I remember hearing that the earliest chance is in 2009 when the Sci-Fi Channel's license over the name runs out.

I'm going to have to disagree with some_random_guy's comment about Tales from Earthsea being "amazing."
This movie, as you should know, was not directed by the famed Hayao Miyazaki, but his son Goro and that itself makes the greatness of this film take a drastic turn. After watching it, however, I can see why his father was not too supportive about him making this movie.
Visually, I was definitely not impressed. The character designs were undistinguished, facial expressions almost non-expressive and not varied, and as for backgrounds and colours in general, everything seemed quite bland. It's almost like the people working on this movie (and there are a few key credits that work on many other Studio Ghibli releases) didn't seem all that inspired for this film. Visually, this is not at all like any of the other Miyazaki movies which held great detail and diversity.
Also.. although this movie is in the fantasy genre, the magic used is not very dazzling and the cities we are introduced to seem like nothing from the out of the familiar. This being said, it seems quite un-Miyazaki-like (and un-Studio Ghibli-like) to have made a movie with what turned out to be a miniscule sense of importance and solemnity, and yet not have a single comic-relief character to lighten that so called mood.
All in all, I would suggest watching it for the mere sense of watching every Miyazaki movie, but to not have your hopes up because you will be greatly disappointed.

Oh.. and if you can't find it anywhere else, it's available in parts on youtube.com and on veoh.com

I found a lot of similarities to Kaze no Tane no Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, and Mononoke Hime in Earthsea, i enjoyed it for the most part but as of now i'm much more excited for Ponyo on a Cliff than a theatrical or video release of earthsea.

Or you could take the cheaper route and import the R2 from the UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000UYBOTM/) if you're desperate. It's only (the equivalent of) about $20 at the moment (before shipping), probably because it's not a hit at all. It's not popular, for a Studio Ghibli title. It's not a very good film. You can read my thoughts on the film here (http://tenshi-a.blogspot.com/search?q=earthsea).

You mean that you're happy that Miyazaki keeps "coming out of retirement"?

Hasn't he technically retired twice? I remember him announcing his retirement after Mononoke-hime but I want to say that he had claimed to retire once more before that or after Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. Personally, I don't think Miyazaki will ever successfully retire in his lifetime; he's well acclaimed at what he does and his work ethic is very much like his great predacessor, Tezuka Osamu. Most people in the anime industry, to me, don't exhibit those qualities which makes his work that much more sought-after. Like Tezuka, I think death will be the deciding factor in Miyazaki's retirement.

As far as Gedo Senki goes - I've still not watched it and don't really care to. Not necessarily because of the lack-luster reviews I've received about M. Goro's work but more because it takes me so much effort to actually want to watch a M. Hayao film by my own volition. The only ones that excited me immediately were Nausicaa (because of its history) and Cagliostro (because it's Lupin).

I heard it sucked from all the reviews I've read.

Wasn't Miyazaki-senior estranged from Miyazaki-junior over this?

they were when Goro-san started to direct, but Hayao-sama was pleased with the result so they are speaking to each other again.

i was actually pretty excited about the movie, but after seeing it i have to admit that it didn't blow me out of the water like most other ghibli films...it wasn't horrible though. you can really see a difference in things like the facial expressions as mentioned before and the story didn't seem to flow as well either. i kind of got bored somewhere in the middle, but i do know it was adapted from a book (which i've never read) so i'm not sure how true it is to the original story.

another thing that bothered me was the villain: lord cob. woow...what an utterly boring character.

i did really enjoy therru's song though...what a lovely melody. <3

It was the Most successful Movie in Japan of 2006 and the most reviled. It was voted worst movie of the year and Goro worst director of the year.
