Hell, I didn't even know it was on. I was busy watching Metalocalypse.

Hi, Lucifer? It happened. What's that? Yeah, I'll bring you some hot cakes soon... I know, chocolate, not vanilla...
Okay, Lucy-boy, stop crying. You have connections. You could make the New York Yankees overthrow the US government if you were so inclined... what? No, I'm not actually suggesting that. No, really, I... are you watching Star Trek again? ... Lucifer, I can hear Scotty's accent from your side... Okay, just be grateful you now have a fighting chance in the Vancouver Winter Olympics. I'll put you down for Germany again if I have to, just stop complaining about how cold it is down there.... What now? No, I... agh, let me check...
Hey, does anyone want anything from KFC? Lucy-boy seems to be on his eating habits again... no?
No, Lucy, we're all fine here.... Look, Boston has never been that friendly with you to begin with. You should've seen this coming... no, I can't bail you out on this. Now please leave me be so I can get some sleep... no, I don't need a bedtime story... okay, fine... I'll meet you back at Walmart tomorrow. Bye.

Can you really? I don't believe that's possible. It's possible to be a neutral, but that means not being a fan of any team, which is mostly how I watch sports. It means that I don't care who wins, I just like to see a good game.

True, the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry, which is considered one of the most intense rivialries in modern MLB, is like playful kittens compared to some soccer team rivalries.
It sucks, I hate it. And I will NOT hear the end of it from Red Sox fans. And I'm still pissed that the Indians crapped it up because after they beaten the Yankees, I wasn't mad at them because they were a superior team and was rooting for them (because you're a true Yankees fan when you root for your team AND the team against the Red Sox).
I'm shocked that the Rockies didn't put up much of a fight after the strong postseason showing thy had this year. Alot of people were predicting that this would be a 6-7 series in favor of the BoSoxs but getting swept was a surprise.
Oh well, I'm not expecting the Yankees to win it all next season since the bullpen will go under alot of changes with some people leaving (A-Rod) and a new coach and era. But nonetheless, as a Yanks fan for 10 years now, I'll be rooting for them to take it all.

Colorado Rockies. And the Rockies lost 1 game in the postseason before getting swept by the BoSox. Embarrassing, indeed (well, not as embarrassing as the Indians blowing a 3-1 lead before the BoSox won the next three games.)

On the contrary, I think the Red Sox are pretty consistent with playoff appearances. Since 2003, they've made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years. As for World Series titles, they've won 2 championships out of the last 4. I would say that's pretty darn good especially compared to the Yankees who seem to get bounced out of the playoffs in the first round almost every year. Face it, the Red Sox are in the midst of a good run and will be contenders for years to come.
How did you feel about ARod dumping the Yankees?

The Yankees made 12 STRAIGHT playoff appearances. We only started to lose in the first round for last three years. And managed to win 4 World Series out of 5 years at one point. That is NOT a bad record since a few teams can do that. Now we have new blood in the pitching rotation, don't count out the Yankees just yet. All we need to keep Posada and Rivera and let go Clemens because Clemens can't do it anymore.
As for A-Rod leaving, it's sad he's demanding more money for poor postseason records as a Yankee. Because as excellent as a player he is during the regular season, your performance in the postseason is gonna count in the end. I would be surprised if any team would pick him up after that fiasco he pulled. I think it's a great player but his priorities are mixed up.

With the highest payroll in pro sports, the Yankees better make 12 straight playoff appearances or else they would be more of an embarassment then they already are. So it's true that few teams can do that because few teams have the Yankees gigantic payroll. 4 out of 5 is ancient history. While we're at it, maybe we should celebrate the successes and accomplishments of the Roman Empire.
ARod is demanding more money because he was quite simply the best player on your team and carried the Yankees to the playoffs last year. It's interesting to see that if the Yankees and ARod had come to an agreement a few days ago, ARod would be heralded by Yankee fans as one of the greatest Yankee players ever to put on the uniform. However, since he opted out, hypocritical Yankee fans have turned on him calling him a playoff choker, clubhouse cancer, a phony and more. I don't blame him for leaving after the way Yankee fans treated him.
Of course teams will pick him up. After all, he is one of the greatest players of this generation though I wouldn't want him on the Sox. His offensive production is amazing and many teams need a player like him to help them even get to the playoffs.
You should know that many Yankee fans on their forums have accepted that next year may be a rebuilding year. They've just lost their manager and best player (how do you make up for 150 rbi?) and who knows if they will be able to resign Posada or Rivera or Pettite. Mussina and Clemens are getting old. Their bullpen isn't that great either.

