When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.
At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.
That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.
American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.
By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.
According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.
The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.
One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.
The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.
The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.
And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it.
According to the Nato source, the encounter has forced a serious re-think of American and Nato naval strategy as commanders reconsider the level of threat from potentially hostile Chinese submarines.
It also led to tense diplomatic exchanges, with shaken American diplomats demanding to know why the submarine was "shadowing" the U.S. fleet while Beijing pleaded ignorance and dismissed the affair as coincidence.
Analysts believe Beijing was sending a message to America and the West demonstrating its rapidly-growing military capability to threaten foreign powers which try to interfere in its "backyard".
The People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet includes at least two nuclear-missile launching vessels.
Its 13 Song Class submarines are extremely quiet and difficult to detect when running on electric motors.
Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, and a former Royal Navy anti-submarine specialist, said the U.S. had paid relatively little attention to this form of warfare since the end of the Cold War.
He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call for the Americans.
"It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do, which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan."
In January China carried a successful missile test, shooting down a satellite in orbit for the first time.
Discuss.

Guess what, this changes nothing. The US military is pretty much one of, if not the best in the world. We'll have it figured out in less than a year, and countermeasures developed as well.
I really like how they mention the nuclear warheads. So what, buddy? We have them too. Nearly every country that is a "threat" has them.

this is more proof that WW3 is gonna officially start (this war is more like the US vs parts of a religion). the Chinese are making top notch submarines just like the Germans.
not to mention they have an army which is....f*cking huge. we have ABOUT 1 million. theres no invading THAT country.
i need to find a neutral country to go to once every ounce of crap hits the fan.

The Neutral countries are the ones that always get taken first. They just kind of roll over and let any invading force walk all over them.
The US has air superiority, which includes defenses against everything from infantry, to tanks.
although submarines have always been a problem for the US. Japan and Germany gave us a real run for our money.

And what is Switzerland going to do? Neutral countries are not safe havens in wars. Sometimes they are the best targets as they offer little to no resistance.
I am in a bad part of a country for WWIII. My state has A LOT of nukes, and silos. So it is a main target.
Other than China, my bet is on Iran and other middle east countries. I also fear that Russia may against us this time, since they seem to be friends with our enemies.
I am not afraid of China or any other country, except Russia.

The level of sheer political stupidity in this thread is absolutely astounding.
This is a single submarine. It will not spark World War III. Neutral countries, like animematt said, usually get rolled over and absorbed without a fight. China is not a crazy country, they are remarkably shrewd and know that fighting with the US would not end up being profitable for either nation; instead, they would be more likely to create economic situations where we are greatly inconvenienced, than they are to actually fire weaponry at us.
Russia could potentially pose a threat, but it's more than likely that even with a return to the domineering ways of before, they will not ever become so large and insatiably powerful as they were under people like Josef Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev. Putin is a pretty strong leader right now, though. The biggest threats to worry about are Iran, among other nations. A nation like Iran is much more likely to attack another country than is China.

The last thing they should ever have done was alerted us to a hole in our security. Now the military will find ways to close that hole. They should simply have kept it to themselves and exploited it when necessary.

We're also assuming that it's a country that's going to start the next war...
Give the last major attack on continental US soil wasn't from the military of a country, i wouldn't be worried about a small sub...

You seem to overlook one simple fact: people are dumb. Somebody could see a potential threat and decide to end it easily with the push of a button. Near the end of the first Gulf War for example, Bush Senior decided against invading Iraq, foreseeing a very similar situation to what we are in now.

Exactly like in Iraq. The insurgents can barely punch through our troops armor with their 50 year old rifles, and cheap ammunition.
I wouldn't be too worried about number of people. I mean Germany lasted against Russia for quite a while, and Russia suffer many times more losses than them on the Eastern Front. Granted Germany still lost though.
The most determined people will probably win, The Soviets had basially civilians out there that they handed cheap (but excellent rifles) to, with a bit of training.
The US has excellently trained troops, a superb Air Force and Navy (granted with what has happened). I am not too worried about some peasants with rifle they found in the dirt.

That and the Kittyhawk is the oldest active ship in the Navy, commisioned in 1960. It is even older than Desslock. ;)
This is just about right too, considering the Peoples Liberation Army is loaded with surplus Soviet equipment from the 1970's they have a full decade on the Kittyhawk.
