View Full Version : How did you find AnimeNation?
Athena

Just as the thread title says, how did you find yourself to get here and register in these forums?!? AN has been around for a very long time though the ups and downs of anime, and people still continue to come to this day.
As for me, I didn't really have internet access until around the summer of 2002 when the floods of July 2002 occured here in South Texas. At the time, we couldn't get any new shipments of work at my old job because of the weather. We ended up spending much of our time talking or going on the internet until the end of our work shift. At the time, I was a subscriber to Animerica and I would find magazine ads of AnimeNation from time to time everytime I read it at home. When I had the opportunity to go online at work, I tried out the AnimeNation store, and thats when I found the AN message boards and decided to register. Ever since then, I had decided to get my own internet connection at home within a few weeks, and that's when I started posting online more. I've been here for more than 5 years now, and wow has this place changed a lot over the years.
What was your experience getting here like?!?

My "main" anime forum animeboards was starting to decline in traffic and I also didn't like the layout for AnimeOnDVDs forums were at the time (2001-2). So I made a thread on Animeboards asking if there was any other good anime forums around and animenation was mentioned.

I used to buy stuff from AN back when I first got into anime properly... so, early 2000s? Didn't join these forums until I wanted to pick on something in an "Ask John" column one time, though...

I merely stumbled upon this site via Anipike back in 2002, but I didn't discover the forums until about a year later, when that Sakuracon 2003 fiasco began to unfold. Before AN, I was prominent in Megchan's Digimon forums until it shut down, and I haven't participated in message boards for a long time after that.

Back in 2004 I was looking for Gundam SEED DESTINY related information, and one of my searches led me to these forums. I looked around for a bit, and randomly bookmarked the place, but didn't come back till December, when I decided to Register since there was a good GSD discussion thread here. Even still, it was a couple months till I really started posting outside of the Gundam section, and not till last year that I gave the Off-Topic section any mind.

I've shopped here for several years and was bored one day so I browsed the forum. It seemed like a level headed bunch of anime fans so I decided to stick around. There have been a few annoying people, but the ratio is much lower on AN than most anime forums.

I had just got through watching Evangelion for the second time, and I was googling to find out what was going on. I basically understood a lot, but the completly misleading blurb on the back of the DVDs was making me doubt myself.
I googled... and found some answers in the Evangelion forum here. Hung out there for a while... got bored of that, found the rest of the forum. I've enjoyed this place a lot.

I originally came here for the Evangelion forum, since I'd just finished the series at the time (I think...maybe I watched it earlier? W/e) and was looking to discuss.
Then out of the blue I apparently was banned, so I got a friend to question it and it turned out I had been accidentally banned, or so Sharp said. So I came back, browsed for a while, and then fell off the boards for nearly a year or so before coming back, red text in hand (dunno if my black text posts are still around, might be). I've been here ever since.
I guess I came initially because Armored Core Garage and Gundam.com, then my main hangouts, didn't really have much in the way of anime discuss. Gundam.com was more Gundam than anything else (and like...four years after they went down, they're still saying they're gonna revamp, what?); ACG was more or less geared towards the AC games.
So yeah.

Way back when, me and a guy that used to (and I guess still occasionally does) post here named "venom112" went to high school together. One day we were talking about anime and I told him he should join anime-forums.com, where I was a member. But he told me he'd been a member of AN for almost two years, so I joined, and voila. Sorry, studying some Poe in my American Lit class. Sharp has posted here and there occasionally, but he seems to just kinda be busy with life and stuff, and internet isn't as important. Whenever an SRW thing pops up, though, he always posts at least twice. Always.

My brother randomly showed me the online store back in July '03, then I discovered AN's now-long gone fansite listing section (where I once submitted my YYH fansite). After a couple days browsing that I noticed there was a link to the forums. It looked like an interesting discussion place so I joined.

Google probably. I don't even remember...back when I was a fan of anime, I did numerous searches on a daily basis for stores, sites, etc. of my favorite series.
Back when AN had a better Series Specific section, one of my google searches no doubt landed me there for Kenshin or Bebop...hey what daya know....
I stayed within the upper realms of the forum for a while, SS, Anime, DVD. Then I feigned interest and moved onto music. I had always loved music, but it got real intense after I stopped spending time/money on anime/manga.
That's when I entered the world of Music(Anime and Games), and off topic.
Now, there is an off topic music, TV, and books section. I hardly ever visit the upper portion of the forum.
And that, is an autobiography of KB's life on AN, condensed and packaged, conveniently with a gift for you.

I was brought to the forum while in High School due to a specific post a friend of mine, who used to be a member here, found. It wasn't until later that I started reading up on the Rurouni Kenshin forum here that I actually created an account and began posting.
We were talking after an anime club meeting at school one day and I was talking about bringing some Kodomo no Omocha in for viewing when he said there was this hillarious post I had to read about it. He navigated to it and I browsed the thread a little bit and they were talking about Kodocha and I stumbled upon the post he was laughing at:
I heard some people talking about Kodocha and I was all like nani what are these bakas talking about?!
That bolded part right there has lived on in my arsenal of insults for nearly 8 years. That's how retarded and hillarious I found the quote to be.
Initially, I wrote off the forum based on this one post as a collection of informed, but illiterate, fans and I just wasn't sure about posting. Finally, I found a stupid poster in the RK sub-forum, created an account, and wrote a Desslock-sized post tearing into their discussion. And that's how Suiko was born (on AN.)
Obviously, I've been here since the crash and I've enjoyed it for the most part. My initial reactions to the forum were proven wrong and I don't think I can find a better, more entertaining group of people to meet or converse with via Internet forum (save for the possibility of getting my own).
Thanks for showing me "what all these bakas are talking about", because I was "all like nani".

I am a recent member to the boards but I have been visiting Animenation for at least four years or so. When I had time, I was an avid reader of the reviews of Animeondvd. They have AN listed as one of their sponsors and I decided to check it out. I have been reading ASK JOHN for a while now and have been a part of other forums prior to this. I think ASK JOHN is one of the more interesting aspect of AN and is probably a reason why I have been a read for so long.
As for the forums, I just wanted to see what it was like and what type of mind set permeates through the threads.
I have yet to buy anything from AN...I find that I have been purchasing less anime within the past year and a half.
You said that this place has changed a lot over the years. I bet it was better than it is now. It makes me wonder how the threads progressed earlier. Nowadays, it just seems like a contest to one up everyone else...(for the most partfrom what I have seen to date). Although there are some exceptions. Just some initial thoughts from a relatively new member.

I found AN when i was 14. i was looking for places to buy anime online, as the selection in my town was somewhat limited. I eventually registered with their old e-mail services and used those for a good while(from 2000, till they closed the free acounts in mid 2002?) I had begun to explore the less comercial aspects of AN.net, which then had more than the forums(links, fan art section, etc.) and eventually registed in 2002. i changed names in 2003 and here i am now.
