View Full Version : So... is One Piece set to start its 'era' in the United States?

I remember back when all that conjecture was made about One Piece having an era back in the Naruto Era thread. Of course, Naruto was mostly denied that possibility, but many One Piece fansub watchers believed that One Piece had an era in the coming, if I recall correctly.

So... now that 4kids' influence is mostly gone from the anime, and Funi has taken over, is One Piece set to sail into a golden age on the Toonami block? I believe Naruto is still much more popular as far as the general American audience goes (you know, Toonami watchers); however, One just jumped licenses, and the current arc hasn't exactly taken off yet (most of the last episode was talk, if anyone watched. My friends sat there and complained about the voices changes, and I hardly caught any of what was being said... -_-).

Well, what do you think folks? Is One Piece about to set sail or not? From my perspective, it is hard to tell, since it seems like the past few arcs (which were all under 4kids) seem to have been a big turn off for some fans (not sure how many, but just an observation, and personally, they were very boring to me. I think I was REALLY starting to get tired of 4kids music, and the characters voices).

Oh yes, I mustn't forget to tell you. I am a dub watcher - yes. This is all coming from a dub watchers perspective.

Clearly its gonna do better than the 4Kids crappy version. I mean not only will the people who were watching the 4Kids version continue watching FUNi's version but anime fans who can't stand 4Kids will watch it(like me). Then there are the uncut DVDs which will appeal to everyone.

The arcs before the Jaya arc are really amazing, its just you watched the 4Kids version so of course you diddn't like them.

Well to me the One Piece era started years ago. It's been one of the most popular fansubs for some time now, but we're only a small percentage. Everyone just has to disregard anything they ever saw from the 4Kids version and start a new.

Agreed Hisoka. I could only hope that One Piece reaches Naruto level in popularity (even though I doubt it). I do think it will get more popular than it was for sure though.

Actual I was referring to the dub watchers, not the fansub watchers... though I guess it works both ways. I think One Piece is going to become a lot more popular since FUNI picked up the license and made their changes... but just exactly how popular will it get? Will One Piece's ratings began to rival Naruto's? Since the fillers are about to hit on Toonami after the current arc (Sasuke Retrieval... then the year of filler), I'm thinking it is quite possible. As a One Piece dub watcher, I can't help but think of such things.

I think once people get over the initial reaction to the art as we here all did it will become extremely popular.Once I described ace and his dealing with a fleet outside of Arabasta a friend became very interested in the show enven after giving up it earlier; to be fair he only saw a few episodes of the 4kids flub....err dub.

It's ashame One Piece is forever tainted with Zolo. I would buy the manga, but I don't want my manga with 4kids references everywhere.

It will do well I feel. FUNi is doing a great job in my opinion. It'll be hard to stomp out the success of Naruto like it did in Japan but I have hope.

Man, the new dub really is amazing. I'm currently watch it on Toonami... and it just seems all of a sudden SO cool. Man... when Funi releases the DVDs I'll definately buy them. One Piece rocks so much. ^_^

Not to mention the original music is there. The 4kids score ruined the atmosphere of the show. Even the comedy moments felt serious.

Yeah I know what you mean. The 4kids moments didn't give relief where it was meant in the original in serious moments, and when they did have comedy (in comedy moments) it so so utterly stupid that any viewer over 10 years old would not want to watch it. I'm serious, this is some epic transformation stuff we're see here. One Piece has finally gone SSJ

I actually have the feeling that I'm entranced in a pirate crew's long and adventurous, mystical quest. There were some high emotions running through me during last nights episode, and that's something I never really had when 4kids had One Piece (except when Luffy owned Crocodile, but hey, that cool regardless of the music, though the original probably owned a lot more).

Also, I'm starting to fall into a deep love with the English versions of the OP/ED.

Yeah at first I wasn't too hot about the English OP but it really grew on me & I get the song stuck in my head. The ED song I loved from the first time hearing it though.

