Whilst watching One Piece the other day i was thinking this to myself after seeing Luffy do something incredibly stupid (as he does) which one of these two is the smarter?
These two are quite similar in character in many ways and that doesnt change when it comes too there IQ Lol but what i can say about the both of them is when it comes to fighting thats when there brains really kick into gear and they show that there not as silly as it seems, you need power to win a fight but without brains your gonna be in trouble and i think Luffy proved against Croc face his intelligence isnt as low as you may think.
And Goku on many occasions also has outsmarted his opponent whilst fighting but he seems to be more forgiving than Luffy which could be seen as a weakness but its more to do with his heart than his intelligence in that case.
Its a tough one and i cant really decide myself what do you think?

I'd have to say Goku. He can pilot a spaceship and drive a car, while Luffy has no idea how to get a ship going nor would he know where to go.

ffl brings up a good point even though the driving example is filler. But I get the feeling that if Luffy were traveling alone in space he'd find a way to blow up the spaceship before it even got there. Goku to me has a lot more common sense when it comes to being social for one thing. He also knows restraint, where Luffy would just run into a bad situation and then figure out what to do. So I see Luffy in the same light as kid Goku and he'll probably never change. Luffy is great even though at times he's a mirror image, but he's got plenty of his own personality traits/fighting abilities.
Questions # 2. Who has a larger appetite?
Question # 3. Who gets more pissed when their friends are in harm?
The answers are going to be very similar.

Lol thats why i made the thread i agree that Luffy would of probably crashed the ship on the way to Namek but would Goku of caught on too Crocs weakness while hanging with a hook in his gut?

This is assuming that Crocodile could even get close to Goku or pierce his skin and that Goku wouldn't just blow him away on a molecular level, right?

Not every version of Goku could beat Croco so that would be you assuming im talking about latter Goku, earlier Goku would have trouble with Croco for sure.

I was under the impression that Professor Briefs made the spaceship so idiot-proof that Goku didn't really have to do a lot. I think that Luffy has a fair amount of cunning in certain situations, and while I do agree that adult Goku is smarter, I'd say it's a close thing.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. Just seems like he set the destination for Goku if I'm not mistaken and all Goku did was get in the ship and the ship just took him right where he wanted pratically, though I remember Goku having to Kamehameha his way out of a bad situation and get back on the right course (though that was filler I'm pretty sure).

Yeah. Goku didn't have to do much, if I recall correctly. He worked the gravity machine... and that's about it.
Oh yeah... he managed to put on his space suit so he could use the Kamehaha wave to avoid the ship flying into the star. Can Luffy put on a space suit?

Well he put on a monkey suit... Though that was filler too (one of those TV specials).

I think Goku's smarter. He's able to come up with his own plans when the others aren't around (correct me if I'm wrong), but Luffy seems to just wing it, even if Nami or someone else comes up with a plan.

If we're talking about DBZ Goku, he'd have no problem with any One Piece baddie...
Now, DB Goku, especially early on...that's a different story...
Of course, in a lot of cases, the ability to fly would be a huge advantage...
;)
As for who's smarter...well, I haven't seen all of One Piece, so this is just a guess...
But Goku has shown that he can be a master strategist (not on a Piccolo level, but who is?)...and has outsmarted baddies who supposedly had mega-I.Q.'s...
...aaaaand Luffy just kinda "wings it", as someone said...
Yeah, Goku wins.

Hmm imma massive Goku fan dont get me wrong but i think Luffy is being completely underestimated his battle brain is quite amazing so is Goku's i cant deny that, i think its pretty close between the two i mean sure Goku in a social way has the advantage over Luffy but Goku has done some silly stuff in Z i know hes a kind hearted person and giving Freeza that last bit of energy to escape is in his nature but you wouldnt see Luffy making such a error or at least not from what ive seen of him so far.

Being a One Piece fan, I'm prone to think that Luffy is smarter. ^^; Yet, everyone's reason sound valid enough. Luffy does sometimes can manage to fool his opponent too, such as in Arlong Saga when he tricked Arlong to think that he's going to use sword against him. ^^

In my opinion, Goku is probably slightly smarter

Well, on the one hand, as people have already stated; Goku is socially better than Luffy, and is able to drive, and such.
On the other hand, Luffy has come up with plans it would have taken far longer for Goku to come up with. Luffy's battle with Crocodile was one example, but another example is Gear Second and Third. If Luffy was a complete idiot, I doubt he'd have figured out how to make Gear Second work. Plus, the amount of creative ways he can use his Devil Fruit are a plus. (Gomu Gomu no Yo Yo, Net, Gear Second, and Storm are examples of this.)
I'd say they're overall equal. Both are better in different areas, but the average intelligence is low.

Goku. The only reason he seems stupid is because he likes to have fun. Luffy is just a dumbass.