Payroll obviously mean nothing. One thing that I give Torre full credit for is to conduct a team under these circumstances. Plus it wasn't that long ago. Heck if the BoSox never win another WS in the next seven years, you prolly would say the same thing as I do.

He is a great player during the REGULAR season, what's good about a player that can't play well during the postseason. Did he carry the Yankees to the playoffs? He helped certainly but it was really a team effort all around since he was kinda bad during the regular season until around mid-summer or so. And OBVIOUSLY you never read a NYC newspaper or been around alot of Yankees fans, ARod is usually not well regarded 'round these parts. Actually, when he or the Yankees are not doing well, he usually get most of the criticism because he's the most paid player on the team. Hell, alot of Yanks fans been wondering why in the world they pay them so much when he's a bad postseason player. It's been like that since he came here. So when he and his agent tried to demand more money before his opt-out decision, most Yanks fan pretty much want him gone.
Of course teams will pick him up. After all, he is one of the greatest players of this generation though I wouldn't want him on the Sox. His offensive production is amazing and many teams need a player like him to help them even get to the playoffs.
What's good for a $300 mil player that can't play the postseason? If you're going to spend abot $300 million (which is his asking price nowadays) on a player, you want him to be able to play well during the season AND postseason. If he wasn't such a bad postseason player, the Yankees wouldn't had let him go. While I don't agree with the Yanks' top brass (especially that ugly affair with Torre and pretty much dissing Mattingly), this was a correct move.
You should know that many Yankee fans on their forums have accepted that next year may be a rebuilding year. Bullpen isn't prefect but it got them into the postseason. Yankees had gone 9 times into the postseason without A-Rod (hell, there was one year he didn't contribute much) plus this year was an off-year anyway, prolly because they focus too much on trying to keep Torre at his post.
And a new year doesn't mean you can count out the Yanks yet. I would be rough but I have faith that they will return to the postseason. If Steinbrenner's sons are smart, they should try to get Posada, who played a pretty great season this year, and Rivera, who can mentor the young pitchers, especially Joba, who has the makings of being a monster pitcher. I agree that the bullpen needs to be deeper and that's they're most likely going to focus on especially that Clemens is done for in baseball and Rivera might not come back. The bullpen, despite its problem did well this season, the most of the problems really is the offense not hitting anything to help out.

Our bullpen wasn't the problem this year. It was the starting pitching and the bust that was Igawa. Clemens fell apart towards the end of the year and, while it may have looked bad on paper, Pettite still had a good season this year.
Phillip Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Joba Chamberlain are the beginning of that rebuilding. The team can do without the egos(A-Rod) and still be successful. Just look at the '96, '98, '99, and 2000 teams. Where were your Red Sox then? And mind you, our team didn't have superstars. They actually clicked and played excellent ball.
True, we may not have Joe Torre behind the managerial reigns, but we have Joe Girardi and he can work well with the young kids. Extremely well. Remember the 2006 Marlins? How they were 2 games shy of a Wild Card spot?
Btw, the Yankees may be going after Johan Santana during the offseason. Andruw Jones is also a HUGE fish in that free agent ocean.

I agree payroll doesn't equal WS wins, but it does give you an advantage over other small market teams and it has certainly helped the Yankees make the playoffs for 12 straight years. So yes, I think payroll makes a difference and the Red Sox have followed the model of the Yankees in overspending just to remain competitive in the AL East.
He is a great player during the REGULAR season, what's good about a player that can't play well during the postseason. Did he carry the Yankees to the playoffs? Your fellow Yankee fans will tell you the media and papers in NY are really hard on players and they never take them seriously. The papers are all over ARod because their job is the sell papers and stalking ARod or trashing ARod is the perfect way to sell their stuff. Honestly, ARod did not deserve all the negative attention he got and I feel the papers were too hard on him at times. He was your BEST player and yes, he didn't do so well in the playoffs but neither did almighty Derek Jeter in the playoffs this year. Also, your ace Wang stunk it up so how do you expect to win? ARod does not deserve all the blame. Also there are many teams who would want ARod as they don't even make the postseason and they need a player like him to help them get there.