Yes.:) The English version of Free Will = massive fangasm. My second favorite ending next to Run Run Run. FUNi has always done a good job dubbing over intros, looking back at their Dragon Ball intro dub over. I'm excited to see how they do for Rainbow Star but thats like 180 episodes away.^_^

This dub is really the best I've heard since GITS.

I wouldn't go that far:lol: But I do enjoy it a lot & it improves with every episode.
I can't wait for movie 8.

One Piece's got dubbed OPs/EDs too:O . Even though I've got issues with dubbed OPs/EDs it's still good that Funimation's trying really hard with this series.

Nami - "You think?"

Luffy - "Yeah"

That face is classic.

Making Luffy sound like a little kid is the best possible thing they could have ever done dub wise. Its like he is a whole different character.

Hugs monitor. The voices are so perfect. Thanks for the clip.

It doesn't feel like One Piece at all to me, but it's an improvement none the less. It's watchable, a normal dub and as long as dub watchers are happy that's all that matters I guess. Less criticism is always nice.

Luffy is all wrong, and Zoro's voice is WAY too deep. Chopper just sounds flat out annoying. But, it's a thousand times better than the 4 kids dub. Nami was the only one I didn't completely hate. Watchable nonetheless I suppose, but not after you've seen the Sub.

^ Eh, it just takes some getting used to when your so used to the Japanese.

It feels very much like One Piece to me(thats why I like it), which I can't say the same about 4Kids version at all...

The voice actors are a big improvement, that's for sure. The music gets the atmosphere back in the original's ballpark, though. 4kids music sounded like it was all synth and it had that gay "American's impression of pirate music" feel in the background, you know what I mean? It was pretty damn cheesy. I'm still getting used to Zolo's voice, and Chopper's voice is taking a while to set in as well, but yeah. We've all said it at least once, and I'll say it again: One Piece is now watchable.

Mostly, for me at least, I can do from dub->sub easily but if I've watched something subbed first, then there'd be little to no way for me to enjoy the series dubbed as much as I do subbed. Funi's One Piece is fine though. I still like watching it subbed primarily but if I got lazy I could very much watch this show dubbed. My only real problem with the dub is that almost all of the same VA's in the horrible DB dubs are there. And Sonny Strait's Usopp reminds me too much of dub Kuririn which, I don't like dub Kuririn's voice.

The only VA's from DB/DBZ are Chris Sabat, Sonny Strait & Eric Vale. Main cast isn't filled with veterans at all. Plus they have improved a lot.

Luci Christian, Brina Palencia, Stephanie Young & Colleen Clinkenbeard havn't been in DB/DBZ. Well Colleen Clinkenbeard voices some minor roles in recent DBZ releases but those don't really count:P

I hate the DB/DBZ dub but the new One Piece dub is clearly different. For one the script is actually pretty accurate when I compared them to the fansubs. The DB/DBZ dub is like a 4Kids dub, you can't say the same about the new One Piece dub.

Luci Christian as Nami is my favorite. I'v been a huge fan of her for years & was realy excited when I heard she'd voice Nami.

The role I'm worrid most about is Zoro. Chris Sabat is very mixed, sometimes he sounds just right & then other times he sounds too deep. I really hope he adjusts it and uses his less deep voice, its only a few episodes in so he could improve.

With each episode I think the dub is improving & I'm getting more used to voices.

^ Well I never said the new One Piece dub was bad, because it's much much better. I just get annoyed when certain members of the voice cast pop up because they remind me of those dubs. I can stand this dub though.

For me all the new dub' s voices are good. MAybe not the best, but definately good, or okay. I' m sure it' ll get even better with time as the VA get used to their roles.

Yeah. This pissed me off as well. I was also looking forward to the episode. Now I have nothing to do until Death Note comes on...

Usually, I love Saturday. It's the only day I watch TV, really. It only takes one bad Naruto movie to throw it all off though.

I' m very hopeful OP will have its era now !! Though it has already drove many people away with the 4kids version...
But anyone who really gets into this anime will be addicted. (like I was)

I have to say, I'm loving the Skypia arc right now. Very interesting, and a nice balance between action and observant talk. The politics of the land seem a little interesting too. Can't wait to see what happens next.