I say Goku's smarter but I still can't forgive him for turning down being friggin' God because he thought it was boring in the Upper World

It would be. He saw much more action being directly involved in Earth's affairs than overseeing it in some celestial palace. The status of "God" isn't exactly a measure of power in the Dragonball world.

I know but he could have been God himself. Maybe it was because being a Kami in the DB universe was more ominous in Dragon Ball moreso than in Z. I don't know but it was a dumb move. Also leaving Earth to Gohan was stupid too.:P

True. Would you want to stay up on the Lookout with only Mr. Popo to keep you company? I wouldn't. XP
As for smarter, for me it goes to Luffy, just barely. To my knowledge, he's never had to resort to a pat-pat to determine genders. ^_^

gokou figured out how to teleport himself and others in an instant as long as he's been to that place before no matter what the distance may be. i think that alone gives gokou the advantage of the brains department.

He figured out with the help of the aliens who taught him the technique, whom were living on the planet he landed on after he got in the space pod that belonged to the Ginyu Tokusentai anyways... Did Luffy need help from anyone to learn how to use Gear Second and Gear Third? Nope, he didn't. *Walks away with his arms raised in the air* Then again... we could just bring up the fact that Oda just doesn't seem to want to explain anything, like how Luffy was able to think up Gear Third on his own.

Probably not the place to ask this, but I gotta know, as I only recently got into OP - what is a Gear anyway? I've seen some pics, and it looks like Luffy using Kaio-Ken. Is that pretty much what it is?

I'll copy and paste what I can from Wikipedia since I'm too lazy to type it out, avoiding any spoilers.
By creating excessive pressure within his legs to kick-start an accelerated blood flow, Luffy provides his body with more oxygen and nutrients, gaining a sudden burst in speed and strength, both mentally and physically;
While in Gear Second, Luffy's metabolic rate is so high that his sweat vaporizes nearly immediately, giving him the appearance of emitting steam, and his skin turns slightly pink from the increased blood flow. Since all of Luffy's organs and blood vessels are rubber, they can expand and allow the blood to move at the increased speed without the danger of rupturing his blood vessels and organs.
Gear Second is Luffy's preferred gear form as demonstrated by the potent advantage it gives him in combat, enabling him to fight opponents that are initially out of his league. However, Luffy can only use Gear Second for a short period of time since the accelerated speed at which nutrients are used up depletes his energy stores rapidly, leaving him thoroughly exhausted. The mechanics behind this enhancement also mean reduced strength and ability after significant use; with nutrient stores running low, having a faster blood flow would be quite pointless, since there are no nutrients to deliver. Luffy can immediately recover by ingesting food to replenish himself.
Although Luffy's rubber form allows him to successfully perform Gear Second without killing him outright, its usability exerts a tremendous strain on the body, gradually shortening his lifespan. hough Luffy's initial inexperience with Gear Second led to a serious drawback; the use of its capabilities causing enormous bodily strain. With enough usage and acquired training, Luffy assures that his body will eventually grow accustomed to the form overtime and its drawback will assumingly be overcome.
To use Gear Third, Luffy corks his mouth with his thumb, bites into his thumb joint and blows very hard into it, inflating his arm. He is then able to transfer the air through his bones throughout the entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. Luffy blows so much air into his body that when it is all focused on a single limb, it becomes the size equivalent to that of a giant's.
Used with his already-strong physiology, this apparently gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with, but he sacrifices speed for this enhanced strength. The bones are the key difference between this form and his old "Gomu Gomu no Fuusen" move, where his balloon form was soft and squishy like a regular balloon, whereas the inflated bones are hard enough to withstand bullets, which was demonstrated when Luffy's inflated body was shot by several marine bullets, which harmlessly bounced off his body. The bones being much harder also mean a lot of compression of air takes place when using Gear Third, making Gear Third not just a "for-show" move, as Lucci initially thought, but like equipping Luffy with a giant mace of astounding mass when used in attacks. When he attacks in this form, he often uses the word Gigant before the attack, describing the giant nature of the attack. In between his attacks, Luffy brings the air back to his chest and then shifts it into another body part. To leave the Gear Third form, Luffy exhales heavily, propelling himself backwards.
The usage and deactivation of Gear Third brings about shrinking, which is a negative side-effect. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in Gear Third mode. This shrunken form has shown no ability to stretch at all, and it has been shown that Luffy loses strength. Apart from that, Luffy functions normally. To deal with this weakness, Luffy utilizes a "run and hide" strategy to avoid his opponent.

they're both idiots. simple. their appetites? equal i'd call it. and yes, lets be clear, DB stage goku, by an number of OP Grand Line baddies, would get utterly noobed. as for DBZ Goku, One Piece does not deal in the concept of astronomical repetition in reaching new levels of power. nor could any OP characters threaten a universe or such. so i'd say DBZ comparisons simply arent fair. that being said, who'd like to see Taopaipai captain a crew on the Grand Line?
