So how would the best way be to go about it? I 'd like to avoid the 4kids versions at all costs. I noticed someone mentioned that One Peice isn't in 4kid's hands anymore. Can someone enlighten me on the situation of the One Peice license? Many thanks.

Well, Funimation has it now, as of episode 144. So unfortunately, the only way to view the first 143 without 4kidsification is to watch the fansubs. I heard Funi was going to redub the first 143 episodes of One Piece and release on DVD later, but Viz still has distribution rights if I remember correctly... so yeah.

FUNimation have taken over the One Piece license, but they are starting with the Jaya arc which is somewhere near the middle of the overall One Piece series. Their dub for the TV is pretty decent, and relatively unedited, but I would imagine that is of no use to you. There will be uncut DVDs released sometime in 2008, with subtitles.

Right now there's no way to get a subtitled version of the first 143 episodes, unless you resort to fansubs. Normally I wouldn't recommend that for a licensed series, but when the licensee is 4Kids it is perhaps a little different. I have heard that FUNimation will eventually be releasing uncut DVDs of the early part of the series, but that Viz Media currently have the distribution rights for the episodes dubbed by 4Kids.

I think that forum rules would prohibit anyone from giving links to the fansubs, so that's pretty much all I can tell you. It's not a great situation for someone who wants to watch an uncut or subtitled version, but there is scope for improvement.

I can't give you any links to where to get the episodes, but I can give you the names of some of the better groups subbing the series.

Kaizoku Fansubs probably has the best subs out there, but they have only subbed up to episode 230. (They are still going, they just arn't that far) but I would reccomend watching them up untill 230.

Next would probably be Vegapunk, they have the entire series subbed so far, and are subbing the new-releases of One Piece when they air as well. There are a few other groups, can't think of the names right now.

Char is deaf so his only way of watching is fansubs or waiting for FUNi's releases.

I'll have to agree even though this wouldn't normally be the case. Honestly you'll want to dig up the fansubs and you shouldn't feel dirty about it in the least. Nobody in their right mind wants to start around episode 140 so avoiding that at all cost is the priority. Who knows when FUNi will get around to the first half. So it's really a matter of how soon you'd like to watch it. All the other details have already been covered.

I'm glad that an admin wants to watch One Piece. It has 300+ episodes out right now so you're going to have plentiful to watch. You could watch fansubs which have the more updated episodes or the dubs (which are horrible). However I think new dubs are coming out soon so you could wait if you want.

If you plan to watch fansubs then I agree with Haru! that you should watch Kaizoku Fansubs because they got quality alright. They are the best fansub group I've seen. Have fun watching One Piece!

PS. The fillers are fun to watch!

As I said Char is deaf so watching the dubs wouldn't make sense to him-_-;

The new FUNi dub isn't horrible at all, its the 4Kids dub thats horrible. 5 episodes(144-148) of the FUNi version have aired on CN so far. Unlike the 4Kids version the dub is watchable with voices that match the characters(no accents thank god), very accurate script, edits are minor, BGM isn't replaced, OP/ED are included(well dubbed, but accurate) and they won't cut episodes(4Kids cut around 40 eps).

The only option is fansubs. It's gonna be like 2 years+ before you can watch Funi's translation. Plus starting from episode 144 is kinda pointless without prior knowledge. You will miss all the awesome stuff before that.

It's going to be forever. Then FUNi will pump out 'One Piece: The Lost Episodes' and the numbering will be all out of whack, uninformed people will be confused and you'll have to answer these same questions over and over. I know they had no choice and it's going to be released better than you know what, but it's still a crappy. So that's why everyone should just watch the fansubs for those eps regardless of it being licensed.

Don't get me started with that piss poor Dragon Ball GT marketing garbage.

It will be really long, hopefully not as long as the first 13 episodes of DB.

Yeah I feel the same way. One Piece seemingly will never fully be released or it's going to take a really long time. Like me getting a PH.D and getting married, a long time. I mean, it's still ongoing in Japan, 1 episode gets released per week dubbed, and they're on 148 as of last Saturday and the first 144 episodes are in the same limbo as Dragonball Movie 1 and the first 13 episodes uncut. So yeah I agree, fansubbed is the only option now if you want your fix.

Its not really the same limbo. Viz/4Kids license will expire in 2009 so I'm sure thats when FUNi will start from the beginning.
Those Dragonball episodes are unknown(I think).
There is an R4 release though so we can just import them, so its not a big deal.

^Well the only way to get DB movie 1 is through the dragonbox since kidsmark said they'd hold on to the license for as long as they can. I wouldn't be surprised if 4kids' tried something like that with One Piece.

I dunno, rumor had it that Toei stripped the license from them.
