Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 (trilogy) - Yoshiyuki Tomino
The Catcher In The Rye - J.D. Salinger
That's it for now, I guess. They're all pretty smashing. The Scarlet Letter was a potential one for this list, but I decided not to put it on.

The Histories, Herodotus or The Iliad, Homer
You can draw so much from both, the first is more fun than a lot of fiction that I've read. My favorite stories, however, are probably the two Iphigenia plays by Euripides. It's really fun to see Achilles act like a dumb jock.

My favourite book of all time is "Beautiful Losers" by Leonard Cohen.
I haven't been able to satisfactorily read novels ever since. I only read things with pictures on every page, web forums and emails, news articles and computing textbooks... occasionally I read the words on a used public transport ticket and consider it as some kind of holy text.

^ Catch-22 is an utterly brilliant novel. It's laugh-out-loud funny in places, and then, everything changes. The stuff that was funny before starts to sit in your gut like a ball of lead. It takes incredible writing skill to change the audience's perceptions that quickly, completely, and subtly.
The sequel to Catch-22 was... eh. I own it, but it's not one I'd recommend as highly.

Song of Ice and Fire-by George RR Martin
Described as the American Tolkien in a time magazine article, whilst his book was considered the only book in the fantasy genre that genuinely gives Lord a Rings a run for it's money as 'greatest ever'. Strangely he is not that well known (reasonably known, but not well known).