It would be nice but any reasonable Yankees fan can see that he was not the sole reason they lost in the playoffs this year. Wang gets most of the blame but so does Jeter, ARod, Posada and Matsui. Does Wang get a free pass for his horrible performance and ARod doesn't?

As a Sox fan, I never count out the Yankees but I was only repeating what your fellow Yankee fans are saying that next year could be a rebuilding year and they might not make the playoffs. Posada and Rivera are not signed yet though they might be. Torre and ARod are gone already and some of your starting pitchers are getting old. You have some young promising players like Joba, Cano and Cabrerra so that is good.
DAM8024
November 4th, 2007, 06:21 PM
I agree your starting pitching is a problem. Of course the Yankees need a true ace so Santana may be a good choice but remember if the Yankees want Santana, the Red Sox may try to get him as well even though they have good pitching already. You never can have enough good pitching.
You have young players like you said but are you ready to accept that you may not make the playoffs next year? Rebuilding means it may take a year or two to become dominant again.
The dynasty Yankees were great and the Sox were pretty average then. Now it's different and the Red Sox have won 2 in 4 years. I do think personally that the AL is more competitive now then it was in the 90s when the Yankees dominated. There are more teams that try to build championship teams.
Girardi did well for the Marlins but he got fired for conflicts with Marlins management. If he can't get along with the Marlins management, I wonder how he will deal with the Steinbrenners and the harsh NY media. Girardi hasn't proven anything yet so we'll see.

Obviously you don't read the papers or went on the Yankees forums when they were against the Indians. Jeter and Wang got their fair share of the blame, but truth to be told, they were pretty off this postseason and not their usual selves. Yeah, Wang stunk, and there are fans who wanted him traded for that piss-poor performance but the guy did very well before that point. And a lot of people crticize Jeter's usually poor postseason play. But the difference between these two and ARod is that they're paid considerably less and only had one bad postseason this year. ARod, on the other hand, is the most paid baseball player in the Major Leagues and basically choked in every Yankee postseason outing except this year when he was finally hitting. The Yanks fans forgave him the first time around, thinking that he's not used to transitition yet. As postseason after postseason of ARod not contributing much to the plate, the fans got frustrated because he was best player in the regular season but a lame duck most of the time in the postseason where it really counts. Remember, it's the Yankee standard to make it to the playoffs, ARod contributions in the regular season doesn't matter after that point (or either anyone else).
I'm not sure what you mean by "focus too much on trying to keep Torre at his post."
Basically, too distracted to play the game properly. One thing I facepalm towards Steinbrenner for is that stupid ulimatium he made. I mean, hello, that will affect your team's morale if you just threaten that their favorite coach is a pretty much a goner if they lose.
Only starting pitchers that are getting old is Rivera and Mussina, who played pretty damn good against the Indians. Plus the bullpen is now relatively young.
Plus I like Giraldi is focusing on winning a 27th pennant for the Yanks. He might actually get some flexibility that Torre never got to enjoy in his later years. And now with ARod gone, we can invest in some good players and focusing on building a new pitching roster. It would be rough but I believe that they can make it at least to the playoffs.
And I won't count out the NL just yet, after the Yanks' last pennant, 3 World Series went to the NL (Marlins, Cardinals and Diamondbacks) with the Cardinals getting it just last year. They just weren't as strong this year.

Girardi did well for the Marlins but he got fired for conflicts with Marlins management. If he can't get along with the Marlins management, I wonder how he will deal with the Steinbrenners and the harsh NY media. Girardi hasn't proven anything yet so we'll see.
Yeah, that's not actually true. Girardi was fired because their current manager needed a job and was cool with Marlins head staff.
