn't have very often, and why it was a treat.

Now, of course, you can get bananas pretty much year round anywhere in the country. But back then, things were different.

...i'm still curiously suspicious of those green bean casseroles that i see that everyone's bringing...
I've always hated those casseroles, and I can't fathom why they became popular.

...geez LD. you make it sound like Almanzo has to give you grain for the Long Winter (ref. to that damn Laura Ingalls book)

anyway, i didn't know that it was so hard to obtain said items during the winter. still, you could have made, you know, Lobster bread - something indigenous to the area...

I like turkey, tho I hate how drowsy it makes me feel.

My mom always makes Graham Cracker Vanilla Pies for me because my birthday is usually on or a couple days around Thanksgiving, and it's my favorite type of pie. ^__^

Nah, Dad always managed to bag a deer to get us through the winter. Which was a shame, 'cause I've never liked venison at all. Mémé was a hell of a poacher, too. Nobody went hungry, but Maine cuisine is very simple fare. Any seasoning beyond Salt and Pepper is considered haute cuisine.

anyway, i didn't know that it was so hard to obtain said items during the winter.
Well, it isn't NOW. But back in the day... yeah. I find it amusing to see the size of the produce sections in local supermarkets. If a supermarket doesn't devote a whole section of the store to being some sort of vast, water-sprinkled, air-conditioned cornucopia, people think it's hardly even a grocery store. But I remember growing up, you only saw that much fresh produce at a local farm stall or a farmer's market, and only in season. And even then, you could only get what was growing.

Nowadays, I can go to any grocery store and get five kinds of fresh tomatoes, at any time of the year. That's great for me, because I love to cook, but... part of me still finds that kinda weird.

...what the- graham cracker vanilla pie? please, do tell. what's in it?
It's a vanilla pie (probably with a vanilla pudding filling) with a graham-cracker based crust. We usually had the chocolate equivalent for Christmas. For Thanksgiving, it's always a pumpkin pie, but with a standard flaky crust, rather than a graham cracker crust.

I made both last year (along with my banana bread) and they came out great.

For some reason I can't picture you reading American Literature... unless forced. I've read most of them... It was some of the later ones I never read, like the one you mentioned and one or two around there.

And don't forget, a nickel could get you a carnival game. ^-^

My fave is a tie between the Mac and Cheese, Stuffing and my family's famous Sweet Potato Pie. This year I have to really have to learn to make the dinner so I can exactly do it for myself (the cooking is going to skip a generation, don't ask). I can only make Mac and Cheese properly (and pretty damn good too).

Definitely sweet potatos. It's the only time of year when my mom will make them, and thankfully she makes them in great quantities. I love them with lots of brown sugar on them....they're amazing. Perhaps one of my most favorite foods ever.

I can't say there is any one thing I like about Thanksgiving that I don't eat the rest of the year but what's most appealing to me is the quantity and selection. I mean, I get to load a plate with turkey, ham, sweet potatos and tons of veggies, smother it all in gravy - then go back for more?

This year will be interesting as my mom, my girlfriend's mom, aunt, and one of her mom's friend will be doing most of the cooking so it'll be interesting to see Midwestern American and Spanish-influence Thanksgiving.

Duck! Honestly turkey's too white for me. I like the dark meat. Roast Duck FTW. Unfortunately to find it in a grocery store is extremely rare, and there's a lot less meat on it too. I'm also a big fan of stuffing, and half cut roasted potatoes.

but this holiday is nothing like Easter and the polish holidays, SO MUCH FOOD!!! at least for my family.

Traditional Cornbread Stuffing! I have very simple tastes, and we only eat it twice a year. 'Course, it has to be served with that delicious cranberry blob and potato salad. Oh yea, keep your F'ing "real" cranberries to yourself, darn it! I'll never eat that crap again in my Life!

As far as Turkey goes, I only eat it on sandwiches smothered in deadly, deadly Mayonnaise. My dad can dry the HECK out of a Bird. Hours of boiling followed by hours of roasting (oftentimes, the bird is stuffed, which only further dries it). Well, on the Plus Side, at least we know it's cooked to a safe temperature... probably 'round 221 Degrees! God Bless his Turkey-Butchering soul!

Tell them Thanksgiving is a mandatory holiday, whether the turkey died in honor of this celebration of the first meal pilgrims had or not, does not exclude you from stuffing your face and gaining a few pounds from the only turkey eating contest America has to offer.

I don't like fried turkeys because you don't get the yummy pan drippings from it. You do however get 50 gallons of grease you have to dump, which is fun especially if you hate your neighbor. I once took my time and spelled ***** in my neighbors yard. The grass did not grow back for months.

Just the traditional American heartattack meal. I usually do things this way:
1: Start the base of mashed taters
2: Pile on sweet corn
3: Top with glazed ham:wub:
Then I proceed to mix it all together and usually a little cranberry sauce joins the fun.

Of course, then there's...THE PIE. Oh, the glorious pie. This is one of the few days of the year where I don't monitor my eating habits. With good reason, heh.
