well my worst case scenario has finally happened. many of you probably know about the major fires raging in southern California. we just relocated from my house in Spring Valley to my brother's elsewhere in SD and we could see the fire spreading halfway down Mt. Miguel, which is about a little over 5 miles away i estimate (don't know exact distance) about an hour ago when we left.

sadly i had to leave my vast anime and game collection behind, along with everything else and the chinchillas :(. it was hard ordeal the last time some years ago though the fire wasn't close but it looks like the end is near. man this sucks . don't think i'll resume my anime hobby if it ends up that way.

Can't you claim insurance for your collection?

Glad you're safe, hope everyone you know is safe too.

I don't know... I guess I must not like people much; the idea of an extensive anime and game collection going up in smoke... I feel that pain far more than I have any other report on this disaster...

I hope that... whatever the minimum possible disasterous outcome of this could be for you... that's how it turns out.

I'm so sorry, that's a terrible thing to happen to anyone. I hope that everyone you know is alright. I hope your collection is intact when you get back home. There's always a chance, right?

Don't give up on a hobby that makes you happy because of something like this. You may have lost your collection, but you can still watch some anime. It's a terrible shame to lose everything, but don't make it worse by depriving yourself of that which makes you happy.

Although the collection is important (and I think I can sympathize) it is good that you were able to get away safely.

We will all hope for the best.

Can't you claim insurance for your collection?

Insurance companies tend not to cover things that can actually happen to you.
Like Hurricanes in Flordia, fires in California, etc etc.
I kow here, most companies canceled all flood policys, at least for a while.

Insurance companies tend not to cover things that are likely to happen to you.

Fixed, because, well, that would defeat the profitability of insurance (as the cost to cover something likely to happen to you would be too high for people to afford).

Yeah I saw the news report as I was heading to class this morning, but didn't know exactly what was going on (since I couldn't hear the tv). All I saw was a whole lot of orange and smoke on the screen.

This happens every year though. Doesn;t it?

My anime is on my computer, along with much of what I consider important (namely my writings and graphic productions.) If the poo hits the fan I can just pack up the comp and go. :)

Sucks to hear about the fires though, mang. I hope your riskily-placed house, and by association your collections, come through is their previous chemical states.

Not to sound like a b*tch, but you can always replace your collection.

However, you can't replace , family nor chinchillas.

Stay safe!

thats horrible. id freak if all of my videogames and anime were gone. and a couple other possesions that i will never let go of. my SNES videogames are like gold to me.

and i like chinchillas. thats also horrible.....

id do what MaliceDR does. but here's my advice to all of you out there: if you have a big collection, upload all of the info from your dvds onto your computer into files that can be instantly burn onto a blank dvd. now only if i figure out how to do it on my comp.

Chinchillas are so cute.
ALthough I prefer bunnies. TOo bad my apartment managers are idiots, and let my neighbors have cats, and small dogs, but I cant have a damn rabbit.

I dont know what I would do if I lost all my stuff....ALthough I do have renters insurance which could pay off SOME of it.
Which reminds me, i gotta inventory my things

Animematt, if i was in your town and your house caught fire, id steal the fastest car closest to me and stomp on the gas pedal so that i am far away from the enourmous explosion. im pretty sure your friends, family and neighbors would all think the same.

I've been really lucky so far. The fires were pretty bad in RB but they seem to have changed directions. The Police have blocked off all entrances to my neighborhood. If I leave I can't go back, so I'm just going to stay put.

... still, even with all these fires, it still won't make a difference since a lot of people don't really give a flying F.

to them, it's just another story, another day.

It may happen "every year" but by far, this has been the worst. I've never seen so many dented signs and the lamp posts on the 405. My sister's friend walked outside on Sunday and saw a tree fall over and smash a Suburban. When you're driving down the intersection, your car is is swayed and forth by the wind, and the only thing you can hear is the wind howling in your backyard... not to mention, breaking noises. And... I don't even want to start about the bad air quality, level of damage, and the number of people whose lives have been greatly affected.

It's true a lot of things can be replaced but if you've paid more than $750k for your house, it's not easy. But as long as you still have your health, memories, and family members, you're good... but it's hard.... very hard.

I feel really badly for those affected, and hope all are well...

BUT

The place catches fire every year - when will people realize that maybe building uber-expensive houses in that particular area isn't the brightest of ideas?

When people on the gulf and east coast realize that hurricanes strike the coast at least every 3 years, and stop building houses on the beach.

This marks another reason why New England is the safest place, relative to natural disasters. The last tornado we had that we experienced was before I was born. The most property damage I've ever had to fix was shovel my driveway. and the hurricanes up here have yet to even take off a few shingles on the roof, and the earthquakes are mild.

Yeah, but I'd still rather live in Japan; which is like... one of the most dangerous places in the world, as far as natural disasters go: Got Earthquake? Yep. Got Typhoon? Yep. Got Tsunami? Yep. Got fire? Yep.

PERFECT.

See man. That is one reason I would never live in Kalifornia. You pay like 3-4x for a house, than what you should.
I was watching some TLC house fix show.... A house in Kalifornia was selling for nearly 500,000, when here, it would sell for probably 200,00 at most!

Now, SoCal...that place is NUTS.

Most people can't afford to build (and live in) hurricane proof houses. I live pretty close to the beach, but yeah... if we get a cat. 3 or higher, there's a good chance my house won't be here anymore.

California is a disaster area (well, there's a lot of potential). Ever been to LA? They build houses on the edges of cliffs that are hundreds of feet high (so if there's a good sized earthquake... well, let's just hope no one is home). Southern California also has insane insurance policies on houses (I wonder what it'll be like after this year's firestorm? Probably the equivalent of home insurance for us peeps on the coastline after Katrina hit New Orleans). With the Santa Ana winds, each year has risks for a major fire. All you need is an arsonists with access to the Weather Channel (so he can seek out the best time to throw his match on to that dry shrub out off I-95, while the wind is blowing towards downtown San Diego), and you got yourself a national story.

i'm back! in case anyone missed me (doubt it). thanks to the quick work of the water dropping helicopters and the lack of wind the danger was over with in no time. but my brother had been working on the comp so i've been off the net until early this week. but now i've returned thanks to COD4!
